Question Frag for a Frag Hater

Ok, so heres the deal. My dad is anti-fragrance, to say the least. He does not approve of my hobby, he thinks that colognes are girly, etc. etc. etc. He thinks that women think that the smell of a clean man with fresh sweat is sexy and that fragrances started out for women and now the industry is trying to feminize men. Now so that the intro is out of the way, I wanna convert him. I wanna prove to him that there is more to this art than smelling "girly". I want an overly masculine scent, that would be easy for him to appreciate. Something that can prove that you can smell like a "man" and still smell good. What would you guys suggest I get to try to convert the unconvertable?

Parfums de Nicolai New York. It's classy, masculine, and refined.

There are plenty that would work great like H.O.T. Always, Baie de Genievre, C/S No. 88, etc but I think New York would definitely be something that someone who thinks all perfume is girly would enjoy.

Anything from CB I Hate Perfumes is perfect. Cedarwood Tea or In The Library would be "anti-girly".

Or just get him some Secretions Maqnifique and dare him to find any girly qualities to it.

That's a good idea, I've been wanting to sample it myself, so I guess its a win/win.

I don't really want to drown him before he knows how to swim, so to say. I want it to be something that he could easily approach, and I'm just not so sure that something like CB would be a good place to start him out on but definitely thanks for the idea! [/QUOTE]

While, yes, that would cure him of his "all frags are girly" stance, I still need to be around him! I don't think I want to submit myself to that much pain.

Or you could go for the comical angle and get him L'Antimatiere.

Granted, if you can smell it (I can, and it's STRONG, but it seems most can't) it's amazing.

Otherwise, I'd got with Yatagan, Salvador Dali PH, or Route du Vetiver.

Lets think about this for a minute. A fragrance for someone who doesn't like fragrances, or something they will like, and actually use, and appreciate. Hmmmm!

Fahrenheit might be worth considering too. You can't get much farther away from feminine than gasoline notes!

I'm sorry that my post may have left a little grey area there, but I'm not talking about an "antif-frag" more of something so unabashadly masculine and beautiful that it will convince someone who, sees all that smells good to be non-masculine, to think twice about the industry as a whole. Those were my initial hopes. I will be going to Neiman Marcus soon and hope to get him to try Vintage Tabarome and Royal English Leather, theres no way he could think those were feminine.

    Yatagan gets another vote.

Does he use scented soap or body wash? You could get him the body wash version of a fragrance (Rive Gauche has one, for example) and tell him a few weeks later that there is a EDT version of it too.

No, he really is just not into the whole scented anything. He prefers to just smell clean, and will use what ever my mother buys. I think he like Irish Spring soap though.

Clean, huh? Mugler Cologne or Original Vetiver.

Or Patrick from Fragrances of Ireland for Irish Spring!

Any of the Gendarme fragrances, especially V.

Let me just say, coming from when I never wore fragrances and when I first started this hobby, I didn't like Rive Gauche one bit.

The smell of cigarette/cigar smoke is generaly considered masculin. Very Valentino Pour Homme (silver box), Vintage Tabarome or Davidoff Zino would do the trick.
I myself wouldn't use Royal English Leather for this purpose. It can be cloying and is not so much masculin.

Curious - my mother always said Fahrenheit was much too feminine for a man and, although I love it, I still don't think of it as a very masculine scent.

My suggestions for the thread originator would be something like Lagerfeld Classic, Dunhill Edition or Pierre Cardin.

Either something undeniably masculine like Aramis, a gentlemanly EdC like Monsieur de Givenchy, or an environmental fragrance like Anat Fritz. When was he 16? Maybe try to get that in a bottle.

Aramis and Guerlain Vetiver - are both masculine (non-girly), traditional, and clean/soapy smelling.
