Default Looking for an alternative to Vanille Galante

    Hi there
I tested Hermesscence's Vanille Galante yesterday and I really liked it, even though there are two big problems. The first one is the price, and the second is the longevity. Any suggestions ?

    Thanks

As for the price, have you considered buying one of the 15ml travel sprays? I picked one up on eBay for about $50, which was a bit pricey, but certainly the cheapest way to get any.

I can't say I know anything just like the floral/vanilla of Vanille Galante. Ava Luxe Tao is a musky, light vanilla and the extrait lasts a very long time. Again, not like VG but a floral vanilla, Helmut Lang EdC and EdP are good.

I have not smelled anything like Vanille Galante.

Smells a lot like Donna Karan Gold to me...which can be had cheaply at the discounters (EDT specifically).

    Not identical, but similar.

I couldn't agree more. Gold is perhaps a bit more amber than vanilla, but Calice Becker's floating floral/smoke accord in Gold very similar to Ellena's weird take on vanilla.

Did you make a side by side comparison?

Actually, I had a three-way comparison: Gold, Vanille Galante, and Changel Beige. I have to agree that the top notes (what some people describe as banana) between Vanille and Gold are very similar.

Does Gold have that unique aquatic note that VG has?

On my left thumb knuckle is VG and on my right DKG.
They start off very similar, yes, it could be what you are calling 'that unique aquatic note.' They are both very watery. VG has a slightly medicinal vanilla note next, DKG is heading towards floral territory, lily to be exact. VG is developing a smoke note, DKG is continuing its lily development.
So, my report says, they open very much the same, but DKG goes towards the floral and VG goes towards medicinal.
VG is already getting weaker, while DKG is getting stronger.

VG is fading and DKG is turning into a watery version of Lutens' Un Lys.

So I guess now I don't have to worry about sampling Gold, since I know I won't like it based on your descriptions Ruggles.

I think I've learned I do not like lily.

I find most lily scents have that slight aquatic vibe to them. I think they're a "cool" flower overall.

    Definitely.

I remember sampling Lily (Series 1: Leaves) by Comme des Garcons and En Passant by Frederic Malle and both of them feature that vibrant lily note, that is like nails-on-chalkboard to my nose. I want to like it. But I don't.

I'm saving my Donna Karan Gold sample to see if my mother's Easter ham can compete with it! The brining has begun, Mom.

Nice to match your fragrance to Easter dinner. I'll have to make a choice between Gold and Lys Mediterranee
