To be honest, I really don't know what all the fuss is about - Sean John's career has heavily relied on blatant plagarism, period. Artistically, he's a talentless (but rich) twat. However, he does have great business acumen.

It's the people who buy his s**t (retail) who should be lynched...

Basenoters claim that Creeds smell different from one batch to the next, so how the heck can you copy something that changes?

I'm ROTFLMAO. Almost every post here is bashing Diddy, mostly for his image. Guess what? His "image" has gotten him 2 pages and counting on the forum for his new scent. You can't ask for better advertising. And sorry anyone who claims he is "talentless" needs to go learn something about music. I don't like his post Biggie work, he can't rap or sing or play an instrument but try to produce an album people. You need music talent to match beats, synch sound levels, graph EQ etc. The man is hella talented. Man those bitchassness levels are code red. Unforgiveable.

After 74 comments, only 3 people have mentioned the actual scent. 2 of them do not believe it smells like smw. This has certainly been Illustrative. Creed has never received heat for copying OV and Hinalaya...Ok maybe he has

I'm looking forward to smelling this. About 6 months ago, my impatience got the better of me & I missed out on a 4 oz. bottle of SMW (blind) by bidding too early and causing a price-war.

Will be good to get an idea of whether the frag I missed out on was gold or dishwater.

well i did get a chance to visit Macys yesterday on way home

I have to say I really hate Macys SA

Extremely pushy, first off I asked her to spray it on my wrists, she sprays it all the way up like on the underside of my forearm, about 2 sprays, and then she asks me what I think, I am like well I need to give it some time to drydown, she goes you only need to give it a minute, I am like no I need to give it more time, at that point she goes if you buy the small bottle for $57 you even gat a sean john bag whoope doo...at that point I told her I will walk around.

Anyway because of the way she sprayed it on my arm it was very hard to smell it without me looking like a retard LOL

What I will says mostly what I got out of it was lime, that is really what I smelled but it was very light, and only seemed to last for maybe 4 hours or so.

to be honest I need to give it another wearing before giving a good honest opinion either way

hmm, i'll go down to the macys sometime this week to see if they have it.

I don't think my macys will have it though.

    Is SA = sales agent?

if so, at all the macy's i've been to, none of them have ever tried to push a sale onto me

So, yesterday I went to Macys, it was a holiday so OF COURSE it was packed to the brim, that is except for the men's fragrance department (why is that?). I start perusing the smellies and immediately get hit up by an SA, and even quicker I snap back with the just looking line. She seems to not have a problem and I continue looking. A couple minutes later an SA with a french accent comes up to me, and very brutishly asks if I want to smell something new and very sexy. I know there is nothing she can show me that is going to wow me and theres almost no shot of her showing me anything I haven't already smelled but I just don't have the balls to tell her off, so I'm like fine. The woman was honestly the worst SA I have ever met. She drags me over to the Pi Neo and sprays it and shoves it in my face and goes " it's very good, it's from france" and that was it, she just left. She really had no way of knowing that I knew more than the common shopper but the fact that she would treat customers as idiots is really annoying. Your probably wondering why, I have just posted a rant about the poor Macy's SAs in a topic about Sean Johns new fragrance, I don't really have an answer for that, so I will neatly rap up my comment with adding that not only were the SAs rude, when asked about I Am King they looked at me like I had just murdered an infant. So 0-1, no I am King for me and, this proves the point why I refuse to give my money to Macys.

Macys has declined to pure ghetto status. Target is more high end (that isn't all that much of an exaggeration sadly). I usually wait for mass market scents to ht Sephora since the pain of dealing with SAs isn't worth the majority of desinger junk that comes out. The Sephora SAs aren't pushy and 8 out of 10 times are balls to the wall (or floor) hot so they can be as annoying as they want I'll just hit on them.

A comment noted lime in the scent. I wonder if Diddy borrowed from another entrepreneur, Parfums Llewellyn, for this scent.

    Cheers,
    Al

just thought i give everyone an update stopped by a different Macys..and this one a lot nicer outside of NYC

anyway they had samples so i got one also I got to spray it myself and sprayed it 3 times directly on the back of my hand

I can tell you this it does not smell like SMW from what i remember, though I wish I had SMW right now to compare

Truthfully it seems to be a very linear scent and does not change much at all even during the drydown all i keep getting is lime that is it...it is not a bad scent but nothing to wow me over at all

but I need to try out the sample more

I'm getting AdG - at least on the citrus/aqua accord. The drydown is totally different, but the overall evaporation profile is a light scent very much like AdG. Maybe just a bit stronger on the base.

I'm not ready to buy a bottle, but I won't rule it out. It's nowhere close to a scrubber, nor is it a revolution. To my nose, it's a competently done designer light aquatic with the right stuff for broad commercial appeal. It falls in the same group as AdG and Estee Lauder Pleasures for Men. Light and inoffensive stuff that the wife will buy.

Also, if it does have a chance against AdG (), it will be because of somebody's market savvy. The very knowledgeable SA said that she is seeing weakness in AdG sales for the first time ever, and thinks it could even fall out of number one, although she can't think of what would take its place. She thinks that unless things pick up, or the last-minute rush shoppers are grabbing AdG by reflex, then a new leader could emerge. Shudder. I noted huge displays for both AdG and IAK. AdG's features a lot of AdG. IAK's features a lot of....Diddy! Whatever - let the games begin!

PS: Here is the blurb from fragrantica...

The perfume opens with aromas of tangerine juice, orange, cranberry and Imperial French berry note. The heart incorporates accords of Kir Royal cocktail; cremee de cassis, premium champagne and cooling Mediterranean aquatic notes. The base notes introduce scents of key lime pie, lemon cream, rich labdanum extract, cedar, vetiver, white moss, sandalwood essence and clean powdery undertones.
Clearly it was inspired by a night on Diddy's yacht.

Today I successfully sampled this fragrance at Macy's. I definitely agree that there is a lot of lime in it upon application. Unfortunately, it doesn't last very long on me. I sprayed it once on each forearm and once on each side of my neck about 2 hours ago. It's barely detectable now. I have to put my nose right up to my skin to smell it.

It does smell vaguely familiar to me, but since it's been awhile since I've smelled SMW, I can't do an accurate or informed comparison. That being said, once the lime goes away, the weak dry down reminds me of what I remember SMW to smell like. But in that respect I'd say the new "Adidas Dare" is more similar to SMW than this (which is not to say Dare is an exact copy).

It's not bad, but I won't be buying it. If it were stronger on me I'd consider it, but weak sillage and poor longevity are two of my biggest pet peeves.

    Tested...
nothing like SMW or VIW, not even close.
It is basically 95% Boss Pure with extra lime and a less generic base.
Go test both if you think I'm bullsh!tting.

But why rip off Boss Pure ?
    WTF
Does Sean Combs like Tangerine bubble gum that much ?

That's the best description I've seen yet. And frankly, I like the Boss scent better.

I think it's pure marketing. This is a total mass market frag. I'd much rather see the Didster ripping off Tom Ford with some power scents, but it ain't gonna happen.

I just tried it out tonight, and as has been said before me anyone worried about a SMW ripooff is fine because it smells absolutely nothing like it. It smells...disgusting. At first I got a weird grape soda accord in the topnotes and then it dried down to.... Amouage Arcus? I am really quite shocked at how similar the two are, obviously I am King is a horribly synthetic rehash of it, but nonetheless the similarities are striking. Oh and thankfully the longevity is down right abysmal.

I tried this one yesterday and you know what it actually isnt bad. Yes a little citrusy but very clean and uplifting. Leave Diddy alone. He is actually very good at making products people actually buy. and even though his music used samples of earlier works, you have to admit when a diddy song came on in the club you were out of your seat dancing your ass off. That, and hes a lot richer than most of us here so he must have done something right. I am king is at best a nice fresh effervescent fragrance . I think that was the idea. and its flawlessly executed.

I really did not want to post this here but it seems like this is the official* I am King thread.

I think it is a very well executed fragrance, even more so than hes previous fragrances. It is well balanced, but fleeting. Definitely an improvement over most Armanis, Hugos, Lacostes, Ed Hardy, Guess, etc, etc, etc. I will not buy it, but teenagers can do a lot worse.

*Ok to all of you posting 'official' threads, unless you have written authorisation from the manufacturer, the thread is not official.

I'd rate I am king well above Arcus (that Kool-aid colored overpriced Ck Escape), the closest thing I can compare it to is Nightflight. Still, I would expect this is could be more popular among fraternity guys than the average raper...

This smells pretty good but not better than Unforgivable IMO...and definitely nowhere close to smelling like SMW...
They've had it at Macy's here in MD now for about a week now.
    Go smell it and see...

I am not denying the man's business genius, I am as big of a hip-hop fan as your gonna find, so in that regard I dislike many of the trends that he either started or helped continue. I will always thank him for Biggie though About the scent, it wasn't anything horrible, really, but it was SO boring, and just did not sit well with me at all. I hated Amaouge Arcus when I tried it because of all the fruit I was getting out of it, and IAK smelled almost identical to my nose, so I obviously didn't like it either. Your right though he does know how to make products that will sell, and come this time next year it will be a top seller most likely. That doesn't mean I have to wear it though.

Please do! Have you tried Arcus before, because apparently so far everyone disagrees with me. I hate being crazy. But never before have I gotten such a connection between to frags as much as this time. One thing I can be sure of, there is a ton of fruit in it.

And I have some news to tell you about I Am King... it's not selling well, either.

The local Macy's has sold only three or four bottles of the stuff, despite a massive "king-size" display. Don't blame the recession... stalwarts ike Acqua di Gio, Fuel for Life, Light Blue Pour Homme, L'eau d'Issey Pour Homme, and Euphoria Men (including the Intense, which the Coty rep says they "can't keep in stock") are all doing extremely well.

And nationally, it isn't doing well, either... Unlike what Lauder wanted it to do by now, it hasn't broken into the #1 or #2 spots in the US... Light Blue Pour Homme and Acqua di Gio still hold those spots. (I heard that from a L'Oreal rep, who was pushing AdG, and feels that AdG's slip to #2 was a motivator to make him sell more AdG.) Somehow, I just don't think that it will be another smash hit like Unforgivable...

You have to be crazy to think this smells like Silver Mountain Water. I just tried this one today and it smells nothing like SMW. Very much grapefruit to start - I actually kind of like it into the drydown...Very clean feel to it.

I laugh at people who bash Sean John for making 'similar' colognes.. Like NO OTHER fragrance designer has every copied or used other scents as inspiration. I feel the reason behind this hatred, is the simple fact he is a black hip-hop star.
I have: Davidoff Relax, Dior Homme Sport, Boss Selection, Azzaro Visit, and Creed MI (will provide # on bottle for verification) available.

Looking for the following: DG The One, Himalaya, YSL L'Homme, John Varvatos (not vintage) Canali For Men or Paypal.

This is a joke right? The fact that he is a black hip-hop artists has nothing, I repeat, nothing to do with his bashing. The scent he created, Unforgivable, was a deliberate copy of what he himself adimitted to being a favorite scent. It really is irrelavent whether or not other fragrance designers have copied other fragrances. For the most part they use various ideas, themes, etc and change something or improve on something and if they don't they are generally lambasted for it. I'm offened that you would even insinuate that the people on this board are hating on a frag because the person behind it is a "black hip-hop star". Get that s*** out of here.

I finally got to try this.

Whoever was saying it smells like Silver Mountain Water needs to reevaluate. It doesn't.

In fact, I was astonished to find that it didn't really remind me of anything else in particular...at the time anyway.

He IS definitely the king of the ripoff artists, but unfortunately for me (since I love to hate him), this isn't a Creed ripoff.

For now, yes, it is a Macy's exclusive. However, it will be in much wider distribution (Sephora, Dillard's, Ulta, etc.) come March.

Scentronic man, I'm about to cross into the realm of sounding like a broken record, but I know you've smelt Arcus. This didn't remind you of it at all? It smelt to me like a myriad, of over-ripe fruit, the same smell as Arcus. I think I'm just going crazy.

    I sampled "I AM King".

It stinks. Literally and actually. I had to scrub it off the back of my hand withing a few minutes. Nasty stuff. Rotting fruit with some kind of decaying flesh animalic note. Clingy and nasty. Had me looking for the forensic jar of wintergreen or Vicks Vaporub to smear under my nostrils.

Maybe he's trying to make an EDT form of each creed perfume so we dont have to spen 150 per bottle. that said, he shouldnt have done it because it just goes to show that no one can be original anymore... but oliver creed...

I went to Macy's to try out a few colognes the other day. I almost didn't want to like it because I know EVERYONE will be wearing it soon but to my (novice to the fragrance world mind you) nose I Am King stood out more than anything there and I think it was a good buy. I also think I'm going to buy unforgivable because they threw a sample of it in there and it's great. Sorry guys but the ladies don't care if it's Sean John or Creed as long as it smells good. Give the man credit for knowing how to do business. And anyone that thinks a song that takes samples from other songs is artistically inferior needs to go back to.... what, the early 90s? (I assume that's what you guys are talking about when you say diddy has never made anything original.)

Additionally, after smelling SMW for myself I can say that it smells nothing like I Am King. If you're gonna accuse someone of copying a fragrance at least choose a fragrance that it actually smells close to (Unforgivable and MI for instance). What a stupid thread.
