Default BMM09: Prediction Contest / Peanut Gallery

While I haven't determined any prizes outside of bragging rights, it's only sporting to have a predictions thread/contest. Points normally go like this:

    Round 1: 1 point (Max: 32)
    Round 2: 2 points (Max: 32)
    Round 3: 4 points (Max: 32)
    Round 4: 8 points (Max: 32)
    Round 5: 16 points (Max: 32)
Correctly Predict Winner: 32 points (Max: 32)
    Maximum Points Possible: 192

...and whoever has the most points wins. My predictions look like this:

I know, the winner is a huge shock. There are a few near toss-ups, like the nearly inevitable Dior Homme vs. M7 in Round 2.

If you want to play in the predictions, you can take this blank bracket and print it and mail it to me (PM me for address), you can edit it in the image editing program of your choice and put it on imageshack/photobucket/flickr/et cetera, or you can make a text list of winners in an easy-to-follow format. You'll want to do this as soon as possible because you will be deducted 4 points * the number of days into the tournament we are * the number of rounds into the tournament we are. So if you don't turn it in until Day 4, you'll have twelve points come off your total at the end.

Cash pools are likely out for security reasons.

If you have any questions just let me know.

This will also be the main thread for discussion of the prior day's winners and upcoming matchups that have been decided. I'd like to keep that out of the next day's threads and somewhere where it can be viewed in one big thread for posterity.

I do not think HTF fragrances are going to win over fragrances that are more popular. Not generally at least.

Not predictions so much as the ones I would personally choose:

With different matchups, I could easily see Azzaro pour Homme, Antaeus, Guerlain Vetiver or even Kouros taking the championship.

Some of my picks had tough 1st or 2nd round battles, then had clear sailing for the next few rounds.

(I am on a smaller screen at work. If this is too large, please let me know.)

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

I agree with you, the more mainstream scent of any given pair is going to have an advantage.

Alright, I've got everyone's full picks in my spreadsheet so keeping track of points will be really easy. Interestingly, 10 of the 65 picks have been unanimous thus far (and 3 of the 10 have involved Guerlain Vetiver). In addition, another 20 of the 65 had only one person voting opposite of the crowd.

And despite the stats, only 3 of a possible 15 picks have been completely unique, meaning every user picked a different winner in 3 of the games.

Hurry up and get your picks in, I'll be glad to add you to the list and track your points with everyone elses.

Okay, well I am sad that my favorite scent at the moment lost - Gucci pour Homme. . Downer !!

And Fahrenheit loses to the cult classic Cuiron ? Wow, maybe Diors are really more popular than I want to believe.

Fahrenheit didn't lose to Cuiron, Fahrenheit beat Cuiron.

My bad, I think I meant Cuiron lost...which surprises me. It seems like it gets a lot of love on Basenotes compared to Fahrenhiet. Maybe it is because it is hard to find and discontinued.

Its too bad about Gucci pour Homme.

    Scores:
    5 Bluesoul
    5 Mystery H
    3 SirSlarty
    6 TwoRoads
    6 jrd4t
    5 dpak

So the list for today is...

    (2) Terre d'Hermes vs. (15) Bulgari pour Homme Extreme
    (6) Scent Intense vs. (11) Creed Bois du Portugal
    (8) Chanel Pour Monsieur Concentrée vs. (9) Guerlain Derby
    (4) Tabac Blond vs. (13) MPG Santal Noble

I think the first two will likely be two of the most unmitigated ass-whoopings of the tournament. The other big ass-whoopings don't happen until the Day 8 games.

I noticed a thread earlier about Dior Homme vs. TdH and it's funny, that's actually SirSlarty's championship game so if it comes down to that, aside from him being a better prognosticator than the rest of us, we'll also have some data to forecast the outcome with.

Also, this is the first set of games that really has the potential to bust some brackets, I have the winner in three of the four of these games going all the way to the Elite 8, and one of the three to the Final 4.

I should have entered the contest

I'm happy AdG lost, that flowery "aquatic" that smells gross and makes me feel odd. Thank goodness, it might make the $75 I spent on it redeemed.

Too bad about John Varvatos. Heavy competition I guess.

There's still time, there would be a penalty of 8 points if you got your picks in today or 12 if tomorrow but you can enter at any time.

Right now me and Mystery H are looking to go 4 for 4 in predictions on the day.

Updated Scores, Mystery H and I sweeped our picks!

    9 Bluesoul
    9 Mystery H
    5 SirSlarty
    8 TwoRoads
    9 jrd4t
    8 dpak

Today's games had the crowd largely voting identically, with the exception of the Basala/Bandit matchup which was split right down the middle. Jicky and Rive Gauche were both unanimous picks to advance and Vetiver Tonka had only one dissenter. Both other unanimous picks have won their matchups handily thus far (A*Men and TdH).

Today nobody's going to gain or lose much ground on the pack, that will probably happen with tomorrow's games which if the predictions are anything to go by will be highly competitive.

Barring any miraculous last-second heroics, I'm comfortable with giving these scores. SirSlarty and TwoRoads swept their picks and there's now a 4-way tie for 1st.

    12 Bluesoul
    12 Mystery H
    9 SirSlarty
    12 TwoRoads
    12 jrd4t
    11 dpak

Today is going to be crunch time for Mystery H as he bucked the unanimous votes not once but twice, picking Body Kouros over No. 88 and Boss Bottled over JXXV. Tournaments like these are all about making the brave plays and those were certainly brave.

    13 Mystery H
    12 SirSlarty
    15 TwoRoads

Today for me is a true tossup as I have little experience with most of the competitors. Right after I grab the lead too.

Sorry for those that wanted to get involved but think it's too late, you can still participate this year for fun or there's always next year!

Surreality's picks just arrived by mail, he was penalized for late entries but he's still very much in the hunt! These scores don't include the Carnal Flower/Eau Noire match, that will go in tomorrow's scores hopefully.

    18 Bluesoul
    14 Mystery H
    13 SirSlarty
    17 TwoRoads
    17 jrd4t
    15 dpak
    12 Surreality

Today is about a few people being lone dissenters in three different matchups, with myself taking Le Male, TwoRoads taking Ormonde Man, and jrd4t taking Philosykos. The Escada/JHL match is 5-2 Escada by the panel but I imagine it will be a much, much closer game than that. Tomorrow will likely be a snooze-fest but you may as well take the rest as Round 2 starts the next day!

Some people gained some serious ground over the past 5 games! Nobody swept all 5 but several took 4 of 5, with SirSlarty sweeping the day's games.

    21 Bluesoul
    17 Mystery H
    17 SirSlarty
    20 TwoRoads
    19 jrd4t
    19 dpak

Today will probably be all runaways with the exception of the Fumerie Turque/Antaeus game which has at least the potential to be a close one, which the others don't.

Alright, we're far enough into today's games and the leads are wide enough that I'm comfortable with calling these scores official. I manage to hang on to my one-point lead for the fourth day as round 1 ends. Today saw a whopping 5 of 7 players sweep their picks.

    25 Bluesoul
    21 Mystery H
    21 SirSlarty
    24 TwoRoads
    21 jrd4t
    23 dpak
    19 Surreality

All the Round 2 matches are worth 2 points each, and out of the 16 games the numbers of busted brackets this round looks like this:

(These are games that a round winner other than the two actual contenders was selected.)
    Bluesoul - 2
    Mystery H - 3
    SirSlarty - 6
    TwoRoads - 2
    jrd4t - 5
    dpak - 2
    Surreality - 1

Tomorrow's games (the start of Round 2) are a mixed bag; two look to be utter stompings and two look to be interesting matchups. I'm particularly interested in the A*Men/Antidote match as there may be people voting against A*Men. Tea For Two vs. Fahrenheit could also be pretty entertaining.

Well the games went pretty much opposite of what I expected and so I'm paying for it by losing the lead. Mystery H and dpak both swept their picks.

    29 Bluesoul
    29 Mystery H
    27 SirSlarty
    28 TwoRoads
    25 jrd4t
    31 dpak
    25 Surreality

Today's games are all going to be quite close, I think. The majority picks were Rive Gauche, Hinoki, GIT and Chanel PM.

Well, when you're right, you're right, today was a true set of nail-biters. TwoRoads got a free 2 points on the pack by picking L'Anarchiste, and nobody had that winner progressing to the Elite Eight. No sweeps today but jrd4t and I both went 3 for 4.

    35 Bluesoul
    33 Mystery H
    31 SirSlarty
    32 TwoRoads
    31 jrd4t
    35 dpak
    29 Surreality

Today's matchups all look to be one-sided affairs, with myself and Surreality set to sweep.

Surreality and I both swept the picks today, giving me the lead with perhaps the most hotly contested games of Round 2 to come tonight.

    43 Bluesoul
    37 Mystery H
    35 SirSlarty
    38 TwoRoads
    37 jrd4t
    39 dpak
    37 Surreality

If my brackets are going to be completely shot, it's going to be in the Havana/Kouros match. If Kouros wins I'm essentially done for the tournament. The last four games are basically going to split the competition, probably for good.

At the end of the second round, out of a possible 64 points, the scores look like so:

    47 Bluesoul
    41 Mystery H
    41 SirSlarty
    42 TwoRoads
    37 jrd4t
    43 dpak
    37 Surreality

The games in this next round are worth 4 points apiece.

Busted brackets for the round out of 8 possible:
(These numbers are the amount of games this round where a round winner other than the two actual contenders was selected.)
Bluesoul - 0 (Huzzah! Maybe I know what I'm doing after all!)
    Mystery H - 2
    SirSlarty - 2
    TwoRoads - 5
    jrd4t - 4
    dpak - 2
    surreality - 4

TdH should have it's game in hand, but I'm not sure how the RG/Antaeus match is gonna go down.

I honestly have no clue how today's games will go, I need to get at least one right to definitely keep a share of the lead. If MdM beats Chanel PM here, nobody will get points for it. Dior Homme and Habit Rouge both have two picks.

I think we're gonna have one blowout in the Ambre Sultan/L'Anarchiste match and one very, very bitter match between BdP and No. 88. It could truly go either way. The panel has it 5-3 in favor of BdP.

I had a easier time completing my NCAA bracket than my BMM. The only real toughie there was Memphis vs Mizzou, but either will fall to UConn anyway.

Taking a look at the scores, bluesoul, I'm feeling grumpy that I didn't get clever sooner and send you my picks at the start of this thing. I think I'd be doing pretty good, comparatively. L'A looks like it's going down though. That bites.

If Havana loses today I'm pretty much out of contention. Guerlain Vetiver is a unanimous pick to beat A*Men by the panel here, though the game is still statistically significant in that if A*Men pulled the upset it would hurt some of us more than others. The Havana/GIT match is split 2-2 here.

Thanks exq, but I'm not officially in it. I didn't want to bother mailing, couldn't figure out how TwoRoads made his look so spiffy and web-ready (still clueless on that), and it took about a week for me to realize I could simply take a digital picture of my printed-out and hand-written bracket and email it to bluesoul!

Better late than never though. Next year we'll rally the women sooner and keep Tabac Blond around longer!

Thanks for rubbing it in, ya lousy, stinking so-and-so!

For the record, my final four are/were BdP, TdH, L'Instant and Rive Gauche. Go TdH! Any one else care to share theirs?

BTW, bluesoul, this has been a blast - thanks for doing this! I'm already looking forward to next year's madness!

On the off chance that Green Irish Tweed or Mouchoir de Monsieur ends up winning it all we'll have proven that Basenoters suck overall at the fine art of prognostication. The other 6 all have at least one pick to win it all so odds are pretty good someone's gonna correctly predict the winner.

Since nobody picked MdM to advance the scores remained the same. Updates from the AS/GIT match:

    59 Bluesoul
    53 Mystery H

I think this one is Vetiver's game to win, but No. 88 has a pretty strong fanbase and the upset is completely possible.

If there is a fragrance that can beat Vetiver it is No 88, but given the stats for the SotHY and the GV's dominance, my money's on Vetiver.

Same here. I just realized there's literally no way I'm going to win, an_oud_girl did have her brackets done on the first day and I know that for a fact, I've been separating her scores so people's feelings wouldn't get hurt but she and I have the same picks from here on except she has Vetiver winning it all, and she's 4 points up on me. So good luck to the rest of you guys.

    67 Bluesoul
    61 Mystery H
    61 SirSlarty
    62 TwoRoads
    61 jrd4t
    55 dpak
    73 Surreality

Now, here's how the rest of the tournament plays out. The next game, between Habit Rouge and Guerlain Vetiver, will determine who wins the whole thing. Surreality's point deduction actually doesn't matter at this point, so if I were to credit him with the 8 points he had deducted upon entry and Jen still won the next match, he'd still trail her by 6.

I know that's kind of controversial, since I didn't deduct Jen any points and her entries didn't arrive until late in the tournament, but they were locked in on the first day. It boils down to whichever of the two correctly predict the GV/HR matchup was the better picker, end of story. So in my estimation, all eyes should be on Game 62 between Guerlain Vetiver and Habit Rouge to determine the BMM09 Prediction Challenge winner.

I'm too late to win this competition, but here's how I think the semis will go.

Habit Rouge will get trounced by Guerlain Vetiver.

Ambre Sultan will edge MdM, as I think more people are familiar with AS than MdM.

In the final I think GV will edge it over Ambre Sultan. There's a huge pro Guerlain lobby here, but there may be many #88 fans disgruntled over the result of the GV v #88 quarter final.

Barring a last minute comeback by Guerlain Vetiver, the finals will look like this:

(EDIT: Habit Rouge was indeed selected over GV)

    The final two, by house:
    1 - Guerlain
    1 - Serge Lutens

    by type:
    1 - Non-Niche "Designer"
    1 - Niche

I am struggling to find the right word to describe my feelings. It would be trite to say that I am 'surprised'. 'Disconcerted' is not accurate either and is much too strong of a word. 'Dismayed' and 'bemused' also don't properly capture it.

I'll just say that it is 'interesting' that neither of the final two fragrances come from the largest traditionally male fragrance families, Aromatic Fougeres and Woody Orientals.
