Lightbulb Dj Blue: Bottles Contest #2 (February)

Blue Bottles, part 1

After compiling a list of over 350 blue bottles, I've grudgingly narrowed the first installment down to 102.

Challenge:

In a private message, name as many of the fragrances in the picture below as possible. For each bottle, score one point for naming the house and one point for naming the fragrance.

Click on the picture below to view it full size (1024 x 768).

Note #1: If your browser resizes the picture to fit your window, the bottles will not be as easy to see.
Note #2: If a house appears multiple times, name it each time. Give as much detail as you can.
Note #3: The only help I'm offering for now is this thread: http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=189840.

Process:
PM your list of answers, in the order that they appear in the picture.
It would help to receive your list of answers all in one private message, but you may submit updates/corrections up until the deadline.

Deadline:
12:00 midnight (CST), Friday, February 8 => 6a.m. GMT, Feb. 9

Who Can Play:
Any Basenotes member who signed up before February 1, 2008 (even those of you who have suggested bottles).

Judging:
If more than one person has the same number of correct answers, I'll choose a random winner from those finalists.

Prize:

For 1st place: a $75 (USD) gift certificate to one of the following
• BeautyHabit.com (gift certificate via email)
• ThePerfumedCourt.com (gift certificate via email)
• Sephora.com (physical gift card mailed within US)
• Aedes.com (physical gift card mailed within US)
• ThePerfumeShoppe.com (physical gift card mailed within Canada?)
• Another e-tailer of your choice that offers gift certificates via email
• I'm open to other options for Basenoters outside the U.S. (e.g., Aus Liebe zum Duft)

Blue prize for 2nd place: a bottle of Boucheron Japur Saphir, generously offered by DeeOlive, one of the Red Bottle Contest co-winners.

Blue prize for 3rd place: a brand-new, blue scarf from Twolf, somewhat similar in style to this:

Disclaimer: This is supposed to be fun. Please be gentle with me!
_________________________________________

With over 350 bottles, I couldn't use all of them at once. Stay tuned for Aqua/Teal bottles and Pale/Baby Blue bottles.

Many thanks to Twolf, DeeOlive, Quarry, Agent Provocateur, sofresh, and everyone else for their contributions!

Oh Tang it's GORGEOUS

New screen saver for me! This is going to be fun watching - I'm not playing - but will play just for my own amusement - I see some mystery bottles that I would love to own - just because they are blue (and beautiful)

Good luck to all the contestants and Twolf what a lovely scarf!

Tang did a fantastic job! Again!

The scarf pictured is Hermes Chasse en Inde (1990) retailing from $900. The Third Prize winner, however, will receive the brand new scarf (100% polyester, Made in Japan, approximate retail value of $35), somewhat similar to the shown one.

Thank you for all the kind words, everyone! (Offers smelling salts to shadesofbleu. ) I enjoy doing this (beauty + order), and it's on my laptop's desktop, too. I can't wait to have a rotation of different colors in my screensaver folder.

Good luck to all who attempt this madness!

Hi Tang - give us an update

How are folks doing on this one? I could only get about half so far - even though not entering the contest.

The Red contest lasted from January 1 - January 5 (which seems kinda short now), and received 8 entries. I think people may have had more free time at the beginning of January than now.

Deadline extension...

Instead of 8 hours from the time of this post, let's make it 32 hours from the time of this post:
Sunday, February 10, 12:02a.m. CST, (6:02a.m. GMT).

This may not help much, but here is a slightly larger version: 1280x960

Those of you who have sent entries already can continue to add updates any time up until the deadline.

I feel a little sheepish about even mentioning fragrantica. I wrote to Grant about them (whoever they are) many weeks ago in order to say that I pledge my allegiance to Basenotes, but that he better step up the quality of service here. Since we can't add items to our wardrobes right now, or use the directory, or leave reviews, and some days we still can't access BN, this just doesn't bode well. New online searchers who come across POL, BN and Fragrantica might well go with the site that appears to offer the most glitz.

Announcing the Winners!

--> Final Blue Bottle Wallpaper, with 157 bottles (55 that weren't in the contest picture). <--

Considering the vintage/obscure bottles I tried to trip you up with, you all did a fabulous job! In the end, every house was identified, and every bottle had at least one close or correct guess from the combined effort of 8 participants. The fact that I didn't completely stump you makes me a little... blue.

There will be future picture contests, so if you're not completely fed up with bottle hunting, there's always next time! I think the first place winners will let everyone else have a crack at it, as our Red Bottle co-winners (DeeOlive & Quarry) so graciously did without me even thinking to ask.

The results:
(Total points possible, 201)

• 1st place: tdem1961, with 180 points, including the sole identification of Guerlain's Guet-Apens.
• 2nd place: alba, with 176 points, including sole identification of M. Micallef White Sea, Amerigo Vespucci Marina Militare, and Isabel Derroisné Le Temps des Reines
• 3rd place: AgentProvocateur, with 167.5 points, including sole identification of Patou for the ship bottle (bottleship?).

The three of you will be contacted regarding your prizes. :bounce: Congratulations to the winners!

Honorable mentions:
• eek909 had the closest guess for the Avon Blue Angel bottle
• jillsy had the sole guess for the Polish perfume, Miraculum Pani Walewska (3rd row, 11th bottle)
• eek909, jillsy, and tdem1961 correctly identified Versace Blonde.
• MFfan310, nsamadi, and AgentProvocateur correctly identified special edition bottles such as Le Mâle Summer 2006 and Nuits de Noho Swarovski edition.
• MFfan310 and alba had the most complete identification for special edition bottles Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey Summer (2004) and Sisley Eau du Soir Edition 2004.
• nsamadi, tdem1961, and MFfan310 correctly identified the Collector's Edition of Dior's Midnight Poison
• anamari, MFfan310, and alba correctly identified the elusive Prince Matchabelli Luna Mystique bottle in the bottom row.
• anamari, jillsy, and tdem also identified Avon Blue Rush (6th row, 2nd bottle)

All in all, very impressive!

I was pretty liberal with points and did not split hairs on formulation details or abbreviated answers (e.g., Nina Ricci Belle de Minuit for Nina Ricci Les Belles de Ricci Belle de Minuit). Adding half points & quarter points for complete answers (e.g., Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle + Summer + 2006) did not make a difference in the overall standings.

Many thanks to my bottle consultants for helping me with my own questions -- you know who you are. And a special appreciation to DeeOlive & Twolf for providing blue prizes for 2nd and 3rd.

If I've missed or forgotten anything, please let me know.

Congratulations to all the winners! This sure was a lot of fun. I'm glad I tried it but sure was stomped with that battleship and the bottle with a hobnail design. Sure learned a lot.

Great job, Tang!

Congratulations TDEM. I am truly impressed!
Accolades to ALBA and AGENT as well.

TANG - you really outdo yourself, and maybe someday I'll have learned enough to actually enter one of these great contests!

Thank you, spicegirl! I had a TON of help with bottle suggestions this time (400+ ), especially for the vintage/obscure fragrances. Most of them are ones I've never seen until I start googling and surfing sites such as LuckyScent, Sephora, Fragrancenet and others. I lost all the files on my computer 2 weeks ago and was able to track down all the blue bottle pics again in the course of an afternoon (with the help of the spreadsheet I had printed out by then, thank goodness!).

I have a folder of pink & purple bottles waiting in the wings, LIB. If I collect enough of each, I'll make 2 separate wallpapers -- and I'll definitely ask for favorites you'd like to see included!

Congratulations to all!

I knew only about a dozen at first glance, but I did know those Patou battleship bottles (only because Patou is one of my favorite houses).

Tang,
I love these pictures as desktop pictures, as well you know.

What I would like to know, is where you find these fantastic bottle pictures and how you make the collage?

I am so impressed, I have the red bottles on my work pc and the blue bottles at home.

Thank goodness I missed this contest!!!! I'd have driven myself mad. As it is, only 15 little minutes spent feverishly smacking my forehead, to discover I'm totally lame-- I only knew 28. LOL!

Now, I really have to check in with basenotes every day. I CANNOT miss the pink bottle contest. Heh, heh, I can start studying now!
Please, spritz responsibly.

I find most of the pictures by browsing perfume sites or by searching for them on http://images.google.com. On the Google results page, I try to find a result that has a white background and does not have to be edited, except for shrinking it to size. Several of the older bottles had to be extensively edited, since they showed up with busy backgrounds.

I use GIMP, which is similar to Photoshop, and I drag all the little pictures onto one large canvas, moving them around on a grid until they look... "right" and the overall effect looks balanced.

And I do this late at night when I can't sleep.

The Normandie pic was one of the bttls. I stared at for ages before I realized it was even a ship! I'm hopeless!!

Which is why I leave the contests to the "experts"! I am not worthy.......

Yeah I feel a little stupid for not realising the ship in the middle was a perfume bottle... oops.
