Default CdeG Monocle Scent Two: Laurel

Slated for an autum release, as written up in the July 2009 issue of Monocle:

“inspired by a trip to the Bekaa Valley, it’s a fresh clean scent that has warm laurel notes. Developed by the same team that launched our Hinoki scent, it will remind regular visitors to Lebanon of the country’s hand-made Laurel soaps and fragrant gardens in Byblos”.

The accompanying picture shows the same bottle as Hinoki but with a white label and a silver cap. I can't find any other information on it yet nor pictures I can upload. If anyone else can, please post here!

I wondered when Hinoki was named 'scent one' if there really would be a Monocle series, and this answers that question. Count me among the eager.

I love laurel leaves, this could be great if they don't drown it in cedar. The smell of Lebanon is a wonderful idea, but Lebanon and cedar always go hand in hand, don't they? Hmmm.....

OMG - that's even better news!

I do love laurel. We had a laurel wreath for Christmas a few years ago, and it was amazingly good.

I hear you on the leaky bottle, ajmc. Let's NOT have a repeat on that one!

Exactly what I thought Ruggles! I also hope, on the other hand they don;t drown it into something like the laurel-reglisse coughdrop that Guerlain released some time ago...

I'm looking forward to trying it too. I think I may be one of the only people to dislike Hinoki. It's just too damn photorealistic and linear. Why do I want to smell like a fresh log? Hopefully I like this one more.

The website says In Stock, however if you try to add it to the online Shopping Cart it produces an Out Of Stock message. Glitch in their site, I'm guessing.

I think it's showing that because it's only available for pre-order. So you can continue checkout and then wait for availability.

    Woo Hoo!

I'm a huge fan of bay leaf in fragrances. An interpretation of the whole tree could be very cool. Honestly, the description and notes make it sound a little old-hat for CDG, but I don't care. Honestly, it could be nothing but bay leaf and Iso E Super and I'd probably love it...

How long until the reviews come rolling in? I've put myself on a sample-buying hiatus, so I'm counting on everyone else here for reports!

Ok, so I tried Laurel today and bought it on the spot!

Its one of those scents I couldnt imagine myself walking away from - our trips to the capital are few and far between, and there is only one stockist in THE COUNTRY currently carrying this. If I'd walked away from it before leaving Copenhagen today, I most certainly would have regretted it later. (We live 170kms from the big smoke).

I plan to write a full review on my blog soon (being as the wife has already whisked it away and put it under the tree for Xmas!), but here are some initial impressions based on the good solid wearing I had today.

First of all - a giant hit of GREEN... sharp, penetrating, but also very resinous. Sappy in fact. Coneheads will love this one (Odysseusm, Im looking at you!), as it was both cypress-like, and aleppo pine-like - I think this, in part, lent it a very exotic vibe. Of course the laurel/bay is the feature note and smells much like the dried leaves one tends to use for cooking - there are definite associations with the Mediterranean or middle-east. Some time in, and it begins to seriously prickle at the back of the nose with what I can only describe as something like "white pepper". It swings between a lovely green scent (a la Eau Campagne), and a resolutely spicy one.
I sprayed this liberally on my skin at 1pm today, and it lasted a full 9.5 hours, until I showered a short while ago. After bathing, I can still detect it strongly - though the "green" has worn off, and there is a lovely patchouli-esque residual perfume. (My first impression whilst sniffing my skin after I showered, is how it reminded me now of the lingering drydown of Rive Gauche PH).

All in all its a fragrance to be excited about. It won't appeal to everyone of course, but those who are keen to sample this I imagine will not be disappointed.
Mikeperez, I particularly look forward to hearing your take on this one.

    Thumbs up from me!

Im afraid Im not sure which "Green" (ad lib to fade) you're referring to... but it doesn't sound like anything I think Ive tried. Sorry, that's not much help, I know.
There's a puff of this "laurel/bay" accord in Hotel Costes (red bottle), if you have tried that.

Ah yes, I have tried that one mtgprox... a while back, and I do not recall it being a whole lot like this one.

If I had to break it down simply, Laurel is, for all intents and purposes, a bit like the aroma of dried bay leaves, mixed with something like L'eau Bleue d'Issey / Eau Campagne / Sisley Eau No.3.
    Kinda.
But obviously a bit more complex than that.

mtg - GGG (which I own) is sweet, fig prominent and very cedar-y. A bit like Un Jardin Mediteranee by Hermes. Dimitri's description of STL sounds nothing like GGGG.

I got my new bottle over the weekend and opened it up last night...wearing it today.

Inside the box is a little embossed note, on which is written: For our second collaboration with Comme des Garcons we wanted to capture the same smell and sensation enjoyed while staying with friends in Batroun, Lebanon. While many wonderful smells drifted through their ancient garden, it was the distinctive scent of laurel (particularly in soap form) that punctuated an early spring weekend in the eastern Mediterranean. It's warm, inviting and at times a little sharp - just like the country itself.

I have a few random thoughts, after just one wearing - I'll post more after subsequent wearings:

    - I am not familiar at all with the smell of laurel, in nature. But if it smells anything like this fragrance, I'd love to encounter it, in person. I'm wondering if the laurel is the 'white pepper' note that Dimitri mentioned above? If so, it's exquisite. No other scent, besides Hermessence Poivre Samarcande even comes close to being as realistic, smooth and polished as this. The PS is a bit leather prominent and radiant, whereas the SOL is sharper, coniferous and a bit icy.
    - It wears close. 8 sprays (chest, back of neck, arms) and it projects very little. No problem for me since this is a scent that I don't mind enjoying all by myself.
    - I smell nothing soapy
    - My atomizer doesn't leak (like Scent One: Hinoki does)!

Wow Mike... it wears close to your skin? I found a few puffs to the neck/hand kept it wafting about me for hours. A single puff on the end of my scarf is still here after 3 days.

Do you ever cook with bay leaves Mike? Once you smell these (dried ones specifically), its a scent you can't miss again (a scent every bit as distinguishable as, say, eucalyptus, for example). When I mentioned "white pepper" I was speaking more to the sensation of pepper... a sharp prickling in the nose.

I dont get any soap either. At all. But what I do get is the aleppo conifer vibe that is so often used in soaps from that region.

Thanks for posting your comments - I look forward to more when you've come to know it some more. As for me, i still have the torturous wait until Xmas eve before I can open mine.

Just go over to your spice rack and open up the jar of bay leaves, it'll save you on the airfare to Beirut!

Ah...so laurel is the same as bay leaves. I am familiar with that smell. Latins use them a lot in cooking (rice, beans, meats).

I'm actually interested to hear from any Basenoters in Lebanon - wondering if they have an olfactory association with laurel in their country (as the guys from Monocle did).

Never been to Lebanon but I have been in bay tree groves in the California Central Coast Range. If you hike into the hills from Big Sur you'll find bay trees along creeks in the valleys. Living bay leaves are less intense but have much the same smell, just moist (as you'd expect), a bit grassy, still absolutely without sweetness, very fresh, a bit pitchy almost. It's one of the best smells in the world next to the ocean and babies, imo. I don't know if it's the same species of bay or if they're native to California. But if this stuff smells like that, my wife will love it.

Amen Brother. This fragrance is straight up 'bay leaves'. For those that love bay leaves, this may be a winner, for me however, this is way to foody for me to wear on my skin. I feel as though I have rubbed bay leaves all over my chest and hands. I am a big fan of CDG, but this one is way too literal of the name of the fragrance. I almost lost my lunch thinking of wearing this one in warm weather.

I can handle some pepper in my fragrance, but too much cardamom ruined Invasion Barbare for me, too much cumin ruined Eau d'Hermes and Greyland for me, too much celery salt ruined Yatagan for me, and too much bay leaves has ruined Laurel for me. My love for these spices is when I am standing over the stove, not standing over my bathroom sink spraying them from a bottle.

Couldn't agree more. For me these foody ingredients should complement other star notes not be stars themselves.

CDG Laurel reminds me of French Lover, a lot.I also get the tingling sensation from time to time.

It just got a sample last night, thanks Mike, I couldn't wait to try it today. Wow, I don't like it. I was expecting the great outdoors, but instead got a Williams Sonoma spice bouquet.
