Thread: Lone wolf frags with no peer |
Does Vetiver Tonka have herbs, absinthe also?
They smell nothing alike even though they are both vetiver gourmand territory, and Absinthe is infinitely more eccentric, independent, and quirky.
Vetiver Tonka may have went there first, but Absinthe is clearly the Lone Wolf with no peer.
In a world where people smell bad, it is the personal responsibility of every Basenoter to improve the world one SotD at a time...
Agree with the aforementioned Yatagan and Versace's Dreamer. Would also add Versace L' Homme.
I have a few, let's see, Basala, Cristobal, Nemo. M7, Yang, Life Essence, Unleaded, Zino, and the older Burberrys for Men are all without close imitation - or at least I've yet to come across things like them. It's not rare but Bulgari Black kind of does what it does without competition or have I missed it?
what about Kouros? what out there smells like Kouros?
Montale Aoud Limes (not a huge fan) and Serge Lutens Arabie (really like) came to mind

Havana Aramis
L'air du Desert Morocain
Oddly, I'll disagree with Vibert on Eau D'Hermes - Diptyque's L'Autre is rather similar, to my nose. The rest of his list counts as mine, but I'll add...
Rasa Extreme ( MKK doesn't come close in the animal factor )
Incense Noir ( Salty and smoky... then sweet and vanilla! )
Kretek ( clove bomb like no other )
Lonestar Memories ( MEAT )
Velvet Gardenia ( Cheesy nightmare from the grave )
Dali PH - closest scent to it is Satan's sweat.

Of noble hearts, I am the noblest - and the most generous of those that yearn to give love in return. - I am a human being, I love death and I love life."
Egon Schiele - Self-Potrait
My classics: Dior Homme EdT, YSL Rive Gauche PH, Helmut Lang Cuiron, L'Occitane Neroli (vintage), Davidoff Zino, L'Occitane Eau des Baux

Couldn't you just as easily say "no peer" as in "often imitated but never equalled"?
In that case, I can add Jicky and Shalimar to the list.

Definitely Caron's L'Anarchiste and Yatagan. Nothing compares to the weirdness.
Steam Aoud by Montale is also really different. I don't particularly smell oud in it. It kind of smells like a high-class bar.
Bond No. 9's Andy Warhol Silver Factory.
also, totally agree on:
Yatagan
Absinthe
For what it's worth, I don't find Silver Factory all that far removed from Avignon, Cardinal, Penhaligon's Elixir, or the new Aedes de Venustas. If you like Silver Factory, you'll probably enjoy most of these, and if you want something a little more daring along similar lines, Dzongkha, Timbuktu, Black Tourmaline, Zagorsk, Dia for Men, and Paestum Rose are all worth sampling. Long live incense!![]()
Profumum Thundra.
As for what's similar to Kouros: Creed Orange Spice.
For my Unique Scent Offering: I haven't found anything that comes quite close to Maestrale.
Theres a niche frag in Aus called Larrikin by Mount Romance... I was amazed how similar it is to Egoiste when I first smelt it.
As for Versace Dreamer, the dry-down to me smells like a mix of le Male and D&G pour Homme.
The one I've not been able to find anything remotely similar to is Joop! Nightflight.

I was just thinking about this yesterday (having managed to get about 6ml worth of samples from Sephora). I've fallen in love with it, but I do find it slightly similar to Gucci Envy, especially for the first hour...
For me personally, Dior Homme is pretty unique, and I love it![]()
Givenchy's Insense.

Is it just me, or does Lubin's Idole share a bunch of similarities with C&S Cuba?
Guerlain's Djedi (last production in 1995-96) falls into this category.
I never smelt anything similar to Tom Ford Extreme...
I love cologne.
Antaeus, Avignon, Fleur du Male, Prada for men--love it or hate it, it is a lone wolf in my wardrobe...Lalique pour homme, Encre Noir smells too much like Gucci pour Homme and Jaisalmer's love child...

Hmm, one could argue that Ténéré is at least in the same ballpark. Unfortunately, it's hard to find opportunities for sampling Ténéré these days.
The rum, yes, but I don't get much tobacco out of Idole, nor any of Idole's black cumin out of Cuba. The drydowns seem worlds apart to me.Is it just me, or does Lubin's Idole share a bunch of similarities with C&S Cuba?
