1. Patience. It can be tough trying to single out specific notes in a fragrance due to the subtle range each can take. Also, synthetics muddle things up further as they're often not exactly the same as their natural counterparts. Some very good advice often given on Basenotes is to purchase essential oils to study and learn the individual scents. It will take a bit of time but after you've familiarized yourself with a number of notes you'll be able to identify them more easily.
2. If you like it you like it! There's no need to be conserned about having something "younger" than yourself, in my opinion. Keep trying new scents and your tastes are sure to mature.
