Default If you could choose one

We all adore fragrances, clearly, and wear different ones all the time, sometimes at the same time even. But, if you could choose just one fragrance to have, your absolute favorite of them all, what would it be? My neighbour asked me that question and I have absolutely, positively no idea!! Do you?

Big gulp - Guerlain Plus Que Jamais

Though it wouldn't feel right at all times of day or all seasons. I recently noticed that a number of my most favourite scents have ylang ylang in them - it is uncanny.

The ONE is often my sotd. Today I'm wearing Shalimar; I love the incensey opoponax and I swear I could live in this!

Tomorrow I might wear Vol de Nuit and realise that this is it. Then I'll realise that vintage Antaeus is something I can't live without. Or Chanel No 19. Mitsouko feels like a pretty "so-so" choice until I wear it and is reminded about why it's such a classic. And so on.

Like Lilybelle.. I don't know if I can do that . However, if push came to a big shove, I will have to revert back to Mitsouko ...we share DNA ....

This is difficult, but since they don't know and certainly wouldn't take it personally anyway, I will for the sake of the thread choose one - Chanel No 19.

But I'm sort of fickle, and like tott up there I tend to think (if not declare), "Surely this is the most glorious fragrance ever created!" of whatever I'm wearing at the time.

I guess if I actually had to pick one forever, I'd just take Chanel No 5 because it's beyond reproach and good for almost any occasion.

Problem is, its not my favorite. In fact, if you'd asked for a list of "choose 5" or even "choose 3," Chanel no 5 wouldn't make the cut. So, for this question, I choose based not on what my favorite is, but what is the most versatile out of my top scents.

All time favorite? Probably Mitsouko. Maybe Chanel Cuir de Russie.

Chanel No. 19 is my favorite, but it's too challenging to wear every day. I guess if I absolutely _had_ to choose just one, it might be Cristalle - it has a lot of what I love in 19, but I could wear it any time.

But I'd never, ever, limit myself to one voluntarily. I do sometimes seriously consider going down to ten, or even five, but not one.

I'd choose Cuir de Russie (parfum) as my favorite. This is the one I'd grab from a burning building if I only had time to take one thing.

But I agree with Mo's logic....if I was being practical about it and could only have one perfume for the rest of my life, maybe I'd go for something lighter and less seasonal....and something I won't get sick of. Perhaps an iris fragrance--Iris Nobile EDP, Delrae Mythique, or TDC Bois d'Iris.

Esencia de Loewe for me. Classy and not as popular which makes it almost exclusively mine.

Since I don't think I could endure a life without smelling either jasmine or rose, I might pick a classic: something like Joy, since it is very rich in all the florals that I love.

OMG - this is the ultimate nightmare for every true Basenoter!

I´d choose D&G Feminine, it´s a kind of scent that in a way is never "wrong", I have also never regretted it when picking it for my SotD, which is the case with so many others.

First I thought of Chanel no 5, but I don´t want to smell of something everyone and their dog recognize.
    Silly me!

Ormonde Woman. But of course I would never wear just one scent, because I'd become anosmic to it and that would be terrible!

I love so many. I'd like to be able to say Habanita or NR for Her, but the reality is, Shalimar always always smells perfect. In the summer, it becomes all suede-salty and hay-sweet in the heat, and in the winter, I get a lot of spice and warm vanilla out of it. It's my easiest frag, the one I can just spray and go and not have to think about. It's never too strong, but it always hangs around all day long. And my husband, who doesn't take much notice of my perfume, always likes Shalimar. It's basically the perfect scent for me.

So I've had a long, hard think about this and like many of you, agree with Mo's logic. My answer (can hardly believe I have one!), has to be vintage Chanel no5 edc......it was my grandmother's fragrance and the one I choose for good luck, when I'm extra nostalgic, missing her, etc. I could.not. live without it ;-)

The hard part is that the fragrance you love the most might not be the one you'd choose if you could have only one. Frederic Malle Une Rose is the fragrance I most revere as creation of great beauty. However, I wouldn't want to wear it every day.

The fragrance that comes closest to being "all things" to me is Etro Shaal Nur. I think I could wear that one every day, if it were the only one I owned.
