Default Which BN "masterpieces"/"classics" were disappointments? POLL.

You read some BN posts about it, as well as the BN reviews, you knew what the notes were, you thought it might be your "Holy Grail," yet when you finally got your hands on a sample, you didn't like it at all ! I'll be real curious to see the results.

Z-14, but only because I found the cinnamon note to be very annoying.

Oh, and everything about Fleur Du Male is wrong, wrong, wrong.

CdG Hinoki was a huge disappointment.
All I get is waves of Iso E Super mixed with varnish. I know, tastes differ and all that, but I really fail to grasp its appeal to so many people.

MKK - smelled like balls to me and was/is totally unwearable. I know this is a subjective thing though - I don't doubt the quality and construction of it. Just not AT ALL what I thought it would be like. And I'm a guy who loves animalic fragrances like Dzing, Kiehls and Jicky.

More of a Turin disappointment than a Basenotes disappointment, but Fath's Iris Gris was a flat, soapy, unremarkable iris.

Sorry but the poll took a long time to create! LOL. Also, though I didn't like Kouros, I wasn't disappointed because it smelled like what I thought it would, based upon the BN reviews.

I answered the GIT and Azzaro on the poll, but they weren't big disappoints, perhaps because I didn't have to put a lot of effort into obtaining a sample. I didn't really expect to like GIT because of how I relate to aquatics, and Azzaro smells nice, it's just faaaaaaaar too weak.

Of the list, I picked Guerlain Vetiver, Havana and Egoiste as "relative" disappointments. I dont find either Havana or the current rendition of Guerlain Vetiver as good as one would be led to believe by reading about them on here.

I'm a little nervous about trying Havana because the hype is SO huge right now no fragrance could possibly live up to the mania.

Absolutely fantastic idea for a poll! I always wondered how many others were (if any at all) disappointed with some of these as much as I was. I can't wait to see the results in the morning!

I am not disappointed, but rather, un-wowed. My vote: Antaeus.

Even though it's not on your list, Ungaro III was a disappointment for me. I mean, I don't hate it, but all the bells and whistles were kinda fer nuth'n.

GIT for sure. It's the "grail" to so many and I just don't see it. It's not even in the top 5 of that house let alone the top of the heap, as it is often credited. This is an interesting question, though. Because you can like something and yet still have been disappointed. I do like GIT and I don't really care for Eau Savauge, and yet GIT was the bigger disappointment. This will be interesting once the masses chime in.

As to Havana, I read in the BN directory that it was like Montana "red box" but with tobacco, so it didn't disappoint, though it's not for me. Jazz Prestige is my pick from this group (which also includes Vintage Tabarome), though again, I'm not a big fan of this kind of frag at this point. I never thought I'd be wowed by GIT, so again that was not a disappointment, though I don't like it.

    I answered:

Havana - I was expecting delicious cigar and rum, and I got a well-blended chypre with an herbal top and just notes of cigar and rum hidden in the middle. Not bad, but not what I was expecting.

GIT - That ozone note = yuck. And this was after having tried and enjoyed other Creeds...

Habit Rouge - one word: civet.

Bois Du Portugal - too powdery.

Once I finally had a chance to smell GIT, not only did I NOT see what all the fuss was, I actually thought it was rather nasty.

Kouros certainly didn't disappoint me, it actually, to this very day, blows me away. Will anything this bold and avant-garde be unleashed on the public again? Only in the niche market. That said, I can't wear it, but I do wear the Sport version.
Green Irish Tweed is very harsh to my nose - I'm not a violet lover, Grey Flannel feels very similar to me. I'm keeping a bottle of Cool Water around as my 80s cultural souvenir.

    Hands down, the much-hyped GIT.
Guerlain Vetiver lands a close second.

I wholeheartedly agree. The massive appeal of TdH eludes me.

    Thirded.

I recently came to actually enjoy TdH again - at least its basic structure - that is until 4-5 hours in when the scent becomes piercing to my nose. It's not the iso e super as I don't have a problem with that in other scents.. it's that damn aspirin like salicylic note. I once got that aroma when blending grapefruit and opoponax oils at about a 35/65 ratio. It was aspirin like, chalky, and disgusting. Anyhow, I fell asleep with about 3 sprays of TdH still going strong on my chest and woke up with the most massive throat and head ache. Shortly after showering it off I felt totally fine - so it was definitely the TdH that caused my pains.

I do appreciate its basic structure and the fact that it's really quite dry and unsweetened - I just wish it was made with more naturals or at least less of the aspirin like note. Given how restrained the scent is after the first 30 minutes or so, i don't see how it has garnered so much love here on BN.

Antaeus mildly disappointed me, all i got was patchouli. Egoiste was unlike anything I had ever smelled, but way too strong to like.......

Definitely agree on TDH but from the list has to be Fahrenheit.

I don't know if anyone's pointed it out yet but this poll isn't going to make any sense and certainly doesn't make any sense right now - not everyone has smelled everything on this list. I've smelled GIT but I haven't smelled Iquitos. Fahrenheit but not Knize Ten.

    From this list, mainly Kouros.

On the other hand, some of the other frags on the list, mainly K10, Antaeus, BDP and Eau Sauvage I still perceive as masterpieces to this day.

I bought Gurlain Vetiver after all the good reviews but after spending a lot of time with the fragrance. There was this synthetic plastic note that my nose kept picking up and it really bugged me. In the end I gave my bottle away I just could not live with smelling that note.

I voted for Green Irish Tweed. When I first joined Basenotes it seemed to be one of the most talked about and admired frags.

I really like all the ones in your poll except for GIT. It is one of the biggest disappointments in my collection. But to be fair, I don't enjoy that particular accord, shared by Cool Water and Floris JF and possibly a few others.
