    Default Citrus / Aldehyde C-8

From the Note Identification Project thread:

Aldehyde C-8 -hmmm. Not what I expected. Smells exactly like walking into a new house under construction. Interesting.

Octanal - or Aldehyde C-8 - is usually described like this:

Aldehydic, waxy, fatty, citrus orange with a green peely nuance.

It is very powerful and best smelt at about 1% in ethanol or another solvent.

But I found this link excellent article about itís presence in some bird secretions as well as the better known presence in oranges and thought it worth adding here.

Thanks for the link, Chris. The article is fascinating. It made me wonder about fruit eating birds such as finches and whether or not they like orange fruit for pest repellant purposes or if they simply like the sugars, or both.
