Default Colognes with the best drydowns/basenotes.

Since amassing a variety of scents I've noticed some of them don't smell very good or prominent to me after only a short time... say 3 hours. Even some of the supposed monsters out there like Opium EdT and Rive Gauche smell like hardly anything. I'm not sure if anyone else can smell it and it's just olfactory fatigue on my behalf.

Some ones with good bases are: A*Men, Kouros, Body Kouros, and the best: M7! What other scents have prominent bases?

Guerlain Vetiver is all about the base for me.

I only really like Aoud Cuir D'Arabie after it's calmed down and smoothed out in its base. Same goes for Original Aoud, and come to think of it, most oud-prominent fragrances... they often smell oddly medicinal to me.

Acqua Di Gio of course! OH wrong thread. I thought this was for the WORST drydowns. My bad.

    Oh wow...best drydowns...hmmm

Heritage EDT and EDP - Guerlain
Montale - Red Vetyver of course from me right?
    Vintage Tabarome - Creed
    Armani Eau Pour Homme
    Givenchy Gentleman
and I have to say for a mainstream Allure Homme Sport has a very nice drydown.

    The best though?
For me a tie between Heritage and Red Vetyver

While I love the entire wearing of Havana Reserva, the drydown is the best of all for me...to the point that I take one last sniff of my shirt before I toss it into the laundry basket. Awfully good.

OK. You guys are making me want to try Havana Reserva....I hope the new re-release of Havana maintains the magic of the original.

I would like to mention one more...Kouros
I think it is pretty special.

Completely agree with Heritage, both edt and edp. It's one of my top five favorite scents.

Both Aromatics Elixir and Aramis 900 come on very strong at first, but dry down to a completely unique and seriously complex herbal, bitter, green floral/patchouli/vetiver that is irresistable for me.

I also really love musky drydowns...the best I've found so far (and are among my top 10 scents) are Profumum Thundra and Ungaro II. (dying to try Musc Ravageur and The Khan)

Yes, I'll mention my fave again: Acqua Di Parma Colognia Intensa - the base is the best part.

Mostly, what you get are the same basenotes with a hint of this or that from the top/heart, so it's not a question of "better," but what you are seeking at that particular time. Of course, some frags are weak and don't have much to offer beyond a few hours, if that, but I'm talking about the long-lasting ones. For example, Michael for Men has a great drydown, but if you don't like certain notes, such as patchouli (or if you are not in the mood for it) then you might really dislike it.

Another issue is how common it is. Woody/ambers are very common, and some criticize this type of base for that reason, yet they are common because they are very good. Frags with a heavy mossy base are out of favor now, but are they "bad?" I find that they lack dynamism due to this heavy quality, but isn't it a matter of personal taste. One frag that I'm surprised by is Vetiver de Puig. I don't wear it often (once a month usually) but when I do I'm surprised at how good the base is (and it lasts a long time). The dynamism in that base is incredible, considering how "simple" it is considered by some BNers. But again, others may perceive it differently.

I haven't worn M7, but I suspect the oud is likely synethetic, so I'm not sure if it'll have the same "barnyard" top notes some natural ouds have. Oud can smell rather odd to western noses, so quite a few westernized versions have somewhat sanitized versions of it ( even Montale, to some extent ).

Both Xeryus and Equipage have had me wondering if I should ask who's wearing that great fragrance - only to realize later that it was me.

While I'm very partial to the top and heart, Knize Ten has a great base if you're willing to wait for it. I also like the sandalwood finish in Czech & Speake No. 88

Strangely you mentioned mostly YSL scents.
    Try others!
Fumidus by Profumum is all the base, and I could detect it after shower.
Onda by Vero Kern is the hairy vetiver beast.
Haramens by Parfumerie Generale is the most long-living scent from my wardrobe, milky-musky sillage is fantastic in longevity.

Also I`d say a couple words of some Animalis base - if I`ve got it. The close to it is U-Animal base from the set of PerfumersWorld, Bangkok, Thailand.

Mine is Creed Himalaya with the drydown being absolute heavenly bliss. Fruity, floral, woody, and soapy clean. A good whiff of the cap can leave you smelling this for quite a time.

    Carnal Flower
    Noir Epices
    Coromandel
    Taste of Heaven
    Eau des Iles
    Habit Rouge
    Jubilation XXV

Maybe I'm mixing up longevity with drydown here but these have all retained their character and then settled beautifully for me after many hours.

It may be an odd choice, but I find the drydown of Terre d'Hermès constantly amazing. There's nothing like smelling it on a shirt some days after having worn it!

I'd mention even Green Irish Tweed, a bottle from 2003. Amazing and extended drydown - no other bottle I bought of it afterwards could achieve that. I finally gave up hunting for it.

Dreamer does have a really nice dry down. Night and day from where it begins. I think it's drydown is similar to Givenchy Pi's top notes, and only noticed the similarity this weekend when I sprayed pi on my skin (hadn't worn it in about a month) and was instantly reminded of Dreamer's base notes.

Havana for Men is veryyy similar to Havana Reserva in both Base/Drydown. Both are incredible.

Montana Parfum d'Homme has a fantastic Base/Drydown also, and can be owned for under $30/4.2 oz..
