Default What should the next purchase be?

My collection currently looks like so:

    Unforgivable
    Armani Code
    Clinique Happy
    Quorum
    Caesars Man
    CK Euphoria
    Romance Silver
    Versace The Dreamer
    A*Men
    Polo Blue

    I'm contemplating between these:

    M7
    Yatagan
    L'Anarchiste
    *Baldessarini
    Baldessarini Ambre
    Un Jardin sur le Nil
    *Platinum Egoiste
    Montana Red
    *Fuel For Life
    Gris Clair
    *Valentino V
    Terre d'Hermes

I'm familiar with about half those scents (the asterisk-ed), and I have no real objection to buying blind. If you wanted to post your top 3 out of those, or heck, even rate them from most favorite to least (or you have something else to suggest), awesome. I'm sort of looking to fill in the gaps in my current collection, but I could also see finding something to layer. Any input appreciated.

    Terre D'Hermes
M7 (try it first, but it's one that stands out a lot in that list)
    Diesel Fuel For Life

The Diesel, I just threw in there because I'm not familiar with the rest on that list or some of them are too much like the stuff you already own.

Actually I wore Fuel For Life today, I do like it but I told my ex today "I smell like a raspberry, or maybe a homo." That one note dominates on my skin, and then dries down to a very feminine scent. I may wear it again tomorrow and see what happens.

I'd suggest L'Anarchiste, as you've got nothing like it. Applied with diffuse sprays, it becomes a beautiful - even elegant, woody floral scent. I've said much more about it elsewhere, search for "L'Anarchiste Initial Impression" for my mini-review.

It seems you like quite sweet scents, Armani Code, Euphoria, A*men, etc. I wouldn't recommend Fuel for Life - it smells ok I guess but is just unidimensionally sweet. There's really no evolution or anything interesting going on there.

I wouldn't advise buying Terre D'Hermes blind. For all the praise it gets on here, there are a number of naysayers as well, and after receiving a sample of it recently, I'm set to become one of them. It smells ok at first, a fair dose of lemon, grapefruit, cedar, noticeable vetiver, and a lot of pepper. Somehow that all combines to a 'floor cleaner' smell though. It later mellows out, sweetens up a bit even, for a while. I went to do the dishes and kept getting whiffs of what I thought was the dishsoap. Nope, it was Terre. Side by side sniffings with Dawn dishsoap revealed a remarkably similar smell. It IS unique compared to other things I've smelled, but it's not a surefire hit by any means (of course, what is?)

I think you would like M7 based on your other tastes. Yatagan is a monster. The opening is beautiful - pine and other resinous woods (a hint of myrrh perhaps?) - a trace of leather, some bitter artemisia. But it turns into a bitter, extremely leathery, faintly dusty scent in the heart. The gunpowder reference is strikingly accurate.

Other sweet scents I'd suggest sampling are Body Kouros, Lacoste Elegance, Antidote, and Santana. Based on your current likes (a lot of which I enjoy as well), I'd think you'd probably like all of them.

I'd really advise sampling though. One bad blind buy could purchase 10-20 samples.

Nice, thanks for that. I'm going out sampling today and I'll check those out. Feel free to continue discussion.

Heh, I don't mean anything by it. It was just the overall feminine smell it was giving off on my skin, and it reminded me of the body spray a gay coworker of mine uses. You could argue that about half my fragrances are things a gay man would have no problem wearing. :P Wasn't trying to offend, though.

    I own and highly recommend:

    YSL M7
    Baldessarini Ambre
    Diesel Fuel For Life
    Hermes Terre d'Hermes

I also really like Chanel Platinum Egoiste, and will most likely be purchasing it soon.

Kiehl's Original Musk Oil is good to layer with a variety of other fragrances.

Some other fragrances that may be worth sampling are:

    Burberry Brit
    Burberry London
    Gaultier 2
    Gucci Envy
    Lolita Lempicka au Masculin
    Marc Jacobs for Men
    Michael Kors for Men
    Narciso Rodriguez for Men
    Prada Pour Homme
    Tom Ford Black Orchid
    Tom Ford for Men
    Ungaro III
    YSL Kouros
    YSL Rive Gauche pour Homme

    Good luck and happy shopping!

I sampled some more today, though Kentucky affords few niche labels a chance at survival.

Baldessarini Ambre - Wow, this was nothing but whiskey out of the gate, but that note left rather quickly, it developed into a very warm, spicy amber smell which I really liked. I'll probably go back and try it on my skin when I have time/money.

Tommy Bahama Set Sail South Seas - This started off as a very pleasant aquatic, and promptly (within 10 minutes) turned into dish soap. There's a little rum accord in there, but the soapy scent really kills it for me.

Platinum Egoiste - I went and tried it on my skin this time, and it had a totally different personality. The first half hour or so it was a very dark, nearly pungent smell, but as it dried down it lightened noticeably and I was left with that same shimmering sparkling scent that I liked last time, but with some subtle differences; it seems to have more depth on my skin, if that makes sense.

Valentino V - Tried this one on my skin too, and I'm glad I didn't buy this one last time. The combination of citrus and vanilla just don't play well on my skin, and I was honestly reminded of the Orange Julius in the mall back home in Miami. It's not in itself bad, but I can't see when I'd ever wear it when I have Happy and Euphoria.

Hugo XY - I know I'm crazy, but from the first sniff to right now (about 5 hours) I'm getting the unmistakable scent of bananas. It's gotta be two notes in there that are combining to give me this "warm banana bread" vibe, though now that it's dried down I'm also smelling a very nice mint smell.

Lacoste Elegance - Thanks for the recommendation. It's really quite nice, the first thing it reminded me of was Fuel For Life, there's definitely a berry note hiding in there, really a very nice smelly, and I may look into it more.

Nautica Sunset Voyage - Nice, a sort of spicy citrus scent that really did conjure up images of a warm summer nighttime at sea. Cool but I don't plan on returning to it.

Kouros Sport - Surprisingly sporty for something that begins with Kouros. Having not smelled the original, I can't really compare it, but this seemed more like something out of Adidas or Tommy Hilfiger than YSL.

And after all that sampling, I made a decision.

    I bought blind.

I'm now the proud owner of YSL Kouros, and so far I'm loving it. It was nothing like the images I had conjured up, and the animalic notes are starting to creep in. I'll probably return with further impressions later.

I know! It was so absurd, but it was the first thing that came out of my mouth, so it was pretty much honest and from the heart.
