Pine -- hard to find, my holy grail
Cypress -- close to pine. Those haunting dry wood scents.
Lavender -- dry, not a hint of sweetness, and very natural

I love fern/oakmoss but I think to get that scent I love it has to be combined in a fougere, with lavender and other things.

    Great thread!

'Leather' or 'Cuir' - this is can be an amorphous concept, as sometimes leather is hinted at instead of an actual note. The actual leather of Cuiron, Royal English Leather, and Cuir d'Iris is what I like.

Iris - my most recent note to seek out. Right now my favorites are TDC Bois d'Iris, L'Occitane Notre Flore Iris, SL Iris Silver Mist, and Hermes Hiris

"Bois" - this generic wood term runs the gambit, from Dior Bois d'Argent to Chanel Bois des Iles, but usually this note in the title suggests I'll like the fragrance. PG's Bois Blond is amazing.

I would say either Amber or Cedarwood and If I had to pick one for the worst I would say Vetiver....The two of us just don't get along =(

As I am a Bulgarian and since we are the biggest (or maybe even the only) exporter of high quality rose oil for perfume industry, the rose is my favorite note - a fragrance on its own - although it is used more frequently in feminine fragrances though.
