So I'm not much into watches. My most expensive is a $150 Kennth Cole watch. I've decided to upgrade to a watch with a budget under $1000. So I'm thinking of getting this watch. The Movado 800 Sub Series. I can get it for $995 minus 25% off.

Do some looking around, you could do alot better for around 1000. There are alot of eta 7750's around in that bracket.

Work watches should have a few defining characteristics if you want the best bang for your buck:

    -Sapphire Crystal (helps prevent scratching)
-Swiss Movement (slightly more precise than Japanese quartz movements)
-Leather or titanium band (steel can be VERY heavy and annoying for daily wear)

    Things to avoid:
    -Rubber band
    -Digital components to face
    -Overly huge faces
-Gold colored (this is more subjective but gold is generally harder to pair with clothes and is considered "old man"-ish)

The best watches for work, in my opinion, are made by Tissot. High quality, Swiss-made watches in attractive and classic designs but without the insane price tags of the more highly marketed brands like Tag.

What I'm saying is, a quartz watch is fine. But it would seem crazy to spend that much on a quartz, when for the same money you could have an automatic chronograph(eta 7750)

Thanks brenster. I understand that much of it. What I meant was it doesn't help me decide what I should buy. I am just starting to learn about the different movements. Also what do you think of buying from grey marke sites? I see they are much cheaper but also people have had a lot of problems with them also. Particularly I'm looking into jomashop.com which seems to have fairly good reviews.

Ah, ok I see what your saying now. What type of watch are you looking for? dressy, diver sport, swiss, japanese ect. As for grey market, I wouldn't hesitate to but from jomashop. They have a pretty good rep and great deals. If you look on Ebay, there is a seller named Timeparadise and he is a good grey market dealer that I have personal experience with.

Looking for something classy, stainless steel band, black face, has the date, not too big (I have skinny arms), and probably Swiss or equivalent. Something I can wear to work every day. I'm a psychiatrist at a hospital.
I'd like to learn what all the fuss is about regarding ETA, etc.

Cool, have you found Watchuseek yet? I may have mentioned this site before on the thread somewhere. it's a great place to learn about everything watches. You will find something you like there. About Eta, As far as I know they don't actually make there own complete watches. But they are with very few exceptions what you'll find in a Swiss watch when an in house movement isn't used. The reason they are used is because they are a solid, quality movement, and I would assume also the cost associated with developing an in house movement.

Check out a company called "redline" they make really modern, sturdy, tactical style watches. Mine cost me new $150 and I love it everyday when I wear it!

Going on a year with no issues!

Redline is to watches what comme des garçons is to niche perfumery...IMHO of course!

Thank you Hedonist, I have others but I seldom wear them preferring to switch between those two.

    Edit:

That's not true I do use a pocket watch as well but didn't think people would be interested.

I bought a Raymond Weil Maestro a couple days ago. Got a good deal on it. (under $1000 down from $1450) It's a nice entry level automatic with classy looks. It's no Patek Phillipe, and will not hold its value because RW has only been around since 76 or so, but I just fell in love with the watch. I'll be saving for an IWC Portuguese now.

I'm not a watch collector and I don't own any legitimately fantastic time pieces. I do however, own a Casio G Shock 2688. It's shock resistant, atomic, solar powered, water resistant to 200m and has world time zones. I'm thinking of picking up another G shock as mine has been great for the last 2 years and still looks good as new even with daily wear.

If you want to check out a great mechanical watch in the 1K to 2K price range you should check out Nomos. Fabulous. I have an Orion that is so classy it's almost ridiculous.

I'd love an IWC. Especially like that Aquatimer. The Classic Omega is great too.
Love the look of watches, but can't justify the price to myself. Then again, I'd be happy to lay out that much on a pair of speakers, but that's probably another thread.

If you have a physically active job (I do as a personal trainer/strength & conditioning specialist), G-Shock is the best I've found in over 12 years for a "sports" watch. It stands up to crazy abuse, the atomic clock and solar power are super convenient and work really well. I have the same model as the one in your picture, except mine is all black where the silver is on yours. This thing will last me forever and though on the pricier side for a sports watch, it's likely one of the best values around for it's type.

Does anybody have any experience or thoughts on Welder watches? I saw a couple that caught my eye and they've got me thinkin'. I know they look unconventional and I know they're not in league with, say an Omega, but I am curious about them. Thoughts?

I did go through a watch collecting phase and have three very nice Wenger Swiss Army watches to show for it. Every bit as high quality as the Victorinox Swiss Army but for substantially less money. Both are genuine makers of Swiss Army, having contracts with the Swiss Army, but Victorinox is larger and more well publicized in the US.

They actually have a unique style and like you said there unconventional. They do have a few that caught my eye. But I'm not a big fan of rubber straps.
