I’d recommend Ava Luxe Bois Fonce / Oud – the samples are not easy to come by, but if for example you are ordering from The Perfumed Court, you could add a sample. I prefer it to the Montale oud fragrances because it’s just oud (and not other notes that Montales have, i.e. rose-oud combos that Montales are known for). Ava Luxe is also quite reasonably priced.

Montale Black Auod, should be every one start to auod fragrance.

Black Aoud by montale is nice. Aoud Rose Petals is also nice with a clear definite contrast between the florals and the oudh.

    Good luck.

Montale Original Oud for a pure oud note; Black Aoud for a rose/oud combo.

    Thirded!

I recently tried Oud Wood, and it is actually a great starting place for oud. It's very woody and smooth, and very easy to wear for an oud scent. The Montales are more aggressive with their oud, so if you're just wanting an introduction to this note, I'd suggest going to Nordstrom and asking for a sample. My local Nordstrom just started carrying the entire Private Blends collection, and the SAs usually make samples if you ask.

If you want to try oud, just jump right on in there...no need to start with a 'safe' oud, that's no fun.

I'd third the recommendation of Original Aoud for a more realistic oud note.

Other than that I'd personally stay away from the montales which treat oud in a rather astringent/brash manner. M7 is a good recommendation. If you are looking at niche and are interested in an oud/rose combo, I'd suggest checking out M.Micallef's Aoud (homme).

Absolutely.....why not try the real thing? http://www.tigerflag.com/agarwood_oud_oil.html
$30 for 1ml of real CO2 extracted Indian Oud oil which can last a long time because it's so potent.
It's no where near the finest quality but it'll give you an idea of what real oud is all about. :-)

White Aoud by Montale is a good starter oud scent - you get 'some' of the band aid effect but it does wear extremely well .

Honestly, if you want oud I would avoid M7. It's recommended a lot for it's oud-yness, but honestly I get almost none at all from it. M7 -is- a great scent, though, and is well worth a try regardless of oud.

If you want to try oud, I would recommend Montale's Original Aoud.

Keep in mind that you may not love the scent right away... I know my nose went "oh my GOD wtf is that" when I first tried real oud oil, and wasn't much different when I tested out Original Aoud. Now, though, I think it's great and it's really just something you need to get used to over a few wearings.

Black Aoud is an amazing fragrance, but the oud is matched by the rose and if you're looking for a straight up oud, it's nothing at all like it. Definitely worth getting a sample of, though, because it's astonishingly good.
