It's a good few inches longer than I prefer mine, but I think it suits you.

    I've had my hair many lengths and styles over the years and tried a wealth of different products, ranging from your standard supermarket type stuff right up to fairly expensive options. At the moment I'm using something called Hairbond Distorter, it's a fairly light clay and works through the hair giving a matte finish;

It smells really nice for a hair product and doesn't take much to washout or restyle once applied.

I'm really pleased with Shear Revival's Gray Ghost. Perfect for my side part pompadour. Smells fantastic, provides a high hold with a low sheen and is cruelty free. Washes out with water. The jar looks very cool as well:

I'm a fan of Sauvecito. Good hold, water based, and their seasonal and LEs smell great!

I'm a huge pomade lover. My hair care product collection far exceeds my fragrance collection. Right now I'm huge on Ivr Bru, a homebrewer from Scotland who makes a variety of products for the hair and beard (he recently started making soaps as well.) For stateside companies, I pretty much stick with Nostalgic Grooming and Lockhart's Authentic.

I had to stop wearing product because everything I tried would make my hair too oily. Sometimes I use a spray mist too soften my hair but that's about it.

My hair gets oils enough as it is, so I had to stop using creams and pomades, waxes and molds.

My pomades have been causing acne on my scalp lately. And I use very little. I recently switched to water based and I have not seen an improvement yet. I use good brands like Baxter and American Crew.

I wouldn't call American Crew a good brand. I had an impression it's a cheap, grocery store brand

Have you tried any clays yet? Also American Crew are garbage.

Too greasy. Try switching to a wax, paste, or a thick cream.

I appreciate the advice. I am going to look into some light creams and pastes. Any brands I should scout?

For several years I used Aveda styling paste. Worked pretty well for me. Much less greasy than pomade.

The first thing you would want to look at is Water based vs oil based. After that it will probably come down to personal preference as far as finish (matte/gloss) hold strength (strong hold/light hold) and smell.
Also you may consider styling powders. These are kinda new for men but some people quite like them. Dust your hair then work it in. Doesnt leave a dusty/powdery look.

Check out Sumotech by Bumble & Bumble; it's been one of go-to's for awhile now.

What's the verdict? Haven't tried that one personally but I've tried several B&B products and was never disappointed.

Not bad. Good control, but I've decided to just use it after blow drying. When applying it to wet hair and then blow-drying, I got way too much volume. I'm just using it like one would apply a pomade. No real shine, and it gives a light hold.

I use Baxter of California Clay Pomade. Have used it for a number of years, and I love it. Great hold, matte finish.

I moved back to Baxter Soft Water Pomade this morning. I needed a bit more shine and hold.

Some like total matte, I like a tad of natural shine. To each his own.

I get a good amount of shine from a nice conditioner, sometimes the leave in conditioner. The advertised 'shine' with paste/mold/pomade always seems too greasy for me.
But I'm a blonde. The shine aspect probably works better with darker hair.
