    Default SotW August 9th-15th, 2008

Good Evening Scented Folks this is Somerville Metro Man reporting from Basenotes City, home of the 2008 Scentlympic Games. Tonight we are going to focus on the competition over in the scentnastics hall, where we see what Week 24 brings in the way of spills, thrills, and chills.
Week 24 set a new high for number of posts with 1,144 total posts.
It also set a new high for number of different scents mentioned at 677.
441 of those scents were worn just once for an individuality index of 38.5% our second lowest since combining the boards.
The last time the individuality index was that low there was a massive wear of Yves St. Laurent scents in reaction to his death. What caused this week’s low number? Blame it on Serge……Serge Lutens. Serge Lutens had the highest house week that wasn’t fueled by some kind of organized wear. 76 total wears over 28 different scents most of them worn three times or higher. Incredible amounts of support from both genders and for a diverse set of scents. Behind this comes Guerlain with 59 wears over 26 scents, Creed 56 wears over 23 scents, Hermes 37 wears over 16, and Chanel 32 wears over 20. These five houses made up 260 wears (22.7%) and 113 scents (16.7%). This is why they are the big 5 here on Basenotes.
Comme des Garcons almost had as diverse a wear week as Serge Lutens as it bounces back on total wears to usual levels but spread out over many more scents. Bvlgari continues its three week trend of being higher. Also up for the same three weeks Montale and Neil Morris have benefitted from being front and center with discount banners on the site. The Neil Morris deal just ended and it will be interesting to see if those numbers stay up or trend back to the levels before.
Vijay’s Montale deal, I think, will keep those numbers up for the near-future. Finally, after an off week, Tom Ford roars back with a big week. That’s it for the team competition now its time for the individual all-around.
This week four of the top 5 are long-time members of the top 10 starting with the top two of Guerlain Vetiver followed by Hermes Terre D’Hermes. These are the two tent-pole scents of SotW and it is never a surprise to see them. Terre D’Hermes has now been in every top 10 for 24 weeks. Guerlain Vetiver has been there for 19 out of 24. At number three, after the week the house had it should be no surprise to see Serege Lutens Chergui. Its here predominantly on the women wearing it a lot this week. The next two scents are also regular visitors to the top 10 and they are Creed Green Irish Tweed and Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme. There are five scents which make their appearance after longer than 8 week layoffs in Bvlgari Black, Le Labo Rose 31. Serge Lutens Musc Kublai Khan, Parfums de Nicolai New York, and Parfum D’Empire Ambre Russe. Comme des Garcons Monocle Scent One: Hinoki, Creed Silver Mountain Water, Montale Black Aoud, Thierry Mugler Cologne and Domenico Caracini 1913 all make up the usual suspects list. Making their debut this week are Guerlain Derby and Bvlgari Omnia. Four of the scents make it on the support of the ladies, and Silver Mountian Water has the most unisex wear this week.
Here are the final individual standings for Week 24
    SotW August 9th -15th, 2008
    1.) Guerlain Vetiver 14 wears (1.2%)
    2.) Hermes Terre D’Hermes 12 wears (1.0%)
    3.) Serge Lutens Chergui 10 wears (0.9%)
4.) Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme 9 wears (0.8%)
5.) Creed Green Irish Tweed 8 wears (0.7%)
    5.) Le Labo Rose 31 8 wears (0.7%)
7.) Comme des Garcons Monocle Scent one: Hinoki 7 wears (0.6%)
7.) Creed Silver Mountain Water 7 wears (0.6%)
    7.) Parfum D’Empire Ambre Russe 7 wears (0.6%)
    10.) Bvlgari Black 6 wears (0.5%)
    10.) Bvlgari Omnia 6 wears (0.5%)
    10.) Domenico Caraceni 1913 6 wears (0.5%)
    10.) Guerlain Derby 6 wears (0.5%)
    10.) Montale Black Aoud 6 wears (0.5%)
10.) Parfums de Nicolai New York 6 wears (0.5%)
10.) Serge Lutens Musc Kublai Khan 6 wears (0.5%)
    10.) Thierry Mugler Cologne 6 wears (0.5%)

There were 15 scents just one wear out of making it into the top 10. Most notable in that group were Lanvin Arpege pour Homme, Donna Karan Black Cashmere, Paco Rabanne pour Homme, Molinard Habanita and Montale Red Vetyver which is making its case for best new men’s scent after Hinoki. Estee Lauder Sensuous which looks to be the ladies version of Hinoki was back down this week after a huge week last week. We will see whether it finally sticks its landing or continues to take a step on its dismount over the next few weeks. That’s it from the scentnastic competition here at the Scentlympic Games.
As always, you keep wearing ‘em and I’ll keep counting ‘em.
    Have a well-fragranced week.

Pretty impressive, isn't it, Matthew? And fascinating stuff. I would bet there are some industry folks that are really happy to see these figures every week, too (or unhappy, as the case may be). I love SotW so much, I'm checking it out from a moving laptop, bearing down fast on one of my favorite rest stops, Terre d'Haute. But the battery is running down, so I have to watch out. Plus, it looks like roaming is upon us. Thanks again, Metro Man!

SMM is a statistician; he crunches numbers for a living. It really is a testament to enjoying your work.

Bravo, top-grade work as always. I'm always a little bummed when I see the breakdown because apparently I'm completely uncultured, having even tried only 4 of 17 (and owning only 3).

Really looking forward to trying out Hinoki and Black Aoud.
