Smile Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano - Bulgari Black Lite?

I just received some Santa Maria Novella Tabacco Toscano and sampled it: this stuff is so similar to Bulgari Black in the first 15 minutes! After that, while Bulgari Black retains its 'umph' in the rubber note, the rubber note in SMN Toscano subsides a bit, becoming a much lighter scent. Like L'Artisan's Dzing! without the hamster cage.

But I'm shocked! Undoubtedly the peeps at Santa Maria Novella put in a lot of hard work in Toscano, but the similarity with Bulgari Black is striking.

Maybe a niche alternative for people who adore Bulgari Black?

Yes, I agree with your observations. I stated this last year a couple of times after purchasing a bottle blind.
It was very subtle and Bulgari Black was the first thing that came to my mind as soon as I wore it one time.

Much the same could be said about the affordable Speziali Fiorentini Té Nero.

Kenzo Vintage Edition Peace (the newer release) is Bulgari Black without the rubber--same perfumer, so it is no surprise.

I thought Tobacco Toscano was discontinued?

I sampled a lot of (new) fragrances the last months, Tabacco Toscana was in my top 10, believe it or not.
The connection with Bulgari Black is definitely there, but I didn't get it before.
I guess I have to come to a conclusion between "I like this" and "I know this" somewhere in my brain ....

.... I know, like and love Bulgari Black!

Definitely not discontinued. I have seen sellers variously refer to it as Tobacco or Toscano, but my bottle came from Lafco New York and is labeled Tabacco Toscano.

It is in my top 10 as well. I didn't get the connection either until I tried them side-by-side this morning.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel both and be one traveler, long I stood and looked down one as far as I could to where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, ...... I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I -- I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. - Robert Frost

I was going to dismiss the connection until I saw so many agreements... the odd thing is that I love the SMN and didn't like the Bulgari, but its been over a year since I last tried Black and its worth trying again...

I'm in exactly the same situation. Although Tabacco Toscano isn't in my top 10, I like it a lot. The Bvlgari, I need to retry.

Yeah, funny isn't it? When you make the verbal connection first, the mind just 'snaps' in place when you sample both scents again.

I do have to say Tabacco Toscano (must be one of the most misspelled names evah) is very refined. Just more classier and a tad more subdued than Bulgari Black, which is outright provocative and kinky.

If you don't have Bulgari Black and have affection for genuine, small niche companies, by all means try Tabacco Toscano.

However, Bulgari Black was one of my first loves in perfumery, so I'll just have to see whether there is place for the Tabacco Toscano in my wardrobe.

I tried Tabacco Toscano and Bulgari Black side by side today, and finally I smelled tobacco in the SMN! It's more obvious when you compare it next to the Bulgari. It's a very, very deep tobacco that I first mistook for the rubber note in Bulgari Black.

Amazing how two different roads can lead to almost the same destination.

Tabacco Toscano is definitely the more elegant one of the two. But as Ross from Friends would say: 'She's not Rachem'.
