Default My best perfume day — 2009

Today the mailman delivered THREE fragrance packages.

    — My current No. 1 frag, in the 100ml bottle: Bigarade Concentree!!!
    — A long-awaited package from Riannon the Wondrous that includes slurpy-good VIP Room!!!
    — MUA swap samples
= Totaling 18 new scents to wear and sniff! (I think I can do No-Repeats November AND December.)

I was ready to declare today my best perfume day 2009, but nothing can rival Worldwide Basenotes Meet-Up Day August 29 with Ubu in Chicago for the sheer pleasure of her company, plus the novelty of leaving BN’s holodeck atmosphere for the real world of 3D perfume and people.

As 2009 winds down, do you have a favorite memory or two from this year, or are you counting on Santa to wind things up with a bang?

I really enjoyed my day of running around NYC smelling the 'fumes all up and down 5th Avenue and Madison Ave.

Santa has non-fragrance gifts for me this year.

    Yay, Quarry!

No one thing stands out for me, but I am blessed to have known so many truly nice, generous, interesting, and intelligent people here on Basenotes over the year. 2009 was the year I first tried Donna Karan Cashmere Mist. And the by Kilian fragrances that I've tried (so far, three of them) excited me. I don't know what Santa has in store for me, and I actually like that (just hope it's not chunks of coal!).

If not counting a big order of fragrance material arriving, my best frag day could be last night. At dance class I correctly identified 5 out of 5 different perfumes on the different ladies I danced with.

    That is impressive, GH!

Quarry, WOW what a day! I'm so happy for you! That Bigarade Concentree sounds mighty intriguing -- the bitter orange peel descriptions make me drool. I imagine it would be good to wear while eating dark chocolate.

My best fragrance day? I honestly can't remember as there have been so many! Some of them (of course) have involved Basenotes -- making discoveries with the rest of you, puzzle-cracking on the Guess the Fragrance by the Picture! and 3x3 Blind Sniff threads, and revelling in the aromas in the room after I've decanted samples to trade.

I'm just going to nominate today for me, too, I think. I wore Sienne l'Hiver for the first time in months. It is a feast for the senses, and it was pure glory on this cold and clear day.

Haunani, you must try the Lindt Intense Orange chocolate bar. Little bits of bitter orange peel embedded in dark chocolate. It's good!

I'm wondering whether my husband will give me a fragrance for Christmas? That would be a good perfume day.

Yeehaw! Some days, the perfume goddesses just come together right, huh?

I agree, the Bigarade Conc sounds super, I'm putting it on the list.

My best day had to have been receiving an intact, unopened, fantastic bottle of vintage Lanvin Scandal-bought on ebay for a song ; )

A day when a package arrives from Chanel is an excellent day! If the bottle inside is one of les exclusifs, it's even better. And It's such a treat to open those pristine boxes within boxes - the extra surprise of the selected samples can put you over the moon! But the packaging is too nice to throw out - those sturdy black and white boxes can find many uses, but what do you do with yards and yards of Chanel embossed white satin ribbon?

Anyway, I had a day like this in August that involved Chanel No22. And if I'm really good I might have one featuring Coromandel for Christmas.

Well, I've had three! Yep, you guessed it:

    tang
    Quarry
    SomervilleMetroMan

Nothing beats meeting up and sniffing together! Seriously, these three I hold close at heart.

Coming in at a close second are the days when the mail carrier filled my mailbox with lovely samples & pre-loved bottles of perfume and assorted gifts from other kind & generous basenoters! Random kindness is prevalent among basenoters - you people are uplifting and inspiring!

I was wondering which ones they were!

    Body Shop's Vanilla - 50s
    SJP's Lovely - 40s
    Coco Mademoiselle - 40s
    Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere 20s - 30s
    Estee Lauder's Intuition - teens

I'm just having fun with the above guesses. I'm sure the correct answers will be interesting!

Ubu, you are so right about that! I have been shown astonishing generosity and kindness by Basenoters. I'm not sure I deserve it, but I try to pass it on in hopes that the practice will ripple outward.

I remember the surprised/confused look that came over Ubu when I told her, in Chicago, that I thought Basenotes had made me a better person. A kind environment does bring out the best in people.

3xasif/ J ...you are making me crave chocolate in the middle of the night ! ( It's night where I am right now - suffering from the usual insomnia! ) Yumz is right !

I think my fave perfume day apart from my Harrods binge ,has to be yesterday...because I have finally decided to take back 'my' perfume Mitsouko after years of leaving it aside . I don't know why I decided to finally let go of the bad memories but I have.

This is my first year of interest in serious fragrances, so there've been lots of firsts. But I think the single thing that made me happiest was one of the earliest, before I started posting a lot, buying full bottles and samples and pure notes from lots of great sources. I saw in someones post that Czech & Speake would send samples free for the asking. I went to their web site and asked. About 10 days later the package arrived in the mail. It really did feel just like Christmas morning! and then Kitty and I had our first week of sampling these unknowns together. I've gotten lots since that I actually like better than any of those first samples, but they were the first. And I didn't even pay for shipping.

I'm going to have to say the day I expierenced Dior Homme. I remember a lot of posts about it and the Basenotes awards it won. It made me become more eager to smell it. Now, Dior Homme is my favorite cologne.

    And the correct answers are

    Body Shop's Vanilla - mid 40s
    SJP's Lovely - early 30s
    Coco Mademoiselle - mid 30s
Chanel No. 5 Eau Premiere - late 30s
    Estee Lauder's Intuition - late 30s

This is an unusual composition of a swing dance class which for some reason attracts the older-than-usual-swing-dance crowd, but the ladies there are some of the best I've danced with. So yes some women do get better with age.

Some wonderful stories, thank's for sharing!

For me it must be my day in Grasse, France. I managed to visit two houses; Fragonard and Galimar. I was disappointed that we didn't have time for Molinard as well, but I've been there before.

I ended up with one full sized bottle from Fragonard and six 15 ml bottles from Galimard. Bliss.

Funnily enough, for a guy, "my Guerlain" is L'instant Magic. Could not stop sniffing my wrist when I tried it the first time at a dept. store. They better not make that limited edition.

Back to other good perfume moments:

    - When I sprayed Chanel's Coco during a lunchtime trip to the dept. store, then I attended an office meeting an hour later, and I kept getting distracted by how beautiful it was. I kept leaning my face on my left wrist just to bring it closer to my nose.

    - Smiling instantly upon smelling Prada IdI and Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT on a smelling strip for the first time. Rare reaction!

It has been a great year, though sadly I couldn't get away for the meet-ups.
    Hightlights:

    1. The month of March, spent in Paris, sniffing and chatting in all the perfume boutiques and at the Osmotheque, riding the metro after being perfumed head to toe by the SAs at Geurlain, walking on a cloud of Bois d'Armenie, Iris ganache, and Chamade ... breathing with my head in those perfume columns at Frederic Malle!

    2. Winning a drawing at Saks that has a different Bond No. 9 delivered to my door every month for year. This month was Fire Island.

    3. The Profumo sample groups fizzled, but were wonderful while they lasted!
