An EdP released by Guerlain as a gift for the end-of-year holidays, 2008; not available commercially. In general terms a seductive, ambery oriental scent. This starts off as a fresh and slightly spicy top note, but the deeper ambery notes are evident fom the beginning. The progression is gradual, and seems linear at first, but later the layers begin to weave in and out, creating a kind of scintillating effect. This has good longevity; the sillage is prominent at the beginning and gradually tapers off as the drydown progresses. At first I thought this wasn't very ground-breaking, but each time I wear it, I gain a new appreciation for its construction and its many facets. Now I can see that it is worthy of Jean-Paul Guerlain.

Have I told you about the scent of jasmine? Have I spoken about the smell of the sea? The earth is scented. And I perfume myself to enhance what I am. That's why I can not wear a perfume that bothers me. Perfuming is an instinctive wisdom. And like all art, it requires some knowledge of yourself..."

For this blustery day I'm in a musk mood.
Tom Ford Musk Pure
Of the four fragrances released by Tom Ford in 2009 as part of his White Musk Collection subset of the Private Blends, Musk Pure has been the one I've has the hardest time coming to terms with. When you see a fragrance called Musk Pure I was initially expecting a deep dirty animalic unadulterated musk. Perhaps Musc Kublai Khan on steroids. That isn't what Musk Pure is, in fact it is 180-degrees the opposite. I should have used my chemists perspective on the word pure to define the idea of Musk Pure. When I purify something I strip away everything but the one piece of it I want to keep and then concentrate that single fraction. That is what Mr. Ford has done with Musk Pure and in doing so has created a clean musk laced with a lot of floral accords.
Thw top of Musk Pure begins with bergamot, ylang ylang, and lily of the valley. At this early point there is no detectable musk to my nose. This really threw me the first couple of times I smelled this on a strip. Much like Clara Peller in the old Wendy's TV ads I kept saying "Where's the Musk?!". That feeling would intensify as the heart is even more floral as a clean, less indolic, jasmine and an icy orris join in. Easily 45 minutes in on my skin and I'm still not getting any musk. The base adds a mix of tonka and benzoin and then, here it comes, musk. This is as sheer a white musk note as I've encountered as it stays soft and approachable and it slowly intensifies until after a couple of hours what is left of Musk Pure is predominantly the clean musk along with the tonka and benzoin.
Musk Pure has slightly above average longevity and modest sillage on me.
My surmise is Mr. Ford was looking to make a clean approachable musk for those for whom the note, in its unadulterated form, is problematic. If that was his goal I think he has achieved it. What I'm still trying to decide is whether I like my musk as pure as Musk Pure makes it.
Have a Wonderful Wednesday everyone.
