For a Friday I am in:

    Histoires de Parfums Noir Patchouli

When your House is called History of Perfume you can already tell how high they are trying to aim. In 2005 they created three scents focused on one note. Noir Patchouli is the first of these I've tried. The top of this starts out with a roar of patchouli which is matched only slightly by some spice. I like patchouli but the top of this was so much patchouli I was worried that patchouli was all this was going to be. I needn't have worried because as we progress to the heart the patchouli pulls back and it is matched with rose and a different set of spices from the top. Here there is some pepper to add some edge to things. As we get to the base here is where this one comes alive as a leather note becomes a co-conspirator with the patchouli. This end phase lasts and lasts and is really quite evenly balanced between the two to leave this in a great place. I have read that for others the patchouli seems to disappear after the top. I didn't find that, patchouli is at its most aggressive in the top and the floral character of Noir Patchouli clearly rules the heart but it is on equal footing in the base. For me, as one who likes his patchouli you can serve it up to me "Noir" anytime.

    Have a Felicitous Friday everyone

Doesn't Histoires de Parfume translate to Stories of Perfume? I think (and I may be very wrong as my French is pretty bad bad) History of Perfume would be Histoire de Parfum.

    Yatagan (vintage) by Caron

All of this talk on the Yatagan thread got me itching to wear this sample of vintage juice. From the first initial spray, I noticed it's stronger and deeper resins and woods. I put it on after my workout at the gym this a.m. and felt a little self conscious since there were guys all around me and I knew when I sprayed it on, they would all smell it. But hey - I pulled it off!

    Thanks sloan_8013.

    decant day!

Reminiscence Paris Patchouli Elixir EdP (thanks to sloan_8013!)

For patchouli lovers! It's strong like Montale's Patchouli Leaves but smoother and richer. This is my first full wear, but when I was skin testing samples it lasted into the next day. I went with a massive over-application (@ 2.5ml) and am loving it! This is by my favorite patchouli-centric fragrance and is definitely FBW.

First time sampling Bond No. 9 H.O.T. Always

    (what a horrible name...)

First spray: Aldehydes, with a hint of carnation and other flowers (though, they're not particularly identifiable because they're fairly squashed by the aldehyde blast). There's also civet and the familiar faux-smoky-cedar of Iso E Super.

It quickly settles to its base of civet and cinnamon. The carnation is still there (barely), but it registers as spiciness more than flowers. And there's a nice, subtle suede under everything.

This is actually quite nice and the civet/suede combo doesn't end up smelling like plastic, which often happens on me.

This is definitely the most mature/classic of the Bonds I've smelled - they tend, in my opinion, to skew pretty "youthful."

Overall, I'd definitely recommend this for fans of classic, slightly feminine leather/musks, if you can get over any Bond-bashing that keeps you from trying it, but I'm not a leather/musk person, so it's not for me.

This morning was Chanel Allure Edition Blanche - in my opinion the best of the Allure fragrances.

This evening, some Lutens Musc Kublai Khan!
