Diptyque's Tam Dao and Villoresi's Sandalo are both excellent (I've sampled both, but have as of yet bought neither). I'd give the nod to Tam Dao as my favorite.

Art of Shaving Sandalwood Essential Oil
    Trumpers Sandalwood Cologne
    Chanel Egoiste
    Floris Santal
    Gucci Envy
    S.T. Dupont Signature
    MPG's Santal Noble

I liked Villoresi's Sandolo too - but someone asked me why I was wearing a women's perfume.

    My fave sandalwoods:
Tam Dao is a wonderful minimalist sandalwood, simple and meditative.
Santal Noble is rich and multi-layered with a great coffee note, and lingering mossy basenotes.
Etro's Sandalo is a sophisticated hippie sandalwood with a headshoppy patchouli/raw resins/amber accord under a heady floral (mainly rose?) component.
Yep, and it's getting to be sandalwood season again. It feels good to dress in layers and wear sandalwood, even just the oil, close to the skin so that it drifts out namelessly. Sandalwood often has the quality of being nearly inaudible and yet definitely there in the atmosphere. Like the lowest pipes on a big cathedral organ, more a rumble than a sound. Hooray for late summer, the sad smile of the year. Thanks for a (to me, anyway) timely thread!

My current top is Chanel's Bois des Iles. Esp. in its highest concentration/parfum it is incredibly smooth, refined and timeless scent that is very rich in sandalwood.

Sandalwood by Geo F. Trumper is my favorite - but I am a little hesitant to recommend it to many, because many people say it doesn't really smell like sandalwood to them. Plus it's teeth achingly sweet. I happen to adore it though.

So, I will recommend: Santalum by Profumum. Sandalwood, myrhh and cinnamon. Straight up. Strong. A couple sprays scents me all day. Only drawback is the high price.

Favorite frags with a nice sandalwood in the base notes:

    Tiffany for Men
    Jazz/YSL
    Essence of Jerusalem

    Favorite one-note sandalwood:

    Caswell-Massey Sandalwood

C&S No. 88 offers it only very mildly to my nose. Ungaro III, the same way but focuses on it more and the sandalwood base is much more apparent there.

If you want straight sandalwood, Villoresi's is the one along with MPG's Santal Noble. Of course, both use other notes too but the sandalwood stands out as the main note.

Also Chanel Egoiste (the origianl of course). The sandalwood comes out in the base but it's strong. Until then, other wonderful notes dominate. This is one of my all time favorites--ever.

If you don't mind wearing fragrances marketted to women, Guerlain's Samsara would be it. It has a staggering amount of sandalwood oil in it (possibly the highest of any).

    LV Sandalo
    Creed Bois de Santal
    DSH Sandalo Inspiritu
Farfalla Sandalwood Aftershave balm (vintage). No kidding, it's actually the only one of these with a serious amount of mysore sandalwood - unfortunately the new version no longer has it.

Tam Dao is my favorite presentation of sandalwood. It's smooth with an almost roasted quality around the edges-- like slightly scorched espresso beans, and it puts a nice edge on the sweetness. I get a lot of compliments of Tam Dao and it's easy to wear.

Creed's Santal Imperial is another favorite. It's a bit more formal and it has a really uplifting, radiant opening that seems to be constituted of some mystery notes. I have no idea what gives it that effect. It's like citrus, but it doesn't smell like any citrus I could name. The base has a warm, smoky tonka bean finish. I find that this lasts a really long time on me.

I've heard that's good too. How much variation was there between the notes.

Congratulations, Santal Noble is one of my favorites as well.

I wore Tricorn (Caswell-Massey) the other day - I had forgotten what an excellent sandalwood fragrance it is! Please sample it whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Tiffany for Men has the most unbelievably rich sandalwood drydown.

In addition to Santal Noble and Original Santal, there's Fragonard Santal, which I happened to sample today. Fantastic.
