Default Tom Ford Private Blend - Italian Cypress, Arabian Wood & Champaca Absolute

Some of us know about the new additions to the TF Private Blend Line.

    Taken from Scented Salamander:

Italian Cypress will be exclusive to the Milan Tom Ford boutique; persisting in his avowed taste for the Seventie's (see Gucci pour Homme and Yves Saint Laurent M7) Ford said,

"It's a very Seventie's gentlemen's fragrance, the kind that you don't encounter very much any more."

Arabian Wood was designed specifically with the boutique in Kuwait in mind and will launch in September 2008.

Champaca Absolute is part of the general Private Blend collection.

The city-exclusives will join the permanent line up after 6 months.

Started a new thread so people can post their comments, thoughts and opinions. Also, Italian Cypress is available NOW at the Milan flagstore store. Any of you italians try it out yet (starring at Magnificent)?

I haven't smelled any of them and i'm not sure if a listing of notes has been posted somewhere already, but this is what i've heard about Italian Cypress:

    top: Mandarin, Bergamot, Galbanum, Spearmint
    heart: Cypress, Clove Buds, Basil
base: Labdanum, Moss, Cist Absolute, Patchouli

Thanks for the list of notes. It's available now at the Milan flagship store. I'll probably have to place an order through TPC (which I don't really want to do) to test some.

Goddamn, must the man be so PROLIFIC? I've barely even had a chance to check out the original 13.

Italian Cypress sounds like it just might be my sort of thing.

You know, on the "Nudity in Perfume Ads", some people were saying that Ford's (mis?)use of pornography-style, exploitative imagery had ruined them for anything that he produces. I'm not a big fan (at ALL) of his taste in advertising concepts, but I have to say, the man is turning out to be quite a force in modern perfumery. Is he even bothering with designing clothes anymore?

Italian Cypress sounds bomb-diggity good, doesn't it guys? I'm with nsamadi - I'll be ordering a decant as soon as I can (as if I need more decants!).

I remember when I first encountered a cypress prominent fragrance - it was a sample of Cypress Musc by Creed (thanks to my sis ComDiva) and I wore it on a very hot, sunny day to the office. I was blown away. That torn tree limb accord mixed with a resinous wood base was really wonderful and I remember coming back here on BN and blabbing all about it.

Since then, I've yet to encounter another cypress scent that really turned my crank (Acqua di Parma's Cipresso Di Toscana didn't smell like cypress at all - instead it smelled like Tuscany by Aramis, which was kind of strange...). Maybe IC will.

I left TPC a note and got a response back. They should be getting some in soon, when they get the connections to do so.

Here's a video interview with Tom Ford in his Milan store, he speaks about his perfumes briefly. I thought it was a funny clip, it looks like he doesn't care to want to speak.

Wow. That was really interesting, actually, not so much for the stated content as the odd tension between interviewer and subject.

And, huh, Mr. Ford seems to have caught a genuinely nasty case of "I'm-really-English"-itis. I wonder if he caught it from Madonna. He was born in Austin, Texas, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone from Texas ever say the word "last" so that it rhymes with "cost"..."laahhhst".

Oh well, if I could get away with faking a Brit accent, I probably would. Unfortunately, my friends would all openly mock me and loudly inform strangers that I was born in a North Carolina town so small it doesn't even exist anymore.

Oh, and if you guys love me, you'll get me a Tom Ford leather messenger bag for Christmas.

Arabian Wood is probably Oud Wood redux / deluxe [yawn] . He may be able to pull the wool over the eyes of naive Westerners, with his lame oud offerings, but most definitely not with the citizens of Kuwait or its neighbouring countries...

Maybe that's the new Texas accent. I mean Bush is from CT and he speaks with a drawl so maybe it's not fake and people from Texas really sound like Prince Charles. I've lived in 19 cities but never in Texas so who knows.

I always figured Ford to be fun loving and laid back not pretentious. Disappointing.

    Cheers,
    Al

    Ok folks,
here I am after having been at Tom Ford Boutique downtown to check out Italian Cypress.
The impression is positive: definitely from the 70's but fortunately less 70's than I expected, at least less old 70's a la Rive Gauche PH thankfully.
The juice itself opens with a good load of balsamic cypress staying away from being sweet or too minty or soapy. It's very green and slightly bitter probably due to touches of bergamot peel, quite true to the cypress berries and resin smell. The guy there told me it's been obtained from cypress wood but I also suspect a slight touch of galbanum hehe. Anyway the juice melts then opening a bit to something more airy and slightly sweeter and spicier, like a jasmine touch mixed with a dose of carnation I guess, nothing decidedly floral, just a hint of spicy roundness to tame down the more bitter opening. The base has vetiver to keep it green and moist, but probably also a touch of patchouli and animalic notes, but all very light. The main aspects of this juice still focus on balsamic, green and woody-moist aspects not going too much off-theme. It's definitely masculine without being too 70's hairy chested macho finally from Mr. Ford. Something worth if you like woody-green male scents and since I'm a bit of galbanum lover I could see myself owning a decant of it sooner or later hehe...

    Trebor,
Oud Wood neither smells much like Oud nor is it a blatant copy or "inspired" by some popular middle eastern fragrance. Although if Arabian Wood is anywhere similar to Oud Wood, then I don't see it doing well in Kuwait.

I just wanted to mention a very nice basenoter who lives not far from the Milan flagstore store is organizing a bottle split of Italian Cypress...

    http://community.basenotes.net/showthread.php?t=213884

Anyone interested, please get in contact with him. It's a Milan only exclusive at the moment and TPC doesn't even have it. A great way to try the scent and the split is done at cost. I'm already in and now there's very few spaces left.

I'm extremely tempted to pull the trigger on this unsniffed, but I think I need to sample this first. Some TF's work wonderfully for me, and others don't.

I sampled a 1.5ml of Italian Cypress. Bought a 5ml decant and it's almost gone. Decided I want more and will be buying a bottle. It's my favorite of the Tom Ford Private line. I have tried them all except Arabian Wood and Champaca . Italian Cypress should be high on your sample list if your into wood frags at all.

There is only one Tom Ford boutique in New York (845 Madison Avenue) and they do not have Italian Cypress (I just got off the phone with them). It is exclusive to the TF boutique in Italy until March 2009.

What?!... The person (from a well known decanting website ) said it might possibly be in Bergdorf Goodmans. But if the official boutique doesn't have it... Maybe they got it mixed up with Champaca Absolute. I'll investigate further.

So who's up for buying a few bottles of Italian Cypress for us basenotes members?? We must have a few Italians here!

Since Im an official Tom Ford Cult member I picked up a bottle of both of these recently. I've worn Italian Cypress a few times now and I'm really liking it. I am not very familiar with Cypress notes. The only other one I have smelled is Blu Med Cipresso Toscano (sp?) which i didn't care for and Unfortunately my newbie nose cant pick out most notes but I'll give it a shot anyways.

The top notes are Cypress and maybe some light flowers with a very creamy smooth mint in the background. I also detect a hint of soap. A very very smooth soap. In fact more like a suggestion of soap than actual soap. Then on the dry down I can detect something almost like amber but not quite (maybe its the galbanum).

IT reminds me of something I've smelled but I cannot put my finger on it. IT is also definitely one of the lighter fragrances from the private blend line and although it wears closer to the skin than I would like, it does last at least 5 hours on me. In any case it, I predict that this will more than likely be one of the top sellers from the private blend line since it just smells good and isn't trying to challange your nose. I also suspect that many BN'ers might pass on it because of the same reason.

I have not worn Arabian Woods enough to comment on it yet.

I am sending samples of both of these scents to a much more experienced nose who I am sure be able to describe the fragrance better than I can.

I tried Champaca Absolute at Bergdorfs last week and I loved it. That said, I'm not planning on buying it. I like the smell of many of the Tom Ford Private Reserves, but not one of them have really grabbed my attention. They're all so "well done" but none of them really have much to say.

Ok, So I've had a chance to wear Arabian Woods a few times recently. I am not very good with reviews or verbalizing what I smell so I wont bore you with a noob review. But it does smell sort of like something I've tried before and although not entirely the same it reminds me very much of Amouage Silver - for men. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they flat out copied it.

Just in case anyone is interested they both last about the same amount on me. I think the TF might be stronger.

I have three samples from Tom Ford, Oud Wood, Amber Absolute, and Black Violet,

    Amber Absolute is my favorite!

Oud Wood, only lasts about 2 hours for me and not crazy about it to begin with. Black Violet is ok but kind of boring.

I am tempted to buy Amber Absolute but wanted to explore other ambers before I did.

I am excited to try these other Tom Ford Italian Cypress and Arabian Wood. Next time I am at Bergdorf or Saks I will stop by and see if they have any word when they will be getting some.

I may be off my rocker, but Italian Cypress reminds me a lot of the warmth of Bond No 9 New Haarlem... and I love it.

Jury's still out on Arabian Wood - there are moments I like it, and some I don't. I have actually 'worn' either so I may end up changing my mind on it.
