I agree. I've always liked vintage watches. I've not owned a LCD/LED watch since I was a teen in the 80s.

I am wondering if the numerals might have been touched up. Does the coating on them look like the original coating? I have not seen this model Rolex before and can't compare it with anything but it was a question that came up in my mind.

The luminous dials from the 40s were hand-painted, so even identical watches had slightly different paint jobs.

My father asked for some casual watch for his birthday. I came up with this.

I'd love to hear your ideas for some casual but preferably traditional watch for around 1000EUR.
Nothing that runs on battery though.

I really like the date feature on that Oris watch. Very cool. in shorter months how does it advance to the first of the month?

While on vacation this summer I found this 1948 Bulova in an antique store, very reasonably priced because it was broken. A local jeweler was able to fix it and now it's fine. Hard to tell the size from the photo; it's a men's dress watch but, I think, also very suitable for a woman.

Unfortunately it's not a perpetual calendar so for 28, 29 and 30 days long months it has to be done manually.

I love the ornaments on your watch. Too fancy for most men nowadays. Also the rectangular shape is not as popular with men's watches nowadays.

Nothing wrong with manual advancement. I like having something to do on an automatic watch. Makes the wearer feel useful!

Thanks. It was the designs on the side that attracted me too.

Great classic pieces, Fiveoaks Bouquet and Pallas Athena, wonderful timeless design with just the right hint of retro chic, plus also from two manufacturing companies each with a longstanding history of quality movements/mechanisms

I bought an inexpensive double watch winder. If I don't wear my Rolex for a couple of days, or just for about a day and a half, it loses time or stops. I've had many automatic watches and that's just part of the deal.

Any suggestions on what brand watches I should look at for a gift? Nothing as fancy as what you guys have, but something sub $500 or even sub $400 would be nice. Looking for a gift for my dad.

You need to look at Tissot and Christopher Ward in that range, IMHO. I gave each of my parents one of my Tissot watches this summer, and both were very pleased.

I am not familiar with Christopher Ward but seconding Tissot. Some very beautiful "clean" styling and good watches. Another brand could be Seiko. I like mechanical watches, have worn both brands and they are both very accurate, reliable and smart looking.

I believe you can find some nice Atlantic watches in the given price range.
