Thread: Help me pick a classic
This weekend I'm heading down to the Fashion District in Los Angeles with my mind set on a classic. There are no lack of stores that sell many hard to find classics and discontinued fragrances by the major designers at very low prices. So, there's not much I won't be able to find.
I've smelled all of these at one time or another, but I have no bias.
I won't be deciding strictly on the vote, but since I enjoy all of these, it will weigh heavily on my decision.
PS I don't know why I did this as a multiple choice poll Please only pick one

The only easy day was yesterday
I voted for the Givenchy, but Jules and Pour un Homme would be just as good. Hurt to pick against them.
That girl, that bottle, that mattress and me.
Voted CD's Jules.
All the others are quite good and i currently own Caron pour un Homme. However, Jules is infamous for its dirtiness. Not many scents similar to it in character, IMO. That alone sets it apart as a classic.
ointments and perfume delight the heart....
Well... Voted for Pour Monsieur.
Still, it was a hard choice: to some extent, my heart rests in Moustache. M's top notes are more original than PM's, but base notes are not at all up to PM's overall accords. That is why I ended up voting for Pour Monsieur.
Do all these last on you? In my case, they just vanish an hour or so after being applied. They are akin to Eaux de Cologne...

Looks like the Chanel is running away with it.
I would have no problems with that choice.
After looking at your wardrobe, I voted for Caron's Pour un Homme. I believe everyone needs a superlative lavender classic in their 'drobe.
You really can't go wrong with ANY of them... the only thing I'd caution is that the Caron is fairly common and can be found online inexpensively, anytime. Jules, the original PM, and Mouchoir are all a bit tougher to find and more 'special'. Plus even though the Caron is a classic, let's face it's just a high quality lavender of which there are many options. Hell, buy MY bottle from my sale thread anytime, I'll sell it cheap! Then pick yourself up one of the other four options this weekend.
I'm ashamed to admit I haven't tried any of these...
Jules would be my pick if you were leaning toward animalic. Chanel for elegance.
Chanel Pour Monsieur is the best implementation of a citrus chypre in my opinion.
I would go with Jules.

They really have the Chanel original instead of the Concentree?
Simon, I'd get the Jules. So please don't buy it and PM me as to the store's exact name and location.
Santee Alley, aka Tijuana North is a madhouse on Saturdays as you well know. Things quiet a bit on Sundays-- but that's because a third of the stores are closed.
For the masochists who live in in LA (Is this redundant?) it's also the best place to score Green Ikrish Treed, direct from China, along with a repo 'gold' Rolex for $50
Simon is correct though, you can really find some gems. In my time, I've gotten Havana, Nicole Miller (when it had been discontinued) and other fun stuff.
concentree is better I think than just PM
Off-Site Decants =) (updated 05/16/12)
This is the hardest to find down there. I'm only going by a vague memory of seeing it. If I don't find it, I won't be surprised or disappointed.Simon, I'd get the Jules. So please don't buy it and PM me as to the store's exact name and location.
Last time I was there is seemed like not very many stores were closed on Sunday. Could be the economy.Santee Alley, aka Tijuana North is a madhouse on Saturdays as you well know. Things quiet a bit on Sundays-- but that's because a third of the stores are closed.
Yes, but you can also find plenty of real Creed for cheap. As far as watches, I bought a reproduction of a Panieri Marina about a 2 years ago for $70 and it keeps great time! If anyone asks, I don't hide the fact it's a fake. I'm not trying to fool anyone, I just like the way it looks. And spending 8K for a real Panieri is, well, not prudent. For the masochists who live in in LA (Is this redundant?) it's also the best place to score Green Ikrish Treed, direct from China, along with a repo 'gold' Rolex for $50
Yeah! Loads of gems. Plenty of Havana, original formula Guerlain Vetiver and others. Still haven't found any Patou though.Simon is correct though, you can really find some gems. In my time, I've gotten Havana, Nicole Miller (when it had been discontinued) and other fun stuff
I'll report back what I find.
Thanks for the input all.
I ended up buying a 2.5 oz Chanel Pour Monsieur for $32 and Caron 1.7 oz for $16. So far I like both!
Besides those I also bought a 1 oz Gurelain Vetiver (original formula) for $22. They had at least 15 more of these. Another had Guerlain Vetiver gift sets with a 1.7 oz and a shower gel for $45.
One store had a stacks of Rive Gauche 1.7 oz for $16, Rochas Lui fo $15 and Azzaro Chrome for $15. Looks like there's still plenty of deals there.
Ahh, if anyone is heading there and see's a 3.4 Azzaro Chrome for $15 pick me one up!
I am currently wearing Tiffany for men, which I applied four or five hours ago and is smelling divine. If you had it on the list I would have voted for it ahead of Pour Monsieur, simply because it has all the best elements of Pour Monsieur, but just projects better, lasts longer, and in my honest opinion smells better too.
In a world where people smell bad, it is the personal responsibility of every Basenoter to improve the world one SotD at a time...
My vote would be for Pour Monsieur.
