Default Full Bottles you regret buying...

As a newbie perfumista, the conventional wisdom is never to buy a full bottle of a perfume you think you like during this most formative period of your training. Wait a year, sniff a zillion samples, and then and only then, dip your credit card in the water and buy a FB or two.

But instead of heeding this good advice, within a week of the onset of perfume mania I was frenziedly bidding on Ebay and cruising the aisles of Boots etc looking for my next FB hit.

So I thought it might be cathartic and instructional for us to open those drawers, let out a deep sigh, and admit to our bad buys. None of these will be scrubbers - or at least one would hope our judgement is not quite so off kilter! - but these FB mistakes will just somehow be wrong...

So here then is my list of FBs I regret buying this year:

L'Artisan L'Ete en Douce (Luca Turin, you were absolutely spot on with this one, or rather "spot off", for this truly is "laundry-soap-on-steroids"!)

    Jasper Conran Mistress (terminally tacky)

Jo Malone Vintage Gardenia (the 153 wasps clinging to the spray nozzle in a state of drunken euphoria should have been a clue)

Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom & Honey (canned peachs in syrup - wasps' dessert)

CK Euphoria (sexy but sickly - the wasps might get quite high on this one as well, actually)

Hugo Boss Femme (just too pink - it was only £15 in Asda but still.)

Tesco Fig, Almond and Cassis EDT (bit synthetic, and only £3.99 in Tesco! But hey, that is two reams of copier paper.)

And ones I am wobbling over slightly...

    SJP Lovely (twee musk fest)

EL Private Collection (galbanum pain barrier, but I am working on it!)

I detested L'Ete en Douce in the sample vial, so that one never made my wishlist. I have purchased or swapped for bottles that I ended up reswapping (Rosine Rose d'Ete for one, and Kenzo Parfum d'Ete. Hmm, do I spot a trend here?) I don't really regret having full bottles of them and then offloading however. Sometimes you can't really get to know a fragrance until you spray it from the bottle.

I'm surprised you hate Jo Malone's nectarine blossom! I bought it not realizing it was for women, ended up loving it, and spray it on my pillows and short daily. I bought it about two weeks ago and it's missing about 15% already.

    My regrets:
    -Original Vetiver from Perfumebay.com (120$)
-Original Vetiver from Neiman Marcus (255$)
    -Original Vetiver from Ogilvi (300$)
DON'T ASK WHY I BOUGHT IT THREE TIMES. And yes, I regretted it as soon as I received it, each time.

    -Hanae Mori for men, EDP
    -Ambre Canelle from Creed

    And finally...

    Drum rolll...

No really, you really need a drum roll here....

Issey Miyake. After a few days of wearing it, it made me very nauseous. It seriously made me want to throw up every time I wore it. I quickly gave it away to a family member. What's funny is when my family member wore it, it smelled really good on him. Go figure!

I regret getting Vanilia the L´Artisan one. I mostly bought it because vanilla scents do so well on me, and it does..it´s just a bit boring. Good but dull.

Clinique Aromatics Elixir. Which, thankfully, was only $18.

Fortunately, I found a better use for it - Litter-box area deodorizer.

The cats loved it. And it smells much nicer (relatively) as a room spray than on me.

Before we had a computer, before Basenotes:

I bought Dior Lily at Saks after wearing it for an hour. I thought I'd worn it long enough to judge it, but I hadn't. Not the kind of muguet note I'm partial to; it was too earthy for me. That bottle went in the trash.

At Marshall's I saw Un Amour de Patou and thought, How can I go wrong with Patou? Well, that one was all wrong for me! I hung onto it a long time (nice looking bottle) but in the end, the trash claimed it.

Clinique Wrappings smelled great-- but it was 1993 or so, and it was only available in full strength perfume form in a spray bottle. (What brilliant person decided a spray was the way to go with such a concentrated scent?) Longevity? That monster lasted 17 hours on me. Very linear. A 17 hour headache. In the trash.

There have been several since then that aren't great but aren't awful either. All bought unsniffed-- not a good idea for me, but occasionally when I can't find a sample locally I buy online. I wear these occasionally and reason that maybe I'll come to like them more....maybe.

Well, if you manage to get through your L'Ete en Douce by Xmas, I have an Irish friend who lives in Toronto coming over for a visit, who could take my bottle back with her - I only just bought it and it could do with a loving home!

PS Glad you like my alias - I must say I find it most cathartic - and it helps to orient fellow members in discussions of taste!

Vent Vert - out and out BAD!

Beyond Paradise - Turin's raving made me do it...never again.

L'Artisan's Mandarin Tout Simplement - love this frag, but strangely enough - never wanted to wear it!

L'Eau de L'Artisan - bought too quickly after reading a review on NST, now I think it's too harsh, just exactly as LT described it.

SL Miel de Bois - loved the sample, bought it, and quickly realized I would never be comfortable wearing it in public.

L'Artisan Premier Figuier Extreme- A very early purchase that was made on impulse. I like it okay and still wear it occasionally, but I don't think it was really FBW. I much prefer Jo Malone's Dark Amber and Ginger Lily, but didn't buy a bottle of it, and now I can't find it for sale anywhere.

I am with you on the L'Eau d'Artisan...now L'Eau de Jatamansi I would dearly love a bottle of.

I have the JM Kohdo Day and Night (100ml and 30ml respectively), both bought on Ebay for the very reason you describe, and only after many failed attempts, such is their popularity!

Bulgari Voile de Jasmin - I bought it with the Eau Parfumee Au The Blanc (which I still love), because the salesperson said that she wore the two together sometimes. It's fine - I do like it with the The Blanc - but I'm now sure that I could have found a much better jasmine soliflore if I had waited.

Most of the FB mistakes were bought unsniffed, or I got in trades unsniffed based on descriptions.

I didn't need White Shoulders. I use plenty of 50+ sunscreen and have my own, thank you very much.

Only one so far, and luckily it's a small bottle... I'm 'thirding' L'Eau de L'Artisan. One time I wore it and something in the scent reminded me of pickle juice! I have no idea where that came from, but I haven't been able to wear it since.

Shalimar parfum- at retail. I'm an idiot.
I accept now that Shalimar is a fragrance to be admired from afar. I cannot wear it in any formulation. I give up.

    I regret purchasing:

*Ineke Balmy Days and Sundays. I like it, but its not really FB worthy.
*212 Sexy. Nice but no 'wow' factor and I never reach for it.
*TM Innocent. I like Innocent Illusion soooo much better
*John Varvatos Woman. Its gathering dust
*Burberry Summer. Nice but I have so many that are similar so this one is gathering dust too.

this is why I have made a firm and steadfast rule to never buy unless I have tired three times....

Boucheron pour homme drove home that decision..

My new rule (which I haven't been entirely successful in sticking to) is that I not only must try the perfume, but I must use the entire sample before considering a full bottle purchase. Too many times I've sampled something and thought that I really liked it, but only been 1/4 - 1/2 through the sample. Shortly after buying a bottle I realized I'd have done better to save my money.

Currently I'm working my way through a sample of Ormonde Jayne's Ta'If and it's a contender for FBW status....

I need to be swept off my feet before buying a FB or it is something where I think ' not bad' and then somehow finish a sample within a week..or better be scared I might finish a sample. And I have to be sure there isn't a perfume out there that is very close to the one I want, cheaper and still good and charming. ( For the bond numbers that last criteria is usually the final blow)

If some of you ladies want to swap any disasters for mine, let me know

    Lauder 'Pleasures' light-weight and boring.
'Grey Flannel' curiousity got the best of me. What's all the hype for? Light soap.
'Amirage' before BN. At first sniff it's intriguing. After 20 min you want to scrub your skin off. I know now the pitfalls of mimosa.
Guerlain 'Insolence' Why they make stuff like this is beyond me. Bought un-sniffed. Serves me right. Scared me off purple juice forever.
Oscar de la Renta 'Voluptuous' Also unsniffed. Yikes!
Gres 'Cabaret' You had better like it sweet.

At first I thought I bought way too much (~4oz each) of the Grey Flannel and Kenzoair...

Grey Flannel is a BEAUTIFUL drydown and has become a comfort scent for me but I have been discovering so many perfumes lately that I don't think I'll be wearing this at all in the next few months/years . Luckily I think the grey flannel juice will last long enough if kept in the dark.

Same with Kenzoair, I loved this scent at first but it's grown boring now... I have discovered a ton more anise/licorice type scents that have done it better and excite me more when I wear it... plus whenever I wear it it does weird things to my stomach... making me think I'm hungry in a non-appealing way.

I would totally offload or decant these but it seems they're too accessible at retail price to garner any demand from me.

Definitely Helmut Lang EDC...oh god, it smells like baby puke. Actually, it smells like something that makes me want to puke babies. I thought it would be right up my alley...subliminal musk sorta deal. Eek!

2nd would be Caron's Violette Precieuse. Do you ever buy things just because they're rare? Why do I feel the need to do that? It's SO not me.

I regret buying a number of bottles because they were rated highly by The Guide. Those bottles are: Rive Gauche & Calandre. To a lesser degree Y by YSL, although I didn't purchase a large bottle of that one.
Bottles I purchased all by myself & regretted are Kenzo Summer, CL's Tumulte Pour Femme (I love the Pour Homme) & Chanel #5 in parfum. The parfum just doesn't last on me, oddly enough, whereas the edt does just fine.
