Default Online article about fragrance sales

I saw this referenced on Now Smell This:

    http://promomagazine.com/research/be...truggles-0326/

The piece of the overall article referring to fragrance is excerpted below.
I find it fascinating that Aqua di Gio is the best selling fragrance.
Not that I think its bad but just that it out ranks everything.
Does tend to reinforce how different the community taste is as compared to the overall public.

The decline in fragrance sales dropped for both genders, down 5% in womenís and 8% in menís fragrances, NPD found.

A silver lining, however, could be found in fragrance gift sets priced from $60 to under $100. These sets have become the largest part of the gift set marketórepresenting 65% of gift set sales in 2008, compared to 40% in 2005. In addition, this sweet spot has also grown in both dollars (+12%) and units (+11%) and posted double-digit growth in 2008, NPD said.

The introduction of new fragrances was pulled down overall by a 20% drop in new launches for men, however, new products for women posted a 9% gain in 2008 thanks to new brands like Viva La Juicy, Estee Lauder Sensuous, Ed Hardy, and the Harajuku Lovers collection.

NPD reported that the top five fragrance brands are:

    1.)Acqua Di Gio Pour Homme
    2.)Beautiful
    3.)Coco Mademoiselle
    4.)Light Blue
    5.)Chanel No. 5

The runaway freight train known as Acqua di Gio continues... clobbering the competiton at every angle.

Also, it's fascinating to see the job that Procter & Gamble has done with Light Blue. Basically, it went from nowhere to the #3-selling women's fragrance in the US in market share since P&G bought the license four years ago. I'm sure that P&G's massively improved distribution (compared to Euroitalia, the previous license holder) helped a lot, along with the fact that P&G is probably the best marketer in the world.

In the Top 5 list, I like #3-5. Absolutely hate the top 2. Coco Mlle is a nice modern take on Coco (and hopefully, the young ladies graduate to the older sister Coco). Light Blue is happy and fresh and I have worn it myself (it's not "me" though it's still good).
