Yay they keep rating the frags I deem worthy of purchase 1-2 stars, I feel so original.

The same themes are carried on the update, but I suppose that it to be expected. Bond 9 is not liked, Guerlain is. I find the book very useful and I'm not someone who gets bogged down in disappointment when my opinions radically diverge from the authors' (as they frequently do).

I never read the original Guide. I need to. I did enjoy this update. Of course I didn't agree with AdG getting 4 stars but like Baldessarini and liked it at 4 stars. The only other thing I had tried was Euphoria which got 3 Stars.

    Fun read. Thanks fredricktoo!!

Guerlain got smacked around this time around.

And WHAT'S UP with Duro getting ONE star??? Also, why is there $$ next to a Benetton fragrance? Those go for $10-$20 at the local perfumania or Target or Kohls (a super cheap department store in the USA).

    Cheers,

I'm enjoying their book even more these days, and the free supplement is great, but there is one minor point, in case LT or LS happen to read this thread. The three star rating is "good," while the four star is "recommended." If something is "good" then why not recommend it? If I were them, I'd call the three star rating something like "borderline," "passable," or "fair."

The author(s) may have a soft spot for Guerlain but blind fanboys of the house they are not. Am I the only one to notice that many Guerlains got slammed (most rightfully so) in the update ?

Thanks for the link! Turin is so unpredictable. First he hated Guerlain's Nahéma and L'Heure Bleue, now he adores them. He hated Coriolan, but loves L'Âme d'un Héros. He loved Shalimar Eau Légère Parfumée, but hates Eau de Shalimar. His reviews fall close to mine, but sometimes he seems a bit too quick...

I was thinking along the same lines, Mr. Guerlain. It seems as though some of the fragrances reviewed were done so in a hasty fashion or under less-than-ideal circumstances, but to be fair, LT does mention that his first sampling of Timbuktu probably was affected by a day's worth of sampling, and he says his nose was tired. See page 336.

Great link! It made my day!

As for the reviews, I found that while some of them were made too quickly, and has a lot of personality, - they are pushing for investigating the perfume I read about.
If LT\TS missed some evident note, it does not mean that they did not smelled it - they leave it for private test. Is it nesessary to repeat evident things?

I was first introduced to Heeley at The Scent Bar here in Los Angeles. They are not easy to find. Heeley Figuier is one of the top fig fragrances I am thinking of getting to balance out my Acqua di Parma Blu Mediterraneo Fico Di Amalfi. I'm glad to hear Turin is evaluating them favorably; they deserve it.

    You're quite welcome Chris.

I sometimes wonder whether the review fits the 'fume or whether they look for a 'fume to fit a brilliant, witty and erudite review. Nah. That's way too cynical on my part.

Oh yea. on topic - Knize Ten ***** woohoo. I do remember asking LT on this board where the Knize Ten review was in the book and him relating that it couldn't be gotten by them. There are a lot of 6.5 oz bottles of splash and spray EDT on the web. I'm going to pull the trigger when my client pays me.

Thank you very much, boy Though there aren't too many frags from the list I know, generally it's a joy in itself to read comments on them. I found the new Mousson from Hermes terrible at first trying, but after more thorough investigation I think it's quite good, and yes, it deserves the four stars.

    LOL yea.

As for Guerlain Insolence EDP...I don't get it. Its a train wreck, a mishmash of wild synthetic notes pounding the 100 year old guerlinade accord so hard that it becomes a whimpery shadow of itself. It feels like Maurice Roucel mocking the house of Guerlain after its recent fall from perfuming grace ..

Personally, I felt most of the Duro ratings were spot on - I consider none of them FBW.

Dior Homme Sport: described as dull but still manages to get 4 stars. Eh?!

Guerlain Homme: "... both [the fragrance and bottle] are derivative." 4 stars?! However, I do agree that the bottle design is a complete rip-off of Dior Homme.

It's very difficult to rate something as suggestive as fragrance preference and have it be universally accepted. In regard to purely being well made, well executed fragrances within their respective genres, I tend to often agree with Turin's 4 and 5 star ratings. Sometimes not though. I think, unlike most people who have posted on it on Basenotes so far, Turin got Guerlain Homme right. To my nose the one in his book that he definitely got wrong is Beyond Paradise for Men. I think it's just a bad perfume. There are a lot of mediocre perfumes out there and many fewer bad ones. This one is horrid IMO.

I don't really care what a frag gets rated, as long as the criteria is explicit. LT talks about distinctiveness, radiance, and a connection to natural smells, for example. With chypres, he talks about balance and abstraction. I wish he would have had a specific section in the first part of the book where he explains his criteria in a more systematic way and with examples of "good" and "bad" frags. However, after reading the book from cover to cover, the reader does get a good idea about how he is assessing frags. In the case of Polo Double Black, though, he doesn't say whether he thinks it deserves a low rating because it is something of a copycat or simply because, as he says, too many people he encounters are wearing it. Nobody is perfect, obviously.

Overall, it struck me that they (mostly LT) spent more time and energy writing the reviews in the update than in the book proper. I suspect this is a result of them having more time, energy and focus. Percentage wise, there doesn't seem to be nearly as many "throw-away" reviews as in the book.

    Definitely worth the download.

I love what they said about Amazing Grace - my thoughts exactly. So inoffensive it was offensive. And the twee little sayings on their products. Yuck.
"It's now very common to hear people say "I'm rather offended by that." As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well so fucking what." - Stephen Fry

I had the same impression. But then 1450 reviews were far more than they had intended to write for the book. And although they certainly gave their best already then, a few reviews appeared to be rushed. Cut them out and you still have more than the thousand reviews promised, and worth reading.
Double Black and a few others got the three lines they deserved, and I am still not interested why exactly those ratings were so low. The one star for Tabac Blond, a $$$$ -perfume, and a favorite of many, left a mark though. But I suppose this was exactly their intent, and I accept it as that. From several interviews following the book release in America I had the impression that they were perhaps a little exhausted, Luca in particular. And of course there was a marriage, too. I am more relaxed myself now, and had I given The Guide three or four stars in June I would have to mark that up now. ( Just signed up for the subscription. Does anybody know what it will cost?)

@ MaisonStinky - how about sending them a couple of Montale samples at my expense? After an ordinary Tom Ford oudh reviewed in The Guide, and Amouage's Homage now they really shouldn't ignore Montale ouds any longer !

Don't worry, the last Lutens they blasted (Mandarine-Mandarin) is perhaps my favorite in the line. You always have the privilege to disagree - even with the Grand Pooh-Bah!

Actually, there are many instances in the original book where the prose comments are at odds with the star ratings. I've chalked it up to sloppy editing, but perhaps Turin and Sanchez are just habitually inconsistent.

I agree with Chandler Burr's appraisal of Mousson- I've tried it 5 times now and every time I try it, I judge it to be fouler than the last. It's my only Ellena scrubber.
I'm curious about Cabaret (Gres) and Serge Noire, however, and also the new Insolence. I didn't like the old Insolence, nail polish remover summed it up.
Glad to see Heeley getting good press, all the ones I've tried have been delightful.
I wonder what LT/TS are going to charge for future installments??

Me too! I think it's well done, although there is something a bit odd about it. I think I'll buy a bottle.

Curious about Serge Noir. I haven't liked the newer SL's at all, but the notes for Serge N. look good on paper.

Will definitely check The Guide updates.
