    Default Top 5 niche fragrances

I am truly curious as to what members consider to be the ABSOLUTE TOP 5 niche releases.

It doesn't matter to me what category the scent falls in or what house released it ( other than MPG). I have gone through the review section and have my "little list", but doing that way usually doesn't reflect what the active members think as a majority.

I want to exclude MPG because of the current inability to find their better masculine releases. I ask because my drobe is overwhelmingly classic and vintage and it's time to expand my horizons a bit.

Serge Lutens Gris Clair - knowing your penchant for heavier scents (especially lavender oriented..)
Mazzolari Mazzolari - "Massive" (green) "woody" scent. so darn underrated..
Parfumerie Generale Corps et Ames - love Givenchy Gentlemen..? try this exotic take on GG. (disclaimer: is different enough, but has some similarities, especially the use of patch and leather)
Montale Black Oudh - enuff said. doesnt get better. starts gritty...moves on to buttery rose based cream with soft patchouli and luscious oudh...
Pierre Frapin Caravelle Epicee - one of the sexiest, spicy scent out there. This one will charm you.

all of the above are a bit on the heavier side and in some way has the charm of classics.

New York by Parfums de Nicolai.
    Uomo by Villoresi.
    L'Air du Desert Morocain.
    Dzongkha / L'Artisan.
Carnal Flower / Noir Epices / French Lover by Frederic Malle

Not much Patchouli there, I'm afraid Aromi, but these are niche that I suspect will last . . .

AdP Colonia, of course, altho I don't know if that is technically niche.
If you haven't already you may enjoy MPG Eau des Iles - hasn't disappeared yet.

I've not been disappointed by Centaure, but it's probably similar to several scents you already have.

    AbdesSalaam Attar/Profumo.it: Oak Moss

There may be better overall, or even better in class, but each has its own departure point from "classic" and "vintage"

I tend to like orientals by far over other types of fragrances, so I do have a bias in my selection. Something like Villoresi's Uomo, I don't really care for, even in hot weather.

Serge Lutens - Iris Silver Mist (wore this one lately on a hot day with a lot of physical activity and actually, it gets even better under these conditions)
    Santa Maria Novella - Nostalgia
Montale - Royal Aoud (if I have to choose one...)
    Serge Lutens - Borneo 1834
Serge Lutens -Sarassins (I had to write and backspace a lot before adding this one, but I simply must: applied with caution gets me more compliments than any of the above and I simply love the purity of jasmine in it)

Having read your remarks on MPG (the single house that populates my wardrobe most heavily), the NEW versions of Iris Bleu Gris deserves a place in there, as well as Santal Noble and probably Bois de Turquie. And last time I checked almost the entire masculine line is again available from my favourite online retailer, Ausliebezumduft!!!!

Vibert you and you're L'Eau de Ryokuei! I can't find it anywhere online to test it and I want to SO bad! Everytime I forget about it, you mention it again, and that urge begins all over again.

I'm going to go on what I find the most interesting and original, although I've happily worn all these at one time or another.

Serge Lutens - Iris Silver Mist

What can you say when a single fragrance becomes so genre-defining? I've smelled literally dozens of iris fragrances, and nothing as of yet has really held a candle to Iris Silver Mist. It's dark, earthy, and rich, and yet spicy and and edgy at the same time. It's unique in its approach to iris, and unique in the perfume world in general ( it's still the most successful "earthy" fragrance I know ).

Comme des Garcons - Stephen Jones

A sheer, white wall of aldehydes that dries down to a very dry yet very intense violet. To me, this is the most successful "modern" take on violet I know, though to be fair, I've yet to smell the similarly-praised Dans Tes Bras. It removes violet from the powdery or green context it's usually placed in and makes it cool, steely and brilliant.

    Parfumerie Generale - Tubereuse Couture

A polished gourmand-floral that's a million miles from blunt sugar-bombs like Angel ( sorry, Angel fans ). Here a dark yet sharply sweet sugar cane note is nestled with ginger and wintergreen in a bed of creamy white florals, ylang-ylang and tuberose being the most prominent, gradually drying down to a musky benzoin base.

    Montale - Oud Cuir d'Arabie

It's smoky, it's dark, it's medicinal, and it's probably my favorite leather fragrance to wear lately. The oud-leather combination here is in fact overwhelming in the top notes, but in the drydown it changes character and becomes smooth and rich, a faint underlying rose adding a hint of warmth absent in the top notes.

    Eau D'Italie - Magnolia Romana

This is my favorite fragrance by Bertrand Duchaufour, whose work I don't usually get along with. Here a peppery-smoky quality is blended with an interesting mix of green, aquatic, and floral to make something peculiarly otherworldly and unique. This is both the most austere and the most interesting green-floral I know.

I don't know that you'd necessarily like these, these are just my niche top five at this moment.

As an aside, L'Air du Desert Marocain has taken a bit of a slide in popularity this year, hasn't it? I think if this question was asked two years back nearly every list would have had it ( including my own, for that matter ).

Galamb and 3xasif, Magnolia Romana and Un Parfum des sens et Bois both flirted with my list. Thumbs up for those two scents, they'd most likely make it into a top 10 from me.

These 10 niche scents have been finalists at least twice for the Basenotes Best Niche Scent Award over the last 5 years:

    Green Irish Tweed
    Musc Ravageur
    Silver Mountain Water
    Bois du Portugal
    Piper Nigrum
    Voleur de Roses
    L’Air de Desert Moracain
    Black Aoud
    Santal Noble
    Fumerie Turque
    Chergui
    Ormande Man

The niche scents I own, ranked in my order of preference:

    1. Bois du Portugal
    1A. PdNY
    3. GIT
    4. Cuba
    5. Silver Mountain Water
    6. No. 88
    7. Kolnisch Juchten

If 1776 Russian Leather is considered niche, it'd be near the top.
