    Default SotW January 3rd-9th, 2009

Its week 45 here at SotW and the first full week of 2009. It was a week where a number of forces flexed their muscles and dominated the top 10. We’ll get to that after the raw numbers. 1,180 total posts representing 691 different scents, 57 of these posted for the first time. 481 were worn one time for an individuality index of 40.7%. As expected now that the holidays are over the numbers were up across the board. Total wears were the highest they’ve been in four weeks, number of scents and single wears the highest in five weeks. The individuality index pushes north of 40% for the first time in seven weeks. Eleven scents in the top 10 this week and some surprising regulars missing.
The big 5 were led, as usual, by Guerlain with 114 wears over 33 scents. Shalimar was the House leader with 12 wears good for a tie for #3. Three other Guerlains were also in the top 10, Heritage at #6, Habit Rouge and Attrape Coeur in a tie for #8. The big surprise is no Vetiver in the top 10 for the first time in 21 weeks. This week’s second House is Chanel which is continuing its very strong winter with 68 wears over 24 scents led by Egoiste at #7 and followed by Coromandel at #8. Third House is Serge Lutens which had 45 wears over 21 scents. Three scents led the House in Ambre Sultan, Chergui and Serge Noir all tied for #26. Creed had less wears at 43 but more scents at 24. Bois du Portugal had its lowest week in nine weeks and while still the House leader was only at #26, too. Hermes is in its usual fifth place but with a bigger week than in the last few with 33 wears over 11 scents led by the week’s #2 scent, Terre D’Hermes, making a return to its former position of glory. The big 5 totals were 303 (25.7%) wears over 113 (16.4%) scents. A very impressive week for the big 5.
Even so one of the non-big 5 also flexed its muscle and had an amazing week of 51 wears over 14 scents. That House was Yves St. Laurent which placed two scents in the tie for #3 with M7 and Rive Gauche pour Homme. Rive Gauche pour Homme has had an interesting three weeks of 10 wears in week 43, 0 wears in Week 44, and 13 wears in week 45. If you add Yves St. Laurent’s numbers to the big 5 you get 354 (30.0%) wears over 127 (18.4%) scents. Six Houses were responsible for almost one in every three wears this week. Three Houses; Guerlain, Chanel, and Yves St. Laurent, hold eight of the 11 spots in the top 10. Yes these six Houses flexed their well-fragranced pecs and dominated the top 10 this week. What is surprising is that usually you would think the other two members of the top 10 would be scents like Dior Homme but that ended up at #20 while Christian Dior only had 19 wears over 8 scents. You might think L’Artisan would be there but it could only muster 20 wears over 14 scents with only two scents Dzing! and Timbuktu posting three wears. Montale has put scents in the top 10, but not this week with only 19 wears over 14 scents and Aoud Rose Petals the leader with three wears. Caron also posted a low week of 20 wears over 10 scents led by Tabac Blond with only four wears.
By now you’re thinking it must be Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain but that scent had its third week outside of the top 10 with seven wears. No as I said at the beginning this was a muscle flexing week and the most powerful force in the stats decided to flex their strength again as the ladies decided which scent would be the number one scent of the week as they wore Annayake Miyako into the #1 spot. Every time the ladies have decided they want to place a scent at the top, they do, and this week is no different. The guys well they are less successful as they tried to place Alt-Innsbruck Cologne into the top 10 but they didn’t come close missing by two wears from making the top 10 and 12 big wears behind Miyako. When it comes to getting things into the top 10 the ladies are the muscle and the guys are the 90-pound weaklings. The remaining scent is the last scent tied for #8 and the top new scent for the week Versace pour Homme.
    Top 10 for January 3rd- 9th, 2009
    1.) Annayake Miyako 18 wears (1.5%)
    2.) Hermes Terre D’Hermes 15 wears (1.3%)
    3.) Guerlain Shalimar 12 wears (1.0%)
    3.) Yves St. Laurent M7 12 wears (1.0%)
3.) Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche pour Homme 12 wears (1.0%)
    6.) Guerlain Heritage 10 wears (0.8%)
    7.) Chanel Egoiste 9 wears (0.8%)
    8.) Chanel Coromandel 8 wears (0.7%)
    8.) Guerlain Attrape Coeur 8 wears (0.7%)
    8.) Guerlain Habit Rouge 8 wears (0.7%)
    8.) Versace pour Homme 8 wears (0.7%)

There were 8 scents in the just missed and half of those were from the same three houses which dominated the top 10 with two more Guerlains in Homme and Vetiver, one more Chanel in Coco, and one more Yves St. Laurent in Opium pour Homme. The remaining four scents in the just missed group are; Bvlgari Black, Montana Parfum D’Homme (red box), Thierry Mugler Cologne, and Tauer L’Air du Desert Marocain. Guerlain Homme was the second most worn new scent.
That’s it for Week 45 Basenotes Nation a good week for the powers that be.
As always, you keep wearing ‘em and I’ll keep counting ‘em.
    Have a well-fragranced week.
