Detailed instructions on How to decant fragrances from SPRAY bottles into atomizers?

I have; unsuccessfully, attempted to find a thread that addresses the entire process of decanting fragrances.

I would like to decant spray bottles (my collection of fragrances) into atomizers mainly for travel purposes but most importantly in order to carry an atomizer (in my pocket) so I may freshen/reapply the fragrance throughout the day.

I am a neophyte and need your help with the following:

Can someone provide a detailed outline of the decanting process--From buying the appropriate supplies (vial/atomizer—size, material; funnels, pipettes, etc) to the detailed steps and instructions to decant spray bottles into atomizers.

A few questions:

1) Which material is better: glass or plastic?---is one or the other more prone to leak? If I am carrying the atomizer in my pocket, is plastic a better option?

2) What size atomizers should I purchase so it may comfortably fit in my pocket, but it contains enough fragrance to spray multiple times throughout the day?

3) Which fragrance/bottle supplier is the best for people who do NOT order in bulk but do not want to compromise quality (I'll probably buy only two dozen atomizers so price is NOT really an issue –I do not care if I pay extra if I get quality atomizers that do not leak)?

There are numerous 'fragrance supplies' websites I have come across. Namely; madinaonline.com, pilotvials.com, snowdriftfarm.com accessoriesforfragrances.com, lotioncrafter.com, specialtybottle.com, etc. Which is the best?

4) Do I need a funnel? Plastic or stainless steel? What about pipettes?

Don't overcomplicate this.

Buy small glass bottles from any of the suppliers you've mentioned. Hold the sprayer of the original bottle up against the opening of the new, smaller one. Spray spray spray. Attach the spray top tightly. No need for funnels. No real use for pipettes, if the original bottle is a typical spray design.

Purse sprays? I don't carry a purse, but I do use bottles that are slightly larger than "sample size" -- enough to give me 4-6 wearings, which gives me enough to take along when I travel. I like caps on the sprayers, so they don't accidentally spray. Plus it's easier to spray into your decant if it doesn't have a tiny opening.

I agree with Paul re: overcomplicating an intrinsically simple process. This isn't rocket science - you're just moving some liquid from one container to another.

I prefer glass because it's more inert than plastic, but considering the brief time the fragrance is in the container, it's probably irrelevant.

I use a small funnel (available from the same folks that sell the bottles); it's easier to hit a large target than a small one, so the smaller the receiving bottle, the more you'll want a funnel.

I suggest you order a dozen 2.5 mL and a dozen 5 mL, then decide which you prefer. If you stay in this hobby for any length of time, you'll find a use for both sizes.

I read one post somewhere that suggested pushing the sprayer slowly so that it comes out as a stream or narrow spray rather than a wide spray.

Decanting may be a little messy and troublesome, but is a straight forward procedure, these threads are proof that you don't need a guide for decanting

LOL! It would not surprise me if I am overcomplicating this. I am notorious for creating convoluted problems to simple decisions.

Actually, I think anyone considering decanting should thoroughly review Horace Mann's seminal reference on hydrodynamics, (Hydrodynamics, 6th ed., Cambridge University Press). Failing to understand the complex forces at play during the decant process could result in serious embarrassment.

Do you guys re-use your decanting bottles? I am sure there would be no problem filling it again with the same fragrance, but can you wash them out and put a different frag in them?

It depends. The small decant atomizers are pretty cheap, so I don't usually refill with different juice, I just start a new one. But I've been caught short a few times, at which point I wash everything in hot soapy water, then rinse several times with 95% isopropanol (available at drug stores), then let air dry. That usually cleans it up pretty good. Of course, glass is preferable to plastic for refilling with different perfume.
