Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

To my mind this is one of the most wearable of all amber fragrances, not too cloying sweet, not too "over the top" spicy, just perfect amber goodness!

An incredible mix of green and woody aromas, with a touch of florals, leather, oakmoss and patchouli. This would qualify as a chypre based on notes, but it's unlike any other chypre I've ever smelled. The mix of green and woody notes is unique to my nose. This is a fragrance that would really shine in cold weather, having enough projection to radiate from the skin without the aid of of warm air temperatures, but it can be worn well in cool weather as well, adjusting the application. Quite a coup for Dominique Preyssas, about whom I unfortunately know very little, except that she designed Le Dandy for d'Orsay, Talisman for Balenciaga, and a couple of men's scents for Jaguar. Definitely worth a sniff if you don't already know it.

From a very generous decant from Roberto. I'm fascinated and a little frightened by the power and audacity of this brew, sort of like getting together for drinks with certain wild old girlfriends. I'm really looking forward to the ride with this one. No pun intended. We'll see who wears whom. It's great to be excited by a fragrance.
The ladies are celebrating the Parfumerie Generale creative force by wearing PG today.
I'm joining in and getting into the spirit and wishing Pierre Guillaume a Happy Birthday and celebrating in another of the samples ComDiva hooked me up with:
Parfumerie Generale L'Ombre Fauve
There are times I want to be a fly on the wall when perfumers are coming up with the name for their creations. Many of them give you insight into the scent you are about to put on. Then there are scents like L'Ombre Fauve. L'Ombre Fauve translates to Bestial Shadow. I don't know what kind of picture that calls up in your mind's eye but with that name I'm thinking an animalic, deep, dark scent. BZZZZT! Wrong! Thanks for playing, maybe next time. The note list is deceptively simple; amber, musk, woods, incense, and patchouli. The result of this is not so simple. The top leads off with a very light amber and incense and is beautifully subtle. The amber is sweet to complement the sweeteness of the incense. The amber changes character almost completely in the heart as it becomes a less sweet, more dry and ethereal amber; as the sandalwood holds court. Finally the amber once again turns into a deeper note, which contains the edgier quality that some people describe as medicinal that amber sometimes gets, which complements the patchouli present in the base. The note list says musk but I'm having a hard time picking it up. With a scent named L'Ombre Fauve I'd expect the musk to be way more prominent instead of having to send a search party out to find it on my skin. This scent feels opulent on me and lush. If I was going to name this I would call it "Study in Amber" because on me it presents three distinct faces of amber through the progression and I want to linger over each one.
Have a Tip Top Thursday everyone.

Happy, happy birthday, Pierre Guillaume!!!
In honor of PG's birthday, I'm wearing Parfumerie Generale L'eau Guerriere, and tonight will revel in the absolutely beautiful Querelle.
L'eau Guerriere is described in its marketing materials as a powerhouse, but on me, L'eG is extremely close to the skin and subtle. I was expecting a BIG, earthy Ghengis Khan sort of warrior fragrance, and instead got a much lighter, cerebral Sun Tzu military strategist scent. Sillage (and possibly longevity) issues notwithstanding, I find L'eG extremely enjoyable -- tending classically masculine but with some interesting twists to keep it from descending to mundane. Rats, another one for the wishlist. Hey, it's not listed among the PG fragrances yet!
Parfumerie Generale Private Collection: L'eau Guerriere notes: Cinchona bark, sky aldehydes, olibanum, aloe wood, musk.
Parfumerie Generale Private Collection: Querelle notes: Citrus, Iranian black caraway, myrrh, cinnamon, Haitian vetiver, incense, oakmoss, ambergris.
