I can't believe no one's said A*Men yet. I can see Havana, but to my nose, Havana is just so pleasant that it doesn't really "overpower"--I go willingly, so to speak But A*Men, that's a battle that I fight and lose.

I think that's because A*Men is strong for a long time. It's not just the top notes !

You think so? I find the drydown to be strong, sure, but not overpowering like the opening. Alternatively, it could be the the whole fragrance is strong, but I just find the opening to be terrible and the drydown pleasant.

Actually, I don't find much in A*Men's top notes. I have to wait a while. It may be because I blow on the area sprayed, and that may have different effects on different frags.

Creed Tabarome Millesime - the ginger is too strong for the first 30 minutes, but the dry down is amazing.

YSL Live Jazz - I really don't like the cilantro that sticks around for the first 30 minutes, but from there to the finish it's yummy citrus, cedar, and ambergris goodness.

LV Vetiver, Starts out a bit too strong and peppery for my tastes, but after 15 minutes it cools off and is amazing.

Mont Blanc Exceptionnel - very strong spicy beginning, though I wouldn't call it bad at all. Then it settles to a very nice drydown.

Fumidus, the smoke in the opening is almost too much to bear but after 25-30minutes it settles down into a something that is very nice.

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Montale Patchouli Leaves. It's loud Givenchy Gentleman-esque opening throws me off, completely. I do enjoy the drydown, though

    I don't like Serge Noire's camphory-cinnamony opening as much as I adore it's drydown.

A*MEN is strong to be sure and it did pop into mind for this but I have to agree with others that a) The opening is not substantially different from the drydown, and b) it is consistently strong.

I also considered Hammam Bouquet because there is a such a difference from opening to drydown but I enjoy the opening as well. I do agree that it may be offensive to some though. If they can get through whatever they don't like, they'll certainly be rewarded with that smooth and calming drydown.

Agreed. The ginger is overpowering at first, but the dry down is solid.

I must be one of the few here who actually loves Givenchy Gentleman's opening. It's so red-raw and confrontational that it becomes memorable instead of anonying. There's Bad loud (Bulgari Blu) and there's Good loud - and GG is the latter.

I think Bois du Portugal is more potent in the opening than I would like, but the dry down is super.

On my skin, Terre d'Hermes smells like someone rubbed an orange all over me until it drys down. The dry down is delightful though, I just have to put it on an hour before I go out.

Caron Pour un Homme! - Top lavender note punches hard without gloves. Settles down after a bit into a beautiful vanilla drydown. Still one of my favourites.

Caron Yatagan? - An experience for the uninitiated. The way the eponymous sword must have seemed to those on the bad side of Janissaries. The curved swords, painful though they must have felt, sent some to heaven.

Aramis. The opening is like sucking on a Deer Rifle. The drydown is a much more enjoyable experience. A rather simple concoction, but I can see why it has lasted.

Grey Flannel provokes sneezes on me the first ten minutes, then settles down into something warm and lovely.

Quorum was described as 'crotch in a bottle' by a basenoter......and I agree. However, 30 minutes into it there's a warm, dry fragrance that's very comforting to me.

Jacomo de Jacomo is a spice bomb that stings my eyes, but settles into something smooth and lovely.

I also agree with those mentioning The Dreamer

Canoe (EDT) starts with a sickening slap of musty barbershop on my skin, and then settles down to a smooth vanilla that I adore.
