Default ... Your one and only signature Vetiver ...

I've owned a few vetiver based scents. I've got Guerlain Vetiver. Though this scent is one of the best vetiver based perfume out there, it seems work not so well on me. Too old, and the vetiver note is not strong enough for my taste. Besides, the longervity of this one is weak. I've got Zara Vetiver. It's cheap, and it's a cute vetiver scent. Fresh, young, and cute vetiver. I've got Montale Red Vetiver. A very natural and energising vetiver I think. I also tried Lubin Vetiver. This one is...too vetiver to me. On my skin, I almost feel dry and smoky single vetiver note all the times. And A Diffirent Company Vetiver, Azzaro Vetiver, CdG Vetiver... There was still no Vetiver that I want.

I am not into vetiver until I try Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental. It is completely a vetiver that I'm longing for. So balance between the dryness /the smokeness of vetiver and oriental/woody notes. It's special, but not strange. It's masculin, complex, and totally enjoyable. Serge Lutens Vetiver works so amazingly on me. Wear it, and I've got so many good compliments about how I smell: So gentle, so attractive, so wonderful, so diffirent... And I love this unique Vetiver.

I know that we've got so many Vetiver related threads, but I still wanna make a new thread about Vetiver, just to share our taste about this beautiful note. So, what's your One and Only Vetiver?

I have several vetivers i enjoy for different reasons. If I could only keep one, I'd probably go with Lorenzo Villoresi's Vetiver, although it's perhaps a bit much for daily wear.

Although I haven't tried that many vetivers (f.e. I've yet to try CdG en FM) I actually like it if a scent doesn't have too much vetiver... I like it that the frag contains enough vetiver so that it's easy to detect but that it doesn't completely dominate.

Original Guerlain Vetiver EDC is the one for me!

Just to jump in on this conversation - Being familiar with all of these, I think I see what cpk is saying. Most people who are fans of EN would probably also like Lubin Vetiver, although the Lubin is a bit fresher and can turn a bit soapy on the drydown, at least it does that on me sometimes (but not always, which is interesting). Like cpk, I'd place (unreformulated) Route du Vetiver above them, and as I previously indicated, LV Vetiver, even above that. However, I'd still say any big vetiver fan probably owes it to himself to check out all the major players, which arguably is starting to include the Lubin version.

Vetiver for me is very much a mood fragrance, If I'm in the mood for the lighter side of vetiver I will wear something like Vetiver Hombre, or Vettiveru, or Racine,or Carlo Corinto's Vetyver. Which by the way is my favorite Vetiver. If I'm in the mood for vetiver with a punch, I will wear RdV, Annick Goutals offering, or perhaps Etro's vetiver. So my signature Vetiver depends on what kind of mood I'm in.Even if I did have a signature Vetiver it would probably change often anyway, as my mood for fragrances changes often.

Does anyone else find the drydown of Encre Noir really awful? It's a great scent, but the drydown seems to have one of those massive woody-ambers that it just ruins everything else for me.

Either way - I 2nd the Givenchy Vetyver. Pure, elegant, root-y vetiver and nothing else. If you can find a vintage bottle of Guerlain's Vetiver, I found it very similar.

Until recently, I would have said Givenchy Vetyver.

But now, I'd say Chanel Sycomore. No doubt. Rich, smoky, and full-bodied.

Yes, this is good as well. It has the fresh citrus, a mineral quality to it, and a rooty vetiver. If you are not a fan of the pungent vetiver from the root, then OV's fresh vetiver from the leaves will surely please.

Guerlain is still IT, although each strength and formulation is a little different..... Have you tried l'Occitane's Vetiver? It is very wearable. By the way, while not a pure vetiver scent, I think that the best vetiver is Creed's Baie de Genievre.

Yello all! I was just about to start a thread on the theraputic benefits of Vetiver but saw this thread and thought it would make sense to post here!

I've had LOADS goin on in my life over the past few years, hence why I've not been around as much, anyhoo, I was feeling really low the other day so I thought a trip through me drobe would help. I sprayed on a few scents and around 30mins later my mood had lifted, I mean really lifted. After a bit of investigating all the scents I had tried were vetiver heavy! M:Men by Matsushima, Guerlian Vetiver extreme etc.. Well I've been trying the same thing again today with other vetivers (Floris for one which is half price at the mo on their website!) and it really seems to work!

As for my main vetiver I would say M:Men for summer, a lovely lighter vetiver with a really creamy finish, very well done. For colder seasons I would say Floris Vetiver or of course Guerlain. The Extreme is a very nice slight variation on it too!

Guerlain's the best, IMHO, but I do agree it is somehow traditional, something I really enjoy.

L'Occitane's... I regard it as a mixture of cedar plus vetiver, can't help noticing some accords present in Gucci pH / Tumulte. Did you try L'Occitane's vetiver soap? It is marvelous.

Encro Noir hands down. although i do like Creed's OV for a more playful and fresh approach to the vetiver theme.

I am a novice to Vetiver. I received a sample of Guerlain Vetiver on Friday and tried it yesterday. This is one that I will have to revisit a few times. Initially the only scent I could get was that of an old folks home. However, after about 5 hrs I was abe to pick up a hint of tobacco and pepper. Fairly mild overall, its just that I couldnt get passed the old person smell.

Yesterday I happend to stop by Marshalls and noticed they had Azzaro Vetiver for only $14. I didnt want to just blind buy before I could read some reviews.

I am glad this thread was started because it gives me some great information on Vetivers to sample.

Hey TJMAC! If you want some not-so-expensive vetivers, I think you should try Zara Vetiver. About 25euro for a 200ml bottle, and the water inside is so beautiful.

I am agree with Sofresh. On me, Encre Noir dry down is weird and boring, I almost feel incense note so much more than vetiver note in this scent.

About Greed Vetiver. It's so pure, so natural, calm and enjoyable. But, I wish that this Vetiver could have better longervity.

I can see that so many basenoters love Givenchy Vetiver. I tried it once and I think I should retry it asap. I'm curious about L'occitane Vetiver, too.

I must agree , choosing just one vetiver frag is almost impossible. It is such a versatile note which produces many different frags for all different occasions and moods.
But I suppose if I was absolutely forced at gun-point ... I would still not be able to narrow down to any less than three .

Vetiver Oriental - Lutens (Agree totally with you here - Awesome frag !) ... (But also still not enough of a vetiver kick for me ).
    Vetiver Extraordinaire - Malle
    Route Du Vetiver - MPG
(And perhaps with Encre Noir trailing just very close behind - ... - See I just can't help it !).

After trying about 25 vetivers and keeping about 20 on hand, I'd have to go with Ron199. It's a versatile scent that's got notes from across the spectrum, from tobacco, to spice, to citrus. There's one that works for me each time I go for a vetiver!

As a huge Vetiver fan I've sampled a ton of them and own quite a few, but the ones I always tend to reach for are:

    Etro - Vetiver
    Lanvin - Vetyver

The Etro took some time to warm up to, but I really enjoy it's warm nutty accords and complete lack of sweetness.

The Lanvin I was completely underwhelmed and a bit dissapointed with at first, but I've found that if I apply it VERY generously it seems to become a completely different scent and the Vetiver becomes more evident. I reach for it when I want to smell nice, but will be working in close proximity to others and think it's a perfect choice for a Job interview.

Vetiver fragrances vary so much that I really can not have one. I like LV Vetiver for darkness and earthines and Sel d' Vetiver for sparkling freshness. But if pressed to select one as a signature I would chose Turtle Vetiver by Les Nez. It is a green damp soil & roots vetiver that is very cleansing in feel. Fantastic formula.

I have yet to find it, though every now and then I look, as I quite like the note. Usually I find them either too musty ( Vetiverru ), too grassy ( Guerlain ), or too plain ( both Fumidus AND Vetiver Extraordinaire - despite smelling quite different - were fairly one-not vetivers to my nose ). Vetiver Oriental I quite liked, as it was rich and complex and balanced, but it's somehow not "me" - I'm at a loss to explain just why.

I have yet to try many vetivers out there, but find myself curious about Sycamore, Encre Noire and the Floris.

I am very interested in sampling both Sycamore and Malle VE. However, someone once posted that their interpretation of Sycamore is that it wore lighter than Encre Noir. Quite frankly, the lightness of Encre Noir is what rules it out for me. On your skin, does Sycamore have excellent longevity and sillage, or does it wear lighter than Encre Noir?

    Thanks,

I don't find Sycamore light, and I don't find it lacking sillage at all. It's a different projection from EN, for sure. EN smells more focused, is what I'd say. Like it radiates out from a tight spot on you. But Sycomore wears more like sillage only, like it takes the air around you and moves in a cloud around you. EN feels like a hot rock blasting out it's heat/smell. The is-one-lighter-than-the-other question doesn't have a simple answer in the is-one-stronger-than-the-other sense. They're both strong, and Sycomore has longevity and sillage, believe me. If I were to say it's light, I'd say it is in the sense of a cool air of shade around you. Different effect from each of these to be sure. Wish I could be more helpful, but all I can give is this impressionistic answer.

I am in love with VETIVER EXTRAORDINAIRE and ENCRE NOIRE
Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

HI, I've not tried Vettiveru, Should I blind-buy? I like EN, and it's cheap.

I have no sillage or longevity issues with Sycomore.

TJ, honestly it's completely different experience wearing Sycamore vs. Encre Noire. To be honest, I don't have sillage/longevity issues with EN, and I have dry skin, (I'm going to assume that a lot of the longevity issues with Encre Noire may be due to a ton of musk in the basenotes and anosmia). Sycamore isn't louder than EN, but it is smoother and more refined. As much as I love my EN, it's quite apparent the quality difference in favor of Sycamore. Encre Noire is sharper and Sycamore is more refined and rounded, ever so slightly smokier as well. I haven't worn Sycamore enough to give accurate opinion on the sillage/longevity, someone else will have to give their opinion on that, but I think that personally I enjoy the smoother and more refined texture of Sycamore vs. the equally as interesting sharpness of Encre Noire.

if I had to choose only one (which I can't and won't) it would probobly be Vetiver Extraordinaire, but I love all my vetivers.

I put on Vetiver Oriental last night and I can still smell it on me. Although my nose is not trained enough and I cannnot get the vetiver in that one, it is a scent I do not want to do without.

I agree, the vetiver in VO is not at all prominent and almost gets totally lost in the composition. (though it is still definitely in there!) ... But it is just such a magnificent smelling frag, never the less ! - (It is definitely one of my fave Lutens) ... Though not particularly for the vetiver, as such. (So I suppose it probably doesn't really belong on my list)

Man, there a so many gorgeous vetiver scents, that to pick just one, would be like killing your darlings...

Lot's of good recommendations already, let me just add Adolfo Dominquez's Vetiver Hombre to the list. This is a 'happy' vetiver, I always reach for it in the summer.
