Thread: Cartier Roadster - WOW!!

  1. #1

Thumbs up Cartier Roadster - WOW!!

Today I tried two new scents - "Power" by Kenzo and "Roadster" by Cartier.
The first is a nice flowery fragrance halfway between Diorīs "Homme" and Gaultierīs "Fleur du Male", but the latter is the one that stands out from the crowd!
Iīve never smelled mint that well blended - itīs great! Mint accompanied by citrus notes and well-grounded on deep woody accords - that works miraculously ! Thank you, Mathilde Laurent!!

I actually thought mint in Roadster was not pleasant at all....it was wayyy too creamy and heavy and didnt work well with the vetiver and citrus in the fragrance.....interesting idea but bad execution

Just picked this up today, but haven't opened it yet. I'm starting to think it smells like Eau de Cartier. So now I'm thinking..........should I open or return it?

one thing it doesnt smell like.....which is Eau De Cartier...

it does share some green notes with the Concentree version of Eau de Cartier.

Roadster is a very strong fragrance with good sillage and projection with its power the opposite of eau de cartier as well.

Wow! I didn't think Cartier had it still in them to produce a power scent since Santos (which is not near the strenght as when it first came out).

Roadster is powerful just a like a performance sports car - it leaves a impact with sillage and is very long lasting it is still going strong on my arm.

I don't feel a Concentree version of this scent would ever need to be released.

Just got back from Bloomie's about half an hour ago and I had a totally different experience with Roadster. I agree with acceptfacts that the mint was not pleasant at all and was too creamy ... almost figgy like Joe Malone's fig scent. Thankfully, the mint lasted all of about 10 minutes and then was completely gone. Now, half an hour later, I don't know what the heck is on the back of my hand. All I know is that I can barely detect it and I gave my hand a good 6 shots of the stuff. Thankfully, this saves me a lot of money as I was prepared to spend over a hundred bucks for the 3.4 if I liked the stuff.

On the other hand, the Kenzo Power I sampled is still going strong but I didn't walk away with a bottle of this either because I know I've smelled something similar but can't put my finger on it right now. May be worth a purchase when it gets to Scentiments or Beautyencounter, but not for me for full price.

Well, to my ( very inexperienced ) nose, the mint only lasted for the first 10 or 15 minutes and then POOF ... it was gone. Roadster's gotten some good press around here so I wouldn't get too disappointed just yet Mike.

Maybe your nose was overwhelmed by the intensity of the aroma and just shut down (pure speculation).

Can anybody compare it too to Selection Verte (mint/lime) or Green Water, my fave mints? It sounds thicker, like an after-dinner mint.

Roadster's mint lasted longer on me. I think like 2 or 3 hours.

Selection vert is somewhat similar in that they share mint but its brighter more transparent and has that Creed signature style. Roadster has the mint plus vanilla plus woods (I did not smell too much wood in there). Its been a bit since i smelled SV so correct me if im wrong but I dont remember vanilla in it.

I got much more vetiver than mint in this one off my skin... I pre-ordered it at Nordstrom based on what I smelled. It's been a while since Cartier did any men's scent, and I've always liked most of what they've done.

I have to agree with this at least with the drydown smell. It is thicker/darker compared to Eau de Cartier, but there is a strong similarity in my opinion.

Edit: OK, I think maybe it's the Concentree version that I was comparing Roadster with.

This is how it smelled to me when I sprayed it on paper strip. It smells completely different when I sprayed it on my skin. I think this is a fragrance that should be tested on skin rather than on paper strips.

I am a fan of Dirty English as well...and love a good mint in my fragrance....but when i tried Roadster on my skin, the mint (which entire purpose is to make the fragrance fresh and icy) actually does the opposite in this case by making the vetiver/grass seem soaked and saturated with oil and cream......it reminded me of how it would feel sitting on a beautiful grassy front yard in a 108 degree heat with high humidity.......... the drydown was even less pleasant as the creators tried to make the drydown seem "spicy" yet it turned more foul and spoiled.....

i got two full samples at home...I will give it another full run.

Finally I got a sample of Roadster yesterday so today it's my SOTD.
I'm positively impressed for now. Mint here is not at all sweet or creamy on me, just full bodied but not sweet or creamy, and it gets fainter later but still pervades all the drydown brulling into the notes of an earthy but not too loud patchouli-cistus base that's decidedly masculine and longlasting. It's patchouli and not chocolate here, ok, but to give you an idea the whole accord can be compared to an after eight chocolate, unsweet, green yet thick. Thumbs up.

    smelled it yesterday
first you get a creamy mint, excessively too creamy to my nose, seems like concentrated toothpaste and smells quite artificial
and then comes a bitter note that appears not connected with the mint
and then i gave up ...

from far i prefer the way mint was treated in the new Guerlain Homme : fresh , natural , elegant
    to sell :
    - D'Orsay: Arome 3 (3.4 oz spray) never used

My favorite minty frag is Samba Nova for men. It's got rosewood and a "clean smoke" quality. The mint isn't too strong, and overall this one should cost a lot more than it sells for these days (decent sillage and longevity too).

I got two samples yesterday: Guerlain Homme and Cartier Roadster, but I had the opposite feeling smelling them.
Said that I don't feel the mint in roadster sintetic at all, Guerain homme is the fresher for sure, fresh, slightly floral, even more slightly woody (and quite boring) and the base is... rien. absolutely nothing. after the middle notes it's completely gone. Roadster it's not only more longlasting, but also far more sophisticated and classy.

No, not really. It sounds too 'food-y'. I think I want to eat creamy minty things not wear them.

Mind you, I love mint notes in my fragrances. I own Peppermint (Sherbet Series) and Mint (Leaves Series) by Comme des Garcons; Booster by Lacoste and Feuille Verte by Creed - all very mint prominent.

But a creamy mint note just sounds icky.

Yesterday was smelling Roadster together with my fragrant friend. I do like the herbal character of Roadster. And mint there is not disturbing to my nose. A friend of my told me she was definitely smelling a berry undertone. After a minute of hard thinking and smelling we found it - mulberry (morus). A really nice one and working perfectly with herbs.

I also tested this a couple of days ago. I do see some similarities with Dirty English, but Roadster is more "grown up" and sophisticated, but not in an old man sort of way.

I don't get the "creamy mint" at all. Just a nice blast of mint.

I wear Roadster on and on (Iīm absolutely addicted!), and I get very positive comments on it! The more I wear it, the more I see a relationship to Jicky EdT. Roadsterīs key-note is mint softened with vanilla; Jickyīs key-note is lavender, again softened with vanilla. Roadster is an "After-Eight"- confection and Jicky is a confection of lavender.
Both scents open with a blast of herbs (lavender/mint) surrounded by woods, accented with an animalic touch and grounded on a semi-oriental base.
I always thought of Roadster as a very Guerlain-like fragrance - no wonder, Mathilde Laurent was in-house-perfumer at Guerlain for eleven years!

Escada pour Homme for booze? I don't think so.

Walked into Bloomys the other night and I appoached two SA's standing next to The Beat-Burberry and Roadster-Carier. What happened next has never happened to me in any of my travels to the states. I reached for The Beat to spray it and she quietly says to me "You're not going to like that." I said "Oh really?" I than spritzed the Roadster. She quietly whispers "You're not going to like that either." I just laughed.

Roadster is not for me. You knew instantly that this fragrance was created by Cartier. But the mint, well I realized that this note does not sit well with me from beginning to end.

I bought a bottle of Roadster a few weeks ago (mainly because I just WANTED a new scent). After using it for some time, I still find it quiet and unobtrusive (I like that) but somehow mismatched and increasingly boring. It lacks mystery and panache, I think.

And the bottle is completely overdone. Much too heavy.

It's patchouli and not chocolate here, ok, ....Thumbs up.
A full wearing might confirm what you say. I only tried it on my arm. Feeling I may have gotten distracted after the first hour because I couldn't remember much from hour two onwards, I had to repeat the experiment twice. I enjoyed everything I could pick up during the first hour and some more - and then it's almost gone! Under the line I am disappointed how it kept disappearing from my arm instead of settling into the basenotes promised. Now there isn't enough left for a full wearing. I'll probably remember this as one of those fragrances where 99% of the (rather moderate) budget was thrown into the top notes.

I absolutely love the top notes. But as it dried down, I became quite bored with it - turned into nothing special or exciting. I will test it some more, but I am disappointed in how it transitioned.
