    (2008)

    Top Notes: Incense, Labdanum, Styrax
    Middle Notes: Benzoin, Iris
    Base Notes: Vanilla, Russian Leather
Rather strong on the birch tar (Russian leather) note at first, but then this dries down to reveal a more ambery scent. The incense, labdanum, and styrax in the top combine to give an assertive oriental impression. Though the leather predominates for quite aawhile, it only finally disappears quite late in the drydown. Powdery benzoin and iris soften, but do not overwhelm it. In fact, for a scent containing such a definite powdery heart, it hardly comes across as powdery at all. I have to say, though, that this fragrance, while quite lovely, is overall a very close approximation of Guerlain Cuir Beluga. This is not very apparent at first, but as the development progresses it becomes unmistakable; so I would say if you have Cuir Beluga, you may not need this one at all.

After several days in heavy-breathing florals and gourmandy exotics, today's

is such a refreshing change. All greeny and awash in verbena and lime. I can see the joggers and the miniature sailboats in the boatpond and hear the clip clop of the carriage horses even as I write....I don't do well with greens but this one works rully well on my temperamental bod.

Many thanks to UBU for choosing this for me!!

Carven Homme, which I got a few days ago for real cheap and have been enjoying very much. I'd say it has something in common with Heritage in the opening and something in common with the last bit of Muscs Kublai Kahn in the drydown. Really good stuff at any price but esp. at less that $20 for 50ml.
Also, I've got rose geranium essential oil on one wrist and labdanum on the other. And I'm going through the database thinking about those notes in relation to the frags I know of which they're a part.
Great SOTD list today. I enjoy how both the list and individual members alternate between something expensive or intended for a limited audience and something available for next to nothing at any drugstore. Thanks and cheers to you all!
Edit: I just noticed that this post bears the number that was the runner up for the Number of the Beast. All hail 555, a nearly eerie number fraught with its own sort of near-occult significance.
