NEW Amouage Epic!!! Pics and Mini-review included

A new Amouage is going to be released tomorrow in Paris Gallery in Dubai called Epic. There is a big party planned for the launching tomorrow night which I was invited to. The creator of Amouage is going to be there to sign some bottles. I forget his name...something Chang. But I don't think I would be able to make it to the launching, so I talked to the manager of Paris Gallery to see if I could purchase it before the launching date; and he said I could!!!
It is based on the journey of the silk road (as I was told by the SA). Unlike Ubar, Epic is released with both gender couterparts. The "homme" was, I'm sorry to say generic, and I'm sure that a lot will disagree with me. On the other hand, the feminine was gorgeous. It is incredibly rich and dense with a mentholated note throughout the scent. I don't know any of the notes, but I suspect there is something similiar to tea-tree oil included, along with tea-like floral notes (Osmanthus?). The drydown is loaded with vanilla and is relatable to BK Taste of Heaven's drydown. But I'm on a hurry, so I'll give you a deeper insight later on. I leave you with the pics. Enjoy!!!

Any idea on when this will be released in the US or available of the Amouage website.

Also, can you expand more on the mens and what it smelled like. Thanks!

Just when I finally talked myself out of buying a bottle of Lyric Woman...

Release date? Well, I can't see this being available in the West until September, at the earliest. I hope I'm wrong...

Can you please describe the "homme" and what part of it is generic? Is it a fresh/aquatic or citrus?

As for the "femme" - mentholated and dry-down loaded with vanilla? "Just when I thought I was out.. they pull me back in!"
    Best,

Re: NEW Amouage Epic!!! Pics and Mini-review included

Sorry guys!!! I know all of you Amouage lovers have been anxious to hear more about it, but I've been away on holiday, but I'm back and have given it a few wearings.
First of all, Epic is ALL about incense...frankincense to be precise. I was very confused when I first smelt it, but after a few wearings, I came to that conclusion. When my mom smelt it, she immediatly said it smelled like Bois d'encens. Well, sort of. Epic starts out with a tea-like syrupy, smoky incense. But in a sweet way, and never cloying, even if over-applied. From a distance, its' sillage smells floral, but up close, you can really smell the incense. It is a gorgeous scent, and way better than the Homme. I'm sorry, I didn't give Homme much of a chance. I literally smelt for a minute of two then completely dismissed it as being generic (think Lyric Man). Epic never loses its sweet smokiness (from the frankincense), but becomes sweeter and more familiar as it develops. I still see a resemblance to Taste of Heaven in the drydown. But boy oh boy, does it have fantastic sillage or WHAT?! I mean I could smell it in my hallway, hours after my mom left. Oh, and the price is the same as Lyric. I just can't wait for the rest of you to try it!!!

Thanks cairomerta for the news! I've been dying to know the notes. I must say that I impressed myself. I know it may sound a little pretentious, but I was close at naming the notes. Can't wait for you guys to try it!
EDIT: Frankincense is listed in the notes at the Amouage website.

No one has mentioned the oud aspect of Epic Woman and Epic Man. The PR / marketing release, I read on Now Smell This, mentions both scents are oud based.

scent - would you say either of the scents are very oud prominent?

Mike, the oud aspect is not very prominent. I'm guessing the mentholated and slightly medicinal aspect of Epic is due to the Oud. Actually I have a 6ml of Indian oud that has that same property, albeit in a grassy, hay-like barnyard way, but nonetheless extremely camphorous.

OK, but in your 1st post above you said, '...the feminine was gorgeous. It is incredibly rich and dense with a mentholated note throughout the scent' so if the oud = mentholated, then Epic does sound oud prominent, no?

I'm saying that, to my nose, there isn't a note that smells like oud. But given that oud is listed in the notes, that's probably why there is a medicinal aspect to Epic (and probably due to the tea also). If you compare Steam Aoud (an incense aoud), to Epic, you can see my point. Steam Aoud is all about aoud, but has a incense-like effect, whereas Epic is vice versa. Also for example, Chanel 5 doesn't have any peach in its notes, but its aldehydes give it a peach-like effect. Ummm...you get my point

Re: NEW Amouage Epic!!! Pics and Mini-review included

I tried Epic Woman a couple of hours ago and also managed to score a sample.

I also smelt Epic Man and found it generic and significantly softer/weaker than its female counterpart. It's too early to comment on Epic Woman but my initial thoughts are the following:

Mentholated vibe during top and mid notes
    Tea tree oil
A sharpness deceptively akin to oud
    Fresh and green but rich
Strong (green) tea note in the opening
A subtle sweetness that becomes more apparent in the mid notes
    Quite distinctive
Doesn't smell too feminine - more unisex
    Subtle floral notes
Incense finally reveals itself during the drydown
Conjures up images of the Orient than the Middle East

Re: NEW Amouage Epic!!! Pics and Mini-review included

I tried the Epic Woman earlier this evening and pretty much concur with Trebor's comments - first impressions I do like this one and will sample again over the next few days. The whole Amouage line has just arrived here but only pre-order sample bottles at the counter so I have been heading home with one on each arm for the last few days. I tried the Epic Man last night and first impression was a definite CdG 2 Man vibe - can't be more specific than that at this stage - it takes me about 3 wearings to get a handle on a scent so will be looking in again over the weekend. I like Dia Man and Lyric Woman . . .

Epic Man gets my vote for the most watered down Amouage to date. I can hardly smell it at all. And what little I smell is gone in 10 minutes. At their prices this is unacceptable to me.

Re: NEW Amouage Epic!!! Pics and Mini-review included

I won't write a full review of either of the Epic scents until I've had a chance to spend more time with them (and they turn up in the Directory) but for what they're worth, here are my preliminary sampling notes for Epic for Man:
"There is something immediately familiar about Amouage Epic for Man. I suspect that it’s the prominent patchouli and castoreum that call to mind brash, animalic, tobacco-laced fougères like Jules, Lauder for Men, and Havana. Or perhaps it’s the geranium, spices, musk, and leather channeling brawny leather chypres like Antaeus, Aramis, and Van Cleef & Arpels pour Homme? In any case, Epic, with it’s unapologetically dark, spicy, aromatic countenance, feels like a deliberate throwback.

Of course Amouage has always had a bent for grand, ostensibly “old-fashioned” structures, starting right off the bat with Gold and Gold Men. It can even be argued that the house’s greatest lapses have occurred when it abandoned classical perfumery in pursuit of younger, trendier customers: the disappointingly bland and generic Arcus and Cirrus each being a case in point. Epic for Man continues the move back toward rich, weighty, complex – even baroque – compositions that Amouage Creative Director Christopher Chong began with the Jubilation and Lyric fragrance pairs and advanced with the recent re-release of Ubar.

Amouage calls Epic for Man a woody oriental fragrance, but in both scent and composition it’s a massive, spicy-leathery fougère. Amouage already offers a spicy fougère fragrance in its Ciel Man, but where Ciel is bright, buoyant, and chock full of lively fruit and floral notes, Epic is opaque, stern, and maybe even outright somber in expression."

    Back for more...

I just tried Epic for Woman, and I have to agree with Trebor - on first sampling, it's far more original and interesting than the men's scent. And yes, I think it's rather gender neutral as well. Green. Tea. Oudh. Geranium. Frankincense. Pepper. Something seriously animalic (the cumin?) too.

    Ormonde Woman on steroids???

I'll post full reviews once the two Epic scents show up in the Basenotes Directory. I'm trying to conserve my small samples until then, so I probably won't be wearing them again any time soon.
