Default Guerlain for man; name best ones

Can somebody name the best cologne of Guerlain for man?

    Where to get original samples?

I'm going to go ahead and say the Vetiver (very "green" and herbal, Heritage (more classic) and the newer one, Guerlain pour Homme (sort of light and floral)

    Where in Canada are you?

Most of the time I am very proud of the Basenotes community. Time after time I have witnessed the thoughtfulness, empathy & genuine friendship that members of this community extend to others - oldtimers & newcomers alike. There are other times, however, when egos get the upper hand and civility goes out the window. My philosophy is that I won't say anything here that I would not say if you were standing in front of me. Welcome to Basenotes, each and every one of us. ~ TwoRoads

Their Vetiver has been around since 1961 and seems to pop a lot in here as one of theirs that has been popular for years and is still hanging in there. It's also easier to find than some of their men's frags (Sephora e.g.).

Habit Rouge is another of their classics, but that one is a bit of an acquired taste like scotch IMO.

I'm still a bit new in here, but I've sensed that all the Guerlains are a bit "different" than what one might think.

    Try before you buy.

Derby is my strong preference among the Guerlains made explicitly for men, but it is both costly and hard to come by. Next in my esteem is Héritage, which you should have little trouble finding in a department store with a well-stocked men's fragrance counter. Habit Rouge is a fine scent as well, though very sweet, and hence perhaps a little bit more limited in it's occasion for use. I am not a great fan of Guerlain Vetiver and prefer several other vetiver scents, including Sycomore, Givenchy's Vetyver, and Encre Noire.

Though marketed to women, I'd also recommend Mitsouko, Jicky, Shalimar, and Vol de Nuit as very comfortably wearable for men.

Many Guerlains marketed to women are perfect on men as well. Try:

    Mitsouko
    Shalimar
    Apres L'Ondee
    Chamade
    Vol de Nuit

That's a good start... a Guerlain counter ata department store will have most of these

Derby is King! I can't agree with you on Heritage, I find that it really lacks an edge and smells rather dated. Habit Rouge, yes, not for everyone, but truly a revolutionary men's fragrance of its day. All those vintage feminines certainly smell unisex these days, Shalimar is my favorite fragrance of all time. Guerlain is tops.

    My Top 4, currently:

Habit Rouge (any of them, vintage EdC is my fav.)
    L'Instant (Extreme 1st, EdT 2nd)
    Spiritueuse Double Vanille
    Mouchoir de Monsieur

I'm still exploring Guerlain with the help of some good BN friends and could certainly add more to the list.. those are just off the top of my head.

Guerlain is an excellent house. Most of their vintage scents are fairly faithful to the original formulation (only minus ingredients that that have become super-expensive or banned altogether). My favorites are Jicky EDT, which although marketed to women, is suitable for a man as well as Vetiver, Imperiale, Cedrat, and Eau de Guerlain.

I must say first that I have not tried that many Guerlains, I'd also like to echo heynow's comments about many of their Women's fragrances being perfect for Men. Here are my favorites:

    Spiritueuse Double Vanille
    Samsara (EDP)*
    Shalimar Eau Legere Parfumee
L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme (EDT)*
    Heritage (EDT)*
    Vetiver (EDT)*

    * Where my experiences are mostly limited to the current formulations and/or concentrations/versions.

If I had to name five I enjoy wearing the most, they would be:

    Derby
    Mouchoir de Monsieur
    Cologne du 68
    Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune
    Coriolan

I'm not a big fan of Vetiver or Heritage; I feel they have been done better elsewhere.

I've only tried few of Guerlains, but most of them are great for any men: Vetiver, L'Instant pH (EDT or EE), Mitsouko, L'Heure Bleue.

I haven't tried on as many but the ones I would wear (yeah, I've outgrown adolescent hang ups about wearing 'women' frags):-

    Mitsouko
    Shalimar
    Samsara
    Heritage
    L'instant pH
