    Default The elusive Belgravia...found!

In a recent thread on impossible-to-find perfumes I listed Dukes of Pall Mall Belgravia. You may recall that even the mysterious and well-connected naed_nitram, making a rare appearance on the forum to voice his appreciation of Dukes of Pall Mall Cotswold, noted he had never seen a bottle of this mythical stuff.

Well, apparently Fortuna saw me helping an old lady across the street, or something, for out of the blue a bottle of Belgravia EdC appeared on ebay.uk and I bought it. It's on the way to me now bythe kind interlocution of hirch_duckfinder and I am one excited perfumista. Details will follow!

That is fantastic! Congratulations on the only good news I've heard today.

You MUST report back after you've tried it. I recall you mentioning this in a few threads.
I had never heard of it until you're mention. I hope it lives up to expectations.

If you haven't already noticed - I have a manic fixation on Dukes of Pall Mall I came across Cotswold Aftershave accidentally at an online discounter and having always had a weakness for the old-fashioned English gentleman spiel (hey, where else can you wear hand tailored suits and take high tea while being a dedicated socialist and having really smutty sex ) and it really floored me. Luca Turin would die of boredom, but I was entranced with this citrus-floral thing and I became obsessed about finding the EdC version, which I ultimately did, and which was indeed even better (thank you ebay.uk!!!). So when I discovered there was another scent from this long-perished house - Cotswold being the "weekend at the country cottage" scent, Belgravia the "urban cosmopolitan" one, well, I had to have it. Kicked myself for having missed an auction of Belgravia AS and had given up hope. Now, the bottle I acquired is from the late period of the house when a guy in Middlesex bought the license. The Cotswold from that era was actually quite different from the original, but I'm hoping the best for Belgravia. I should be getting it today or tomorrow.

So, it has arrived. And what is it like?

Very trad. Whereas Cotswold is a fresh citrus-floral, this is a dry chypre: peppery, soapy-clove, smoky-spicy-mossy, with a touch of floral hidden somewhere way back, perhaps, but absolutely no sweetness. It reminds me somewhat of Trumper's Eucris (minus the fruit), which I actually did not like upon first spray, but revisited recently with much better impressions. I'd like to get the aftershave of this as well (oh will he never have enough )-. No, actually I am really happy to have this among by beloved bottles. I'll wear it side to side with Eucris and explore it some more in the next couple of days.

Are we talking about Cotswold, as in the perfumer behind No. 88 by Czech & Speake, Cotswold??

    Very cool.
I would have never guessed the profile at all. I still consider Eucris pretty cutting edge, especially for a British house.
Do you find yourself getting the longevity of Eucris? That would equal surprise #2!

I doubt DoPM Cotswold has anything to do with John Stephen's Cotswold Perfumery. The Cotswolds is a region west of Oxford known for its particular "Englishness" and synonymously used with country (gentry) life - that makes it a popular name for products wishing to evoke that association.

I have an empty bottle of this product and have tried over the years to purchase another, but to no avail. I saved the bottle, which I purchased in London back in 1985, to use as a reference in replacing it. Since I couldn't find it in the shops on either side of the pond, I searched for it on the internet and found this site.

The scent was unique and pleasant, which is why I continue to search for it. I assume that it is no longer manufactured.

Since I can no longer find Dukes of Pall Mall Belgravia, I use Czech & Speake No 88, which is wonderful but different. If anyone knows if Belgravia is still produced, please inform. Thanks!
