    Default Best of Basenotes

Sometimes we get requests to make a useful thread a sticky. We dont tend to do this as if we did it with every good thread, we'd have about ten pages of stickies.

Instead, I propose we open a 'library' which showcases the best threads, the ones which we can point new members to, and the ones older members can still learn from.

So your post your nominations please for the best threads on BN and I'll add them to this post (if accepted).

Please provide the link to the thread

    Fragrance Discussion

    Perfumery and note identification

OK. I will personally begin my choices with what has become my favorite stop on Basenotes.

WIth nearly 1% of the over half million posts logged on Basenotes since it's April, 2007 inception by our own Netherlander BrothaG, a small but dedicated group of players has had a lot of fun and interaction. So Guess The Fragrance By The Picture gets my vote as one of the Best on Basenotes.

Great suggestion! SotW is a must. I was actually getting nervous when I didn't see it due to the recent server upgrade outage. And if there were some way to make old SotDs more organized - especially for old days when we are post-posting, that would be awesome.

I'd suggest two, but it would need changed each month:

What have you bought (month, year)?

What have you tried (month, year)?

The "what have you tried" is new in June, I think. But I find myself going to them often since they usually contain mini-reviews.

Thanks, people, for mentioning my threads Note Identification Project and Montale Reviews. I'm truly glad that you are enjoying them. I've had a nice time writing them.

I do love it when people go in-depth about subjects.
Among my favorite threads were these classic case studies (which have already been mentioned):

    Vibrant Violet - Best Sandalwood:
    http://community.basenotes.net/showt...ght=sandalwood

    wicozani - Vetiver Redux:
    http://community.basenotes.net/showt...hlight=vetiver

Another favorite was this fun guessing game:
    Twolf - 3 x 3 Blind Sniff
    http://community.basenotes.net/showt...=197582&page=2
You will have to search for this thread in several different places, because it was separated into sub-threads, also.

My favorite, most recent philosophy threads:
seattlelight - My Attitude Adjustment to the New
    http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=211563
    and
Quarry - What have you learned/figured out lately?
    http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=209882

I hate to nominate another one of my own, but I still have one drop of perfume in a little vial that travelled 10,000 miles. This happened at a difficult time in my life, and Riannon send me the thread in the mail, and I still cry when I read it.
Djedi - A True Fragrance Experience
    http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=194823

Plus there have been so many funny, funny threads on this forum, but I cannot remember their specific names, and the list of previous posts has been truncated, so I can't find them. I still want to thank everyone for all their clever remarks that made me laugh so many times over the years.

The new Mainstream vs. Niche: A Statistical Effort is something I'd love to see more people dive into. It's getting good comment. Not sure if it's been done before as a discussion, but the poll and measurement angle (Irish is adamant that we actually count frags) makes it better than anecdotal and far more interesting.

I'd like to second Quarry's What Have You Learned Thread, particularly for Purplebird's May 7th post that begins with the words, "Never say never." It is very sage advice that can be applied to many things in life, and is something I've gone back and read several times to hopefully permanently impress these wise words upon my stubborn, occasionally foolish brain. In fact, if you'll indulge me, I'll just paste verbatim:

Never say never. (I cannot wear...)
Never say always. (My favorite is...)
Learn to let go. (Reformulation. Discontinuation.)
Hoarding is a form of paranoia. (See previous.)
There will always be something else. (See two previous.)
Friends make everything better. (Basenotes. I am not alone in this.)
Natural extracts smell way different from synthetics. (Both are necessary.)
Eddie: Sweetie, what are you drinking?
Patsy: Oh, this? Chanel No. 5.

Thanks Oud Girl. Lord knows I try.
And I appreciated this bit of wisdom from Quarry:
"The personal processing of scent--taking in, examining, contemplating--is a journey I never imagined or would have respected, until it happened to me. And now I understand that even when my study or growth seems to have stalled, the subconscious and the marketplace and others' artistic invention continue to move forward, so we need never fear the end of stimulus or the arrival of boredom. Man ... that got heavy real fast. What's in this coffee, and can I have another cup?"
