Default Scammer Alert and General marketplace advice UPDATE

Please be advised that "oilman" aka "smellgood44" and LotusKing have been identified as Basenotes scammers. We will make every effort to issue further alerts regarding any other identities used by this person and any other such scammers. Please be further advised that it is always wise to ask another to ship first if they have little or no feedback. If you have low feedback, it may be additionally wise to deal with established members first to build up your feedback to a respectable level. Although feedback is no guarantee of reliability, it is the best system currently available here as well as on Ebay.

Thanks for this info, Stu. Can I also add that typically this scammer ALSO asks in the swap that you DON'T send it with confirmation or signature confirmation? This would require him to sign for it, which would implicate him obviously in mail fraud.

Instead, he'll ask you, "Please don't send with signature confirmation. I'm at work during the day and so won't be able to pick it up. The mailman will leave it at my house, so I don't need the confirmation."

Be careful! He's very tricky and sounds very interested... but he's just trying to steal from you! Be wary if a swapper asks you to send it without any confirmation/proof or keeps asking you if you've "sent the package yet" while he doesn't provide any evidence that he's sent your end.

Not that this isn't good advice, but I'd say it's appropriate advice for shipping within your country, not shipping internationally. Internationally the cost of delivery confirmation is often triple the cost without - for example, your usual 100ml or 50ml perfume bottle costs about $4-5 to ship from the USA to Canada without delivery confirmation, via First Class Mail. If you want it sent with delivery confirmation, you have to send it Priority which starts at $15. From France it's even worse - 7-10 Euros with no confirmation, 25+ with confirmation!

Just curious if there has been any news about the scammer? Did anybody's efforts ever bear fruit? Did he get caught? Has anybody else been scammed?

If you set your time period at the bottom of the page for 75 days you will get maximum accuracy in the marketplace.

francois- At the bottom of the marketplace boards it allows you to set the time period you want to access. I fully purged the out-of-date threads and posts going back 75 days, so that time period will produce the most accurate results.

That's the "maximum accuracy" part I didn't understand.
You mean that threads older than 75 days are likely to be completed outdated or plain wrong I guess.
Your post was somewhat laconic as to why you posted it.
(you didn't state your had purged older threads)

    Thanks!

That's right! Since most members would consider marketplace listings older than 75 days to be somewhat if not totally outdated, using that as a guideline is best.

For future reference, dear readers, this is completely false. USPS Deliver Confirmation does not require a signature, it's merely scanned when it's received and when it goes out for delivery, no signature is ever required. If someone tries this tactic with you they're looking to steal from you and your best bet is to cut your losses (time in correspondence) and stop negotiating the transaction.

I think you can get either a DC# or do a signature required. If a person tells you that a DC# is some sort of problem, yes, that's a huge hint that there is a possible swaplift in progress. I always have the person send first if he/she has little or no feedback. Why would anyone do otherwise?

If you are selling, you can require insurance, so that if he/she claims that it wasn't received you get your money, correct?

giannis- is no longer permitted to make offers in the marketplace. Despite making an effort to correct a number of bad deals, several deals were not corrected.

    He has now been banned.

gretzky17 has been contacting members about expensive swaps. It is easier to scam someone this way rather than with purchases as no upfront payment is due. He has already failed to ship or respond to some members. He has been banned.
