Default Looking for a designer Amber

I've recently noticed that my collection has a large hole were an Amber fragrance should sit.

I just recently started working again, so I can't quite justify paying niche prices, yet. I have a sample of Montale Blue Amber and MPG Amber Precieux and if had the disposable $$ I'd buy one of these immediately.

I tried Armani Prive Ambre Soie (there was an open box at my local TJ Maxx), and even though it is quite good, it's not what I'm looking for. It's too dry.

Is there any designer Amber that is close to the quality of these? Or even something reasonable that will fill in the gap in my collection until my savings look healthier?

I actually like both of those, but they're not quite what I'm looking for.

The Montale and MPG both have a warm creaminess in the way the Amber is presented. Prada and Baldessarini don't have that.

My favorite designer amber is YSL Opium EDT (the women's version), but quite unisex IMO.

There is also YSL Opium pour Homme - I prefer the EDP over the EDT.

Although they are not designer fragrances, Ava Luxe has some nice ambers at a reasonable price (less than many designer frags). Ambra Tibet is really nice as is Ambre Antique.

I'll second that notion, nice amber all around.

    I reach for Etro's Ambra.

There are days when it's too sweet to bear but on others Laura Biagiotti's Roma does a nice turn on an ambery dry down. It's very warm so if you're a North American you should probably try it while it's still cold or at least cool.

Others disagree with me, but Ed Hardy Man smells very similar to niche ambers to my nose.
Another filler scent would be Black XS, which is very ambery after an hour or so.

Also, KL Homme by Lagerfeld if you want a spicy, vanilla/geranium amber. I have to dilute it because the geranium is too much for me.

Youth Dew's ambery, bath oil can be had for a mere pittance.

The true budget buy I found was Kuumba Made oils at Whole Foods. The amber paste smells like Profumum Ambra Aurea. A small bottle is $10 and can be extended by dilution. The health food store used to carry something called Blue Pearl (IIRC), and the amber was quite warm and sensuous. I haven't seen it around in a while, but it could still be out there.

Otherwise, the next notch up for very satisfying but affordable ambers is Ava Luxe. I dont' remember trying Ambra Antique, but Ambra Nepal is a comforting, sweet vanilla amber.

Some of people really like Yves Rocher, and this line has an amber scent. Personally, I find there is always an ingredient in YR fragrances that doesn't agree with me, but the scents themselves are done quite well.

EDIT--Sorry for misnaming the Ava Luxe. Ambra Nepal is a Profumi Firenze. The AL is actually Ambra Tibet.

Oh yes, this is Voile d'Ambre... Very nice.

At the upper range of "designer prices" but totally worth is Ambre Russe by Parfum d'Empire. 50 ml can be had at LuckyScent for $75 (get free shipping with coupon MUA). This stuff is amazingly rich and opulent, long lasting and a little goes a long way. You can also find a decant on split scent wiki for roughly $1.5-2/ml

Lacoste Elegance is an amber with a bit of a chocolate undertone. Worth checking out, as it's probably among the cheapest of the designer ambers.

I'll throw in a mention for L'Eau d'Ambre and Ambre Extreme from L'Artisan.

And, no amber thread is really complete without Ambre Sultan from Serge Lutens.

I just remembered another one--Marc Jacobs Amber Splash. It is as cheap as a drugstore fragrance (per ounce price), but without the harshness. It is a light, soft amber, short lived--but with the huge JUG it comes in, you can apply lots!

So how come he just keeps getting recommendations for niche ambers - which he plainly said he doesn't want to spend the money on, else he'd have bought the MPG one?

This is the epitome of a gourmand amber; its a sweet orange-y, almond-y vanillic amber that smells so good you wish you could eat it.

Right on spot, HOWEVER ( ) Serge Lutens Ambre Sultan is going for 42 Euros on German ebay sometimes at a reliable seller, which is less than you pay for a designer in the stores here.

Voile d'Ambre, sure. You can buy mine, I'm looking to offload it. It's nice but does not agree with me - something I found out after buying it, obviously.
In all seriousness though: L'Occitane Ambre. Nutty, syrupy, niiiiice.
    Zara Ambar seconded/thirded/fourthed/whatever.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

    Dimitri said it, Zara Ambar.

Veuve Amiot is right too: If you don't care much about sweetness, go for L'Occitane's Amber. It is stronger, however, more femenine.

Yes Surr! you are correct about my confusing the descriptions of Ambra. I know this is into "niche" and off the "designer" amber topic, but I felt good about recommending Omnia Profumo Ambra even though it is a niche amber. I confused my description of Ambra in reading my sampling notes with Ambra Nera by Farmacia Annunziata - both are named Ambra - my mistake! I appreciate the correction!
