Thank you SMM for doing this great research. I love it!
Thread: SotW October 25th-31st, 2008
Welcome to Week 35 Colognoisseurs and Perfumistas, it was a big week. This was the highest posting week ever with 1,292 posts. 716 different scents named, just two off the all-time high. 464 of those scents were mentioned just once for an individuality index of 35.9%, The individuality index ties the all-time low from Week 14. The pattern of total posts over 1,200 but individuality indexes below 37% continues. We’ve been over 1,200 posts three times and each time the individuality index drops well below the 40% average.
The big 5 houses had pretty good weeks led by Guerlain with 98 wears over 33 scents led by the week’s #1 scent Vetiver with 20 wears. This is the first top 10 in a while where no other Guerlain joins Vetiver. Serge Lutens was second in wears with 56 and scents worn at 21. Chergui was the most worn Serge Lutens with 6 wears. Chanel had 43 wears over 20 scents, led by 7 wears of Egoiste in a tie for #10. Creed also had 43 wears but over 17 scents. Bois du Portugal was the leader with 9 wears good enough for a tie for 5th. Finally, Hermes bounces back from the miserable week 34 with 32 wears over 13 scents led by the week’s #2 Terre D’Hermes with 12 wears. The big 5 totals were 272 (21.1%) wears over 104 (14.5%) scents.
In other houses L’Artisan had its biggest week ever posting an all-time high of 46 wears. Tea for Two tied for #3 with 11 wears. What is impressive about these numbers is it was fueled mostly by women’s wears at about a 3:1 rate. There were a couple of comments about whether the women have an effect on the stats since they usually make up about a third of the posts in a given week. Besides showing how much they can affect a single house as they did last week with L’Artisan. Chanel, Serge Lutens, and Guerlain are almost always fueled by the ladies almost 1:1 in wears and in many weeks for Chanel or Serge Lutens there are slightly more female wears than male wears. Also of the 15 scents in the top 10 this week there are three that are there on almost exclusive female wears, L’Artisan Tea for Two, Ava Luxe Love’s True Bluish Light, Prada Infusion D’Iris. Two others Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain and CDG Avignon got almost half their wears from the ladies, as well. So ladies if you’re feeling like you aren’t influencing things here are the numbers which show how much you are influencing things.
Christian Dior had a big week logging 37 wears. 12 of them coming from Dior Homme which is the other scent in third. Comme des Garcons bounced back to its average of the summer after three pretty down weeks. Avignon in the group tied for 10th is the house leader. Yves St. Laurent posted 40 wears, Rive Gauche pour Homme tied for fifth with 9 wears. This is a lower percentage of Yves St. Laurent wears represented by Rive Gauche pour Homme indicating a more balanced wear pattern for the house this week. Prada had a good week as two Pradas are in the group tied in tenth with seven wears. Prada Amber pour Homme was worn almost exclusively by the guys and Prada Infusion D’Iris almost exclusively by the women. Prada Infusion D”Homme was three wears back with four. Ralph Lauren had another up week even though Polo Modern Reserve posted half the wears it did last week. There seemed to be more general wears of the Polo scents in general this week. This might be due to all of the talk about Polo Modern Reserve on the boards and it encouraged some members to get their Polo on. The only two houses which had significant dips from their averages were Armani and Parfumerie Generale.
The remaining scents in the top 10 are Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain at #5, Ava Luxe Love’s True Bluish Light and Czech & Speake #88 tied for #8.Burberry London for Men and Tom Ford Extreme finish off the group tied at tenth.
Here now the top 10 for October 25th-31st, 2008
1.) Guerlain Vetiver 20 wears (1.5%)
2.) Hermes Terre D’Hermes 12 wears (0.9%)
3.) Dior Homme 11 wears (0.8%)
3.) L’Artisan Tea for Two 11 wears (0.8%)
5.) Creed Bois du Portugal 9 wears (0.7%)
5.) Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain 9 wears (0.7%)
5.) Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme 9 wears (0.7%)
8.) Ava Luxe Love’s True Bluish Light 8 wears (0.6%)
8.) Czech & Speake #88 8 wears (0.6%)
10.) Burberry London for Men 7 wears (0.5%)
10.) Comme des Garcons Avignon (0.5%)
10.) Chanel Egoiste 7 wears (0.5%)
10.) Prada Amber pour Homme 7 wears (0.5%)
10.) Prada Infusion D’Iris 7 wears (0.5%)
10.) Tom Ford Extreme 7 wears (0.5%)
There were eleven scents in the just missed category. A couple of L’Artisans Dzing and Timbuktu along with Caron Yatagan, Montale Black Aoud, Creed Himalaya, Chanel Antaeus, Serge Lutens Chergui, Guerlain Habit Rouge, and Yves St. Laurent Opium pour Homme. The other two are new scents Frederic Malle Dans Tes Bras and Versace pour Homme. Estee Lauder Private Collection Amber Ylang Ylang and Kenzo power were at five wears. At four wears Dior Homme Sport, Prada Infusion D’Homme, and Ralph Lauren Polo Modern Reserve. That wraps up the new fragrance race. Before I close out Week 35 there was one other noteworthy wear spike as two scents posted five wears literally out of nowhere this week, Aquolina Pink Sugar and Bond #9 HOT Always. It’s always interesting to me when a scent gets multiple wears seemingly out of nowhere. I wonder what caused the spike. That does make it a wrap for Week 35.
As always, you keep wearing ‘em and I’ll keep counting ‘em
Have a well-fragranced week.

Another week of fabulous number crunching. It's great to spot the trends among such a savvy crowd! SMM, you're a rock!

Very interesting stuff. Nice to see TdH and Hermès having a better week. L'Artisan, too! And Tom Ford Extreme! Hooray! And BdP just keeps hanging in there. I think that one must be a fall classic.
Thanks again for all the great analysis, SMM!
Thanks again, SMM! I can't wait for the year-end roundup!
