Default Worst perfume ads of all time?

This has to be at least as fun as the 'best' thread.

OK... A little off the exact topic... but I cannot let the newcomers to Basenotes miss out on one of the greatest responses to a topic starter, EVER, here at Basenotes, as long as I have been here.

The Topic: Has Anyone Here Smelled Paris Hilton's Can Can?

    Reply: Gawd, I hope not.

Now that would be a BAD AD! :-))))

On topic, fun question! But I have no immediate response becuase I generally enjoy all fragrance ads. Metaphorically, fragrance ads are like a drug for me. I really don't care whether I have tried it or not. I would like to try it, or try it again, and where do I go to get it???

I like many, if not most, perfume ads - vintages, modern...anything really!

But I thought this one was just awful (partially because I loath Mariah Carey and partially because those shoes are hideous!)

Worst to me would be anything by Tom Ford - trying way too hard to be groundbreaking, sexy and ironic but missing the mark on all counts.

Yah, easy. Tom Ford. It's really a feat how his advertising instantly predisposes me to hating anything marketed under his name, or worse for him, not even care what crap he produces. That and the fact that White Patchouli first gave me the worst rash ever and then made me throw up - I only wish I was making that bit up.
That said, vintage advertising has a lot of "gems", too. In the category: "hello and screw you, too":

    Or how about:

Subtle like a whack to the head with a sledgehammer, those two.

It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

Tom Ford's Black Orchid was the only perfume ever that made me throw up. And I did not even see his ads until just now.

Yes, Tom Ford's "anatomical" ads were certainly eye-catching, to say the least. I wonder what response would occur if given the same "anatomical" approach was used in a men's fragrance. I can see it now: a pair of hairy thighs displaying a sleek bottle of scent!

On the other hand, the fragrance "Babe" was marketed to the new "liberated" woman.

The 1970s saw a huge backlash against the women's movement with books on how to be a real "woman": domestic and catering to a man's traditional role.

Read "Total Woman" (a guide on how to have the perfect traditional marriage) and I dare a woman of pluck to read it without laughing out loud!

You are probably refering to this Tom Ford ad:

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds ad that's on every Christmas and Mother's Day. Haven't they aired the same ad, complete with DC-3 airplane, for ten years? (Even as an airplane fan, I still hate this ad.)

Yeah, I agree on Tom Ford -- after seeing the ads, I'm disinclined to seek out his scents to sample. BTW, Black Orchid was not too bad -- true, brash and loud just like his personality as I perceive from the ads, but at least memorable.

Did you notice that TF private blends are all on the rage on the Men's board... So men and women are different, after all?

You know I really hate the Tom Ford ads, too. He seems so egotistical in them. But someone here posted a vid of him talking about his fragrances, he was in a dept. store for a special presentation or something, and he seemed like such a sweet guy...nothing at all like the way he is protrayed in the ads.

Those Ma Griffe and Emeraude ads are gag-worthy!

The "Vanity Fair" cover with Tom Ford, Scarlet Johannsen and Kiera Knightley--and thank goodness someone spoofed it:

...looks like this painting by Manet: men clothed and women naked.

I'd like to see a spoof with the women clothed (in full skirts, like in Manet's day) and the men naked. LOL!

I had in mind a Tom Ford ad when I posted this.

This recent one has been bothering me: http://www.mimifroufrou.com/scenteds...-Musk-Ad-B.jpg
and of course this one was offensive although less subtle:
    http://www.mimifroufrou.com/scenteds...for%20men2.jpg

To be honest, I've never sampled a Tom Ford scent yet, and I have no plans to do so in spite of being otherwise curious about the white musk collection.

I expected more kitsch in the responses actually. Bad ads that didn't make me a bit sad.

This one for SJP Covet has always puzzled me

What were they thinking?? Going for edgy, perhaps? It always made me think 'ew that's gross' (not the emotion you want to evoke when selling a personal care product)

That painting, Le DÚjeuner sur l'Herbe, was met with a lot of hostility when it was exhibited back in the day - ostensibly because of the clothed men juxtaposed with the nude woman - but the real insult, according to my old art history prof, was the way the comfortably nude woman looks boldly out from the canvas at those who are looking at her. I don't know. It seems like that might be Tom Ford's intention, but his "sexy" stare just seems a bit silly to me. I agree it would be a fun spoof to see the men nude and the women clothed for a change!

Looks like he's all about possession and greed, and she's all about narcissism? What decade are we in again? Oh yeah, same-old same-old.

Covet ad has some undertones of "Chicago" to it. That reminds me of what a stinker Covet (and Pure Bloom) was for SJP. A loss-leader. And now that trio of barely passable scents lacking in the deftness of Lovely's ashy tones.

It's the cover of the 1973 Rolling Stones Album Goat's Head Soup. And me being surprised that someone would not instantly recognize it says something about my advanced age, I guess .

For some reason the thought of Jagger advertising Flowerbomb is unendingly hilarious to me, especially if that was the ad!
