Bvlgari Aqua. First time I sprayed it reminds me of walking on the beach in the winter, with the sky full of clouds, lightning on the horizon. The 'exact memory' - I'm 6 years old walking along a beach in Albany (south-west Australia, gets very cold during winter!) and wearing my bright yellow rain jacket, and my parents are up ahead of me.

Reason why this makes me feel melancholy? Things were so much simpler then, no worries in the world...

Seconded, and I would like to add Vol de Nuit, designed to be melancholic.

Black March. Smells like an open grave on a cold, cloudy day. Nothing much sadder than that.

Usually anything with both strong rose and strong frankincense will be a bit melancholy to me.

Oddly, even though I think it was intended to be melancholy, L'Heure Bleue has never seemed that way to me. Pensive maybe, tiredly contemplating one's life at the end of a busy day. But it's a nice clear night, with a cool breeze that keeps the mind turning.

I agree with the Chanel No 19 post, it has a sombre introspectiveness that is sad. Beautiful and sad at the same time.

    This is a fantastic thread!

    For me it's:
    Angeliques Sous la Pluie
    En Passant
    Avignon

Eau de Rochas PH is one of those scents for me. I wear it when I don't care about peple's attention. Another one would be Guerlain Vetiver, but that one is an answer to all kinds of moods and situations, both good and bad. For me it's the scent I wear when I don't want to think much about what to wear and still get very pleasant experience.

Avignon for me. It evokes a feeling of sadness, when I wear it,but a "good" sadness:the reverence and ritual of the mass. I guess that's the idea,it really works.

On a more "personal" note,I can be made to feel instantly melancholic by the slightest sniff of Cerruti Pour Homme. Not the composition of the fragrance itself, more by the memories and feelings it evokes. A shame as it's my favourite

La Nuit on a woman. Leather, sweat, lust, memories..

And my SotE tonight, Route du Vetiver, on me. Only had tried it from a sample until my bottle came in today.

About 45 minutes into drydown it has now evolved into the strong scent of a hay field, fresh cut and unbailed, still green and glistening in the afternoon sun following a hot summer day's rainstorm. It is a blend of the essences of cut grasses and the occasional wild flowers and weeds that managed to compete successfully with the grasses for sunlight only to fall together in the wake of the fieldhand's scythe. Hauntingly beautiful and strangely melancholic.

Yes... that's a great description... and I love Route du Vetiver... not for everyone... not for everyday... but it reaches thoughts and feelings that other fragrances only try... it's amazing how your description reached my inner eye about this scent!

Burberry London and Gucci PH can both have this effect on me. They remind me of a cool, overcast November Sunday in New England. I really like both of them.

Silences by Jacomo always makes me feel a bit pensive and wistful, which goes all the way into melancholy if the weather is right. Silences to me is one of the scents enhanced by a bit of cool moisture in the atmosphere - fog, mist, etc.

Avignon is the only scent to invoke melancholy in my mind. Musty books, old incense and a stone church that is empty and has been left almost to ruin.

Encre Noire is a pensive, somewhat melancholy scent on me, especially considering the friendliness and bubbly charm that comes oozing out of just about everything else I own. Encre Noire to me is like a sad, solemn melody without adornment.

It reminds me of Erik Satie's Trois Danse de Travers:

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? You make it sound like Eau de Dementor.

And do you mean the Gucci Pour Homme that came out in 2003?

Are you sure there's not a Dementor nearby?

Later: Rats, T.Rex! You beat me to the punchline!

Later still: I stand by my original suggestion of Voleur de Roses as an exquisitely melancholy scent, although aubrgene's Eau Noire is a good choice. Under certain circumstances, Black Orchid might fit the bill, too.

I looked in my closet and now I'm depressed that I have nothing to wear when I'm depressed. Which means that right now I have nothing to wear. Seriously, everything I have is on the brighter side and I'm a melancholy personality. I have just ordered Gucci PH blindly and from what I am reading this may just do the trick. I'm so happy that soon I may well smell sad. Good thread.

Agreed.. I get some element of that with the others in the incense line (I'm still testing the rest), but Avignon stands in a league of its own.
