    Default Manly birthday help

    Hello gentleman of basenotes

So my SO is getting more into his perfumes and he has said it several times now that he feels some of his fragrances are just too much for warmer weather. He would still like to wear perfume though. I'm hoping you guys can come up with some good suggestions for his birthday. I'm just into heavy scents and all I suggest seem to be too heavy for him in the summer.

    He likes:
    Antidote
    M7 fresh
    1725 from histoires des parfums
    Fou d' Absinthe
    Third Man

    He hates:
    Kenzo Power
Guerlain Pour Homme ( the new one)
    Vetiver Dance from Tauer perfumes
    Penhaligons ( elixir, bouquet, opus)

He is not a fan of the following notes : leather, incense, rubber, gasoline
I think his fragrance family is aromatic fougere.

So if you have any suggestions for a fragrance that is a bit lighter than the ones he has, let me know. He think m7 fresh is light enough but he isnt that charmed by it anymore. He likes Third Man and Antidote the most.

I'm not too worried about costs, but the limit is around 150 $

PS If you have any other birthday suggestions aside from perfume thats fine too
But once you get locked into a serious perfume collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

A few of my favorites for warm weather are:

    Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior
    Rive Gauche worn very lightly
    Prada Amber pour homme

If he is not against vetivers in general, I'll suggest Guerlain Vetiver and Vetiver Extraordinaire by Frederick Malle.

I think it would be advisable to discover the Carthusia house. They have a bunch of nice frags which I think easily fall into the aromatic fougere category.

I'll tell him that he's mean. I do this anyway but it's nice to have another reason

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I plan to order a bunch of samples anyway so I can order a few more. I was so surprised that he did not like Kenzo Power. He really hated it.

Well, i know i'm not as far into my scent adventures as many others on here, but my go-to summer fragrances are:

    Creed Green Irish Tweed
    Serge Lutens Chergui

The first is a very green fragrance with citrus notes that give it a bit of a pep to my nose, blossoms beautifully in the summer. The second is a spicy oriental with a bit of light floral (to my nose) that lets me sneak it into the spring/summer line-up since i love it so much. Give them a go and let me know how you liked them.

Rive Gauche sounds like it may work. I didn't like it at first, but now I'm loving it. . and its cheap! lol.

I tried Himalaya this weekend and thought it was great, but I'm not sure if it's under your budget. (ironically, a bathroom attendant at a nightspot in Chicago had it hidden behind his CK's and Armani collection!)

I instantly thought of Azzaro Pour Homme.
    GIT may work well too.
Yatagan and Polo Green are also worth considering.

Caron Pour Homme had too much lavander at the start. For that reason he doesnt like Jicky either, I think I may have to add lavander to the lists of notes although maybe if its less pronounced it may work.

Good to see so many suggestions though, and price isnt that much of a worry availability is a bit ( although I can order from any website as long as they accept creditcard and ship internationally).

I find that an Ellena is ideal for the summer. You could buy him a set of Hermessence mini's. Poivre Samarcande is very nice, and has a slight fougere feel to it. It's peppery but it's very light and fresh. I also love Paprika Brasil and Brin de Reglisse (lavender). Good luck!

if you're looking for something different Etat Libre's Elonge du Traitre (armomatic fougere) and Je Suis en Homme (citrus/woody) are options.

I am wearing HN Men by Harvey Nichols today. I know you said no leather scents but this is a softer leather like Cuiron or Daim Blond. My wife just gave me a big compliment on it. Who knows, he may like it as well.

Second or third GIT (Aromatic Fougere) and AdP Colonia (Citrus). If he's keen on Fou d'Absinthe might like Angeliques Sous La Pluie (there's a thread nearby). I'm exploring Aromatic Fougere's and have ordered Montale Fougeres Marine and MPG Garrigue to see if they work for me but can't comment yet - anyone? English Fern gets some good press - more trad, I guess. Vetiver Tonka might be worth a look . . . or Sel de Vetiver?

AdP Colonia Assoluta is a great citrus-topped fougere--it works well in hot weather, too.

A good question for you would be how far away is his birthday? In other words, do you have time to send out for samples of some of these fragrances, experiment with them, then find the best? Or is this going to be a blind buy based on member input and reviews? That could help narrow the field, maybe.

I've got time to get samples And I'm gonna go voer all the suggestions, read the reviews and base the ordering of samples on it. A few suggestions I have tried already or I have samples somewhere in the house of it, just need to get it on him when he doesnt suspect it.

Montale Fougeres Marines comes to mind. A modern fougere.

I like Acqua di Parma Colonia as a suggestion too.

Consider 1828 from HdP as well.
