Default Anyone own Iris 39? (or other iris wonders?)

    Hey gang,
I'm currently on an iris binge and have a sample of this Le Labo creation currently in transit. My confusion is over whether this is labelled a male or female fragrance, since I've seen images attesting to both! Not that it really matters, but I'm just curious really. If anyone owns a proper bottle of Iris 39 let me know. (And if you own this bottle of Iris 39, post a photo, because it looks very nice indeed).

First image is from Liberty of London and second is from luckyscent.com

And for everyone else, let's hear about your favourite irises! Mine: Iris Silver Mist (of course!) and Dzongkha.

I love Divine L'Homme de Coeur best. Great juniper opening and then a rooty, slightly sweet orris that rides close to the skin but lasts quite well.
And Dior Homme is really fine stuff, too. Some days it seems too sweet to me and others I get the carroty/dirt thing more prominently and love it.
I'd be interested in your reaction when you get your mits on Iris 39.

As far as I know, Le Labo markets its fragrances as unisex. I think Iris 39 is one of their better offerings, but it does not displace other outstanding iris scents, especially Iris Bleu Gris, L'Homme de Coeur, Iris de Nuit, Iris Silver Mist, and 28 La Pausa. My personal favorite among iris scents is Iris Bleu Gris, followed by Iris de Nuit and L'Homme de Coeur.

My top iris picks are Iris Silver Mist, Iris Taizo and Bois d'Argent. Probably my favorite is Iris Taizo, at the moment, as I feel it would be more wearable on a day-to-day basis than ISM.

There was a very extensive thread on iris scents several months ago. If you don't get the responses you hoped for, you might try searching back for it.

I have a large sample of Iris 39 and like it, but I don't intend to buy a bottle of it - it's a bit too floral for my tastes. I would place it more in the feminine category than masculine.

    Other iris favorites:
    - Bois d'Iris - Fantastic dry, woody iris
    - Iris Silver Mist - Ultimate iris
    - Dior Homme - In my Top 5, and not simply for the iris note. It's just good.
    - 28 Rue La Pausa - Spectacular feminine iris

I LOVE Iris 39. I have a little bit but would love a FB. It has the most stunning drydown's I've experienced in a long time, and every minute of it is better than the last. Moments of a fabulous lush "dirty" note that makes it even more delicious.

Kind of floral but in small doses a man would smell divine in this. YUM

    My fave irises:

    1 Apres l'Ondee
    2 28 La Pausa
    3 Iris 39
    4 Heeley Iris de Nuit

I'm dying to try Iris Bleu Gris but I'm worried it is too masculine.

Haven't sampled this but it sure does sound delish

My current Iris fixes are TDC Bois d'Iris, MPG Iris Bleu Gris and a rooty orris prominent attar called Khadin.

well a new iris I just sampled is
Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d'iris
its not on sale until September
but at most NM its on the counter
what I love about it is the longetivity
most irises are to fading for my taste
I am not afraid... I was born to do this.

I'm not a fan of iris, so perhaps what I like won't be representative of the best iris offerings, but after trying quite a few (Iris Silver Mist included), the only two that I like enough to potentially own would be Divine L'Homme de Coeur and Dior Homme Cologne.

I'm sorry for saying that, but I think Iris Bleu Gris is the perfect iris... for those who doesn't like iris. It has no iris at all. Actually it's violet, which reminds me very much of Grey Flannel (which is good, but much cheaper).

Iris Poudre is a nice scent, but also is not really about iris. It's more like Chanel No.5.

These two were really a frustrating experience for me. They dont deserve the word "iris" in their names.

Iris Silver Mist is my favorite of all. This is a real iris. Earthy, ethereal and beautiful.

Bois d'Iris (TDC) is also another awesome scent. Beautiful, dry and woody iris.

Chanel No.19 EDP has a very beautiful iris note too, mixed with some other florals and over a chypre base. Very classy.

Dzongkha is a great incensy iris, calm, meditative and relaxing. Very nice too.

Hiris starts very well, with an earthy iris, but unfortunately it fades away too fast and gets too subtle.

Dior Homme starts with a very nice iris too, which tends to evolve to a gourmand-like base. The iris adds a classy veil to it, while the base adds the modern feel. Great fragrance IMO too.

I'll post later if I remember any other iris fragrances i've tried.

You hit all the big names in men's iris/orris scents! I like Iris 39 because it smells a little dirty in a very French sort of way... TDC Bois d'Iris, Dior Homme, and Lanvin Arpège pH are also pretty good, each one tweaked to appeal to one kind of taste or another. The reviews in the Basenotes Directory for each one run the pros and cons of various preferences...

To me, Grey Flannel is all about lavender. I don't get that in IBG. IBG has vetiver and a rooty iris. It's a deep blue sweet iris, like the flower. If you have had PG - Iris Taizo, I get some of this, almost blackberry sensation there, too.

I'm afraid I'm with kumquat on this. I don't get much violet in Iris Bleu Gris, and smell very little resemblance to Grey Flannel. (I just sniffed the two side-by-side to check. )

I do agree that Iris Poudre has a lot more than just iris going on in it, though I happen to love the stuff. Of course No. 5 itself is chock-full of iris, so it's not a completely unfavorable comparison!

I think Iris 39 is wonderful & deserves more hype. As has been mentioned, it's dirty and this aspect combined with the florals makes it distinctive and unisex.

Iris with patchouli to emphasize the rooty part of orris butter = Iris 39.
Great, transparent and very long-lasting iris scent.

Yes, I`ve got a bottle from NoLIta with my wife`s name on it. Sorry, I have not a picture.

As for best irises for me - IBG, Iris 39, La Pausa, Iris Pallida L`Artisan, Irisss Xerjoff. Not in order of preference.
    Vetiver The Great!!!

The best Iris fragrances have been mentioned above, my personal favourites are Xerjoff Irisss and SL Iris Silver Mist on the rooty, earthy side; Heeley's Iris de Nuit, L'Artisan's Dzongkha, Iris Pallida and Odori's Iris on the fresh, boozy side. La Pausa and DelRae's Mythique are lighter with a mellow floral aspect, beautiful for warm summer days. Iris 39 is one that I really like but that gets cloying on my skin if overapplied, because of the strong patchouli note that appears after a while.

As much as I wish to like Iris Bleu Gris, I never got any iris note there...

Awesome responses here! I've loaded up my cart on the perfumed court with the ones I haven't tried, particularly keen for Heeley's Iris de Nuit and Divine L'Homme de Coeur.

I liked Iris Pallida a lot, but found it a touch too sweet and delicate for me to regularly wear, but had a very nice fruit note. (It also disappeared very quickly). Dior Homme I liked initially, but found the synthetic fruit a little grating (the same ingredient seems to be centrepiece in Burberry The Beat for women) when over-applied. I'll agree that Iris Poudre has a lot more going on than just iris. I was expecting Iris Silver Mist redux and got a little disappointed, but I'll definitely try it again next time I'm in store.

My faves up to date are Bois d'Iris (slightly soapy, touch of ginger and dry woods) and Hiris (nice fresh-carotty opening, powdery floral heart).
Dzonghka iris? I need to resniff.
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

Well, you know I am not a specialist and maybe you both are right and i'm wrong. But, here on BN, Grey Flannel has no lavender in it's pyramid (but here it may be lacking some notes). Also in some others well known fragrance sites, lavender is not listed on it's notes too. Violet is there in all of them. Anyway, it can be just a different effect in different skins, but I'm not the only one here in BN that found resemblances between Iris Bleu Gris and Grey Flannel.

Maybe you are right here again, but for me they have no prominent iris note to justify the name. I think they are more about Ylang-Ylang.

Well, you're right about the notes. I have only smelled the newer, probably lesser version. It smells soapy & lavenderesque to me. But, hey, that's just me!
