Thread: Hay

    Default Hay

Compiled from the Note Identification Project thread:

Hay, absolute, France, Eden Botanicals – Complex, sweet, warm, a bit salty, pungent, strong, full, thick, beautiful in a wild way. The comforting aroma of a haystack as it dries in the sun. Light undertones of what I would consider to be an “idealized” fragrance of expensive, unburned tobacco. Dark green, almost black, gooey syrup. This is a fascinating note, but powerful.

Hay: sweet, dried grass that got wet, fermented honey, nutty, salty

    How would you classify hay?
    Top, middle or base note?

Hay absolute, Eden Botanicals: Very viscous, with the absolute initially looking black but is actually a dark forest green. It also doesn't smell as initially expected - more like licorice, with great density and sharpness. Within moments, the licorice aroma transforms into something more akin to sweet dried prunes. The sharpness has now subsided by this point. It takes quite a while before it matches any previously held notions - moist dried grass, with nutty, salty and earthy undertones. However, the licorice aroma resurfaces at regular intervals. It's both warm and pungent but it's also an acquired taste.

That's a nice way to describe it.

I would say it is a Base note. Very complex, with lots of Coumarin as well as a more resinous character.
