Ladies and Gentlemen of Basenotes Nation I salute you, week # 14 of SotW was the best entry yet. Full of thrills for a poor number cruncher like me. It also had it's share of sadness as this week Yves St. Laurent passed away and that would have a huge effect on the tally this week. Before I report that tally, a moment of silence for the man who only needs three initials YSL.
Now on with this week's raw numbers.
Total posts 1,128 first time over a 1,000 and up almost 200 from last week's 941
Total number of scents mentioned, 614, tying the high in week 12 and up from 557 last week
Scents mentioned a single time, 405 for an individuality index of 35.9%; down from 41.2% last week and the lowest individuality index ever.
That individuality index number being so low can easily be explained as we had two synchronized wear days this past week one scheduled, the Jean Claude Ellena SSD on Saturday; and one unscheduled, the YSL Memorial SSD on Monday. In truth the YSL wears extended throughout the week but there was a huge cluster on Monday. Along with those two events the ladies again wanted to own the number one spot and their candidate this week was L de Lolita Lempicka. All of these combined to drive the individuality index to a new low. It also led to the first top 10 where every entry was in double digits. It also led to multiple plot lines. The Ellena SSD would boost Terre D'Hermes' numbers could it regain the #1 spot? Could the ladies take L de Lolita Lempicka to #1 and place one of "their" scents in the #1 spot for the third week running? The overwhelming outpouring of respect for YSL, would it place one of his scents in the #1 spot?
Saturday's SSD around Ellena was indeed the Hermes show as not only Terre D'Hermes scored highly but also both of the "Jardin" scents, en Mediterranee and sur le Nil, posted their highest wear numbers. The Ellena Hermessence scents also were represented by at least two wears across the board. 73 (6.5%) members posted. After Terre D'Hermes; Frederic Malle L'Eau D'Hiver was the second most worn Ellena on the day.
Monday's unofficial YSL Memorial SSD was a smashing success leading to the highest single wear day of tracking ever. Many members wore two scents in honor of the man. 161 entries (14.3%) posted over the week were YSL frags. Easily the highest number by any house and one likely not to be beaten. As a result of this show of respect seven of the top 10 slots are occupied by YSL scents. One thing I found really interesting were the comments as the chosen frags were posted. Outside of M7, Rive Gauche pour Homme, and Kouros; most of the other members of the line have rarely gotten much wear. As people went to their wardrobe to find which YSL scents they owned I got the sense that a few people rediscovered some old friends that might see some more wear over the near term. If that turns out to be true that will be the most fitting tribute for the man who said "Fashion dies but style remains"
Tavorna tabbed L de Lolita Lempicka as the ladies' standard bearer for Week 14 and it enjoyed a consistent amount of wears throughout the week. I got the feeling that this one wasn't as widely enjoyed as Champs-Elysees and Jicky based on some poster's comments.
Special mention has to be made about Creed Green Irish Tweed which made it into the top 10 based solely on its support without any SSD's or organized campaign to get increased wears.
The top 10 for May 31st-June 6th 2008
1.) L de Lolita Lempicka 28 wears (2.5%)
2.) Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme 25 wears (2.2%)
3.) Terre D'Hermes 23 wears (2.0%)
4.) Yves St. Laurent Kouros 13 wears (1.2%)
5.) Yves St. Laurent L'Homme 12 wears (1.1%)
6.) Yves St. Laurent M7 11 wears (1.0%)
6.) Yves St. Laurent Opium 11 wears (1.0%)
6.) Yves St. Laurent Opium pour Homme 11 wears (1.0%)
6.) Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche 11 wears (1.0%)
10.) Creed Green Irish Tweed 10 wears (0.9%)
Two more YSL scents just missed out Paris and pour Homme. CDG Monocle Scent One:Hinoki, Frederic Malle L'Eau D'Hiver, Guerlain Habit Rouge and the two previously mentioned Hermes Jardins, round out the just missed list.
I have been hugely entertained this past week Basenotes Nation you have shown that style does indeed remain.
As always you keep wearing 'em and I'll keep counting 'em
Have a well-fragranced week.
